Ha sido, históricamente, uno de los símbolos de la sociabilidad porteña, una de las tarjetas postales ofrecidas al turismo, uno de los escenarios de consumo masivo más tradicionales. Se puede, entonces a través de su estudio, acercarse a ver tanto los usos del espacio público, como las manifestaciones del poder estatal y económico en dicho espacio; la calle puede ser mirada tanto como espacio de socialización y consumo; como espacio de representación de determinadas ideologías y mitologías de la vida urbana porteña. Su carácter peatonal permite observar comportamientos en una calle pensada poco para la movilidad urbana (cuyo gran protagonista moderno son los vehículos a motor) y sí mucho más para el consumo y la sociabilidad.
