Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Daniel A. Olivas is a rising voice in Chicano fiction whose talents are showcased in this collection of eighteen remarkable short stories set in Southern California. He populates the urban landscapes of his stories with characters that mirror the complex and multifaceted nature of class, gender, and ethnicity in modern Latino communities. Shifting effortlessly between pathos and wry comedy, Olivas is able through his character-driven stories to explore how a married couple deals with miscarriage, how a young lawyer explains her lesbian sexuality to her traditional parents, and how the staff and students of a Catholic school experience the suicide of a popular young priest amidst swirling rumors of his sexual improprieties. Olivas writes in a variety of styles, and the colorful characters and unusual situations addressed in ASSUMPTION AND OTHER STORIES reflect a community that defies easy categorizations and stereotypes.
Book Synopsis Chicano While Mormon by : Ignacio M. García
Download or read book Chicano While Mormon written by Ignacio M. García and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a memoir of the early years of a well-known Chicano scholar whose work and activism were motivated by his Mormon faith. The narrative follows him as an immigrant boy in San Antonio, Texas, who finds religion, goes to segregated schools, participates in the first major school boycott of the modern era in Texas, goes to Viet Nam where he heads an emergency room in the Mekong Delta, and then to college where he becomes involved in the Chicano Movement. Throughout this time he juggles, struggles, and comes to terms with the religious principles that provide him the foundation for his civil rights activism and form the core of his moral compass and spiritual beliefs. In the process he pushes back against those religious traditions and customs that he sees as contrary to the most profound aspects of being a Mormon Christian. This memoir is about activism and religion on the ground and reflects the militancy of people of color whose faith drives them to engage in social action that defies simple political terminology.

Book Synopsis George I. Sánchez by : Carlos Kevin Blanton
Download or read book George I. Sánchez written by Carlos Kevin Blanton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George I. Sánchez was a reformer, activist, and intellectual, and one of the most influential members of the "Mexican American Generation" (1930–1960). A professor of education at the University of Texas from the beginning of World War II until the early 1970s, Sánchez was an outspoken proponent of integration and assimilation. He spent his life combating racial prejudice while working with such organizations as the ACLU and LULAC in the fight to improve educational and political opportunities for Mexican Americans. Yet his fervor was not always appreciated by those for whom he advocated, and some of his more unpopular stands made him a polarizing figure within the Latino community. Carlos Blanton has published the first biography of this complex man of notable contradictions. The author honors Sánchez’s efforts, hitherto mostly unrecognized, in the struggle for equal opportunity, while not shying away from his subject’s personal faults and foibles. The result is a long-overdue portrait of a towering figure in mid-twentieth-century America and the all-important cause to which he dedicated his life: Mexican American integration.

Download or read book Sgt. Reckless written by Robin Hutton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller! She wasn't a horse—she was a Marine. She might not have been much to look at—a small "Mongolian mare," they called her—but she came from racing stock, and had the blood of a champion. Much more than that, Reckless became a war hero—in fact, she became a combat Marine, earning staff sergeant's stripes before her retirement to Camp Pendleton. This once famous horse, recognized as late as 1997 by Life Magazine as one of America's greatest heroes—the greatest war horse in American history, in fact—has unfortunately now been largely forgotten. But author Robin Hutton is set to change all that. Not only has she been the force behind recognizing Reckless with a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and at Camp Pendleton, but she has now recorded the full story of this four-legged war hero who hauled ammunition to embattled Marines and inspired them with her relentless, and reckless, courage.
