Personajes como la madre de Sebastin (Mara Elena Lillo) antigua combatiente del VOP, de la secretaria (Melinda) que es capaz de cualquier cosa con tal de no fallarle a su jefe, o del sub gerente (Claudio Valds Fonk) quien con un clculo cnico y sin frontera aspira al cargo mximo, se armonizan en forma sinfnica con la suegra del protagonista, que es vctima del terrible mal de Alzheimer, y de su esposa, una mujer de clase quien, desde su soledad pasiva, ve transformarse su entorno sin tener recursos ni respuestas para enfrentar el derrumbe del mundo en que creci. La novela transcurre con una velocidad abismante con una serie de otros personajes tan reales como los que construye Biggs los que van relatando una historia lineal y transversal a la vez, desde su personal punto de vista. Woven into this rich tapestry is Carlos mother-in-law, a victim of Alzheimers; his wife, a woman with class who, from her passive loneliness, sees her world fall apart without having means or answers to face the destruction of the world she grew up in. Seamos conscientes de que ya tenemos la habilidad y la perspicacia de reconocer la voz del Buen Pastor como Jesús nos dijo en Juan 10:27, "Las ovejas que son mías, oyen y están escuchando mi voz, y yo las conozco y ellas me siguen." ¿Suena esto como si vamos a oír y seguir a un papa, profeta, sacerdote o cualquier otra persona que quiere entrar a su billetera? Pero más importante, ¿resuena esto en su espíritu, conocimiento y mente? Si no lo es así, esto podría ser la razón por la cual el cuerpo de Cristo es corto en fe y de larga al fracaso y la falla, algunos no lo hacen, sino que rehúsan escuchar la voz del Pastor principal ignorando Romanos 10:17, donde Él nos exhorta: "Así que la fe viene por oír (lo que se cuenta), y lo que es oído viene por la predicación (del mensaje que proceden de los labios) de Cristo (el Mesías mismo)." Es lamentable que la mayoría prefieren ser llevados "como botín o te haces vos mismo cautivo de la llamada de la filosofía o el intelectualismo y falaces y vanas (ociosas fantasías y plena tonterías), siguiendo la tradición humana (las ideas de los hombres de lo material en lugar a la del mundo espiritual), solamente nociones crudas que siguen las enseñanzas rudimentarias y elementales del universo ignorando [las enseñanzas de] Cristo [el Mesías]" (Colosenses 2:08). Una vez más, ¿están estas escrituras diciéndonos que el mensaje de Cristo viene de la boca de un papa católico, un presidente mormón o de un ayatolá? Por supuesto que no, ya que la voz de Dios se escucha sólo a través de su Espíritu Santo, que es el vocero del Jesucristo mismo, punto final de la historia. ¿Por qué no puede el cuerpo de Cristo, discernir que su único deseo es hacernos crecer, captar Su visión y poner en práctica su método e instrucción de estudiar Su Palabra? Y en llegar ahí en fe, ponerla en acción para activar su poder en cada momento de nuestra vida, hasta el día que Él regrese.

His works have been translated into all major languages of the world, and many of his most highly regarded novels, those of the contemporary period, have been translated into English two, three and even four times over. Of the few “contemporary novels” of Galdós that until now have not come to light in English, The Forbidden is certainly among the most noteworthy. The story line concerns a wealthy philanderer, José María Bueno de Guzmán, who attempts to buy the favors of his three beautiful married cousins. He is successful with the first, Eloísa, a grasping materialist who falls deeply in love with him. Then he rejects her in order to attempt to seduce the youngest, Camila. Meanwhile, the third, the pseudo-intellectual María Juana, jealous, seduces José María. But it is Camila, healthy, impetuous and wild, who resists his temptations and holds our attention. The novelist and critic Leopoldo Alas, Galdós’s contemporary, calls her “the most feminine, graceful, lively female character that any modern novelist has painted.” As a naturalistic study, in the manner of Balzac in particular, principal characters of Galdós’s other novels (El doctor Centeno, La de Bringas, La familia de León Roch) become fleetingly visible in The Forbidden. In addition, the entire Bueno de Guzmán family gives evidence of the naturalistic emphasis on heredity: they all display certain physical or mental disorders. Eloísa has a morbid fear of feathers, María Juana often feels that she has a tiny piece of cloth caught in her teeth, José María suffers bouts of depression, an uncle is a kleptomaniac, one of the relatives writes letters to himself, etc. At the same time, this novel shows the foibles of Spanish society where status is determined by one’s associates, by the wearing of finery, and by living on borrowed money. In their history of Spanish literature, Chandler and Schwartz call Galdós “the greatest novelist of the nineteenth century and the only one who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with great novelists like Balzac, Dickens and Dostoievsky.” The Forbidden, written at the height of the author’s creative powers, is a major work and its publication for an English-speaking audience is long overdue.
