Esta concepción providencial de lo ocurrido, según la cual Dios quiso que España conquistara el Nuevo Mundo para la expansión y triunfo final del cristianismo,4 lejos de ser una idea extravagante para su tiempo, fue ampliamente compartida por los cronistas y cosmógrafos de la Corona española del siglo xvi.5 El año de 1492, tal y como entonces lo entendieron los ibéricos, partió la historia del mundo en dos; cinco siglos después seguimos tratando de entender qué pasó y el mundo no se termina de ajustar a los cambios que se iniciaron en el Atlántico. El mismo López de Gómara afirma en la ya citada presentación de su obra: "toda historia, aunque no sea bien escrita, deleita";6 una afirmación cuestionable, pero conveniente para conservar el ánimo en la pretensión de escribir sobre la increíble historia del Renacimiento europeo. Aquí va un intento más, esta vez en referencia a personajes y regiones poco visibles en la historiografía de la ciencia moderna: los católicos ibéricos en el mundo atlántico.
