Book excerpt: The Demonologia Biblica: compiled and edited by Dean M Drinkel. The first in a collection of anthologies to be published by Western Legends throughout 2013 under the banner “Tres Librorum Prohibitorum”.A lexicon of demons full-to-bursting with great writers (some new, some award nominated, some award winning) from all around the world. But the Demonologia is something more. Much more in fact than the sum of its parts. A French nobleman from the 15th Century. Gilles de Montmorency-Laval, Baron de Rais, who was a serial killer and heavily into the occult. At his trial in 1438, it was said that de Rais had sought out individuals who were purported to summon demons. These summoning words were put into a Grimoire fashioned from human skin and which was commonly known as the Demonologia Biblica. A book which mysteriously vanished after de Rais' execution but which is often talked about in 'Dark Circles'. Imagine the power one could wield with such a weapon! Though who knows – maybe it never existed in the first place and was just a figment of someone's warped imagination...I guess we may never know......so until that book is found, turn the page and immerse yourself in the unique demonic worlds these twenty-six authors have created for you......get thee behind me, demon...Authors include:Barbie Wilde, William Meikle, Jan Edwards, John Palisano, Tracie McBride, D.T. This book deals with dramatic characters who act as physiognomists or palm readers in the fictional world and analyses the fictionalisation of physiognomic lore as a practice of divination in early modern Romance theatre from Pietro Aretino and Giordano Bruno to Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca and Thomas Corneille.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the conquest of Mexico, colonial authorities attempted to enforce Christian beliefs among indigenous peoples—a project they envisioned as spiritual warfare. The Invisible War assesses this immense but dislocated project by examining all known efforts in Central Mexico to obliterate native devotions of Mesoamerican origin between the 1530s and the late eighteenth century. The author's innovative interpretation of these efforts is punctuated by three events: the creation of an Inquisition tribunal in Mexico in 1571; the native rebellion of Tehuantepec in 1660; and the emergence of eerily modern strategies for isolating idolaters, teaching Spanish to natives, and obtaining medical proof of sorcery from the 1720s onwards. Rather than depicting native devotions solely from the viewpoint of their colonial codifiers, this book rescues indigenous perspectives on their own beliefs. This is achieved by an analysis of previously unknown or rare ritual texts that circulated in secrecy in Nahua and Zapotec communities through an astute appropriation of European literacy. Tavárez contends that native responses gave rise to a colonial archipelago of faith in which local cosmologies merged insights from Mesoamerican and European beliefs. In the end, idolatry eradication inspired distinct reactions: while Nahua responses focused on epistemological dissent against Christianity, Zapotec strategies privileged confrontations in defense of native cosmologies.

Book excerpt: WIKIPEDIA says: 'H.P. Lovecraft's reputation has grown tremendously over the decades, and he is now commonly regarded as one of the most important horror writers of the 20th century, exerting an influence that is widespread, though often indirect.' His tales of the tentacled Elder God Cthulhu and his pantheon of alien deities were initially written for the pulp magazines of the 1920s and '30s. These astonishing tales blend elements of horror, science fiction and cosmic terror that are as powerful today as they were when they were first published. THE NECRONOMICON collects together the very best of Lovecraft's tales of terror, including the complete Cthulhu Mythos cycle, just the way they were originally published. It will introduce a whole new generation of readers to Lovecraft's fiction, as well as being a must-buy for those fans who want all his work in a single, definitive volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Spanish arrived in Peru in 1532, men of the Inca Umpire worshipped the Sun as Father and their dead kings as ancestor heroes, while women venerated the Moon and her daughters, the Inca queens, as founders of female dynasties. In the pre-Inca period such notions of parallel descent were expressions of complementarity between men and women. Examining the interplay between gender ideologies and political hierarchy, Irene Silverblatt shows how Inca rulers used their Sun and Moon traditions as methods of controlling women and the Andean peoples the Incas conquered. She then explores the process by which the Spaniards employed European male and female imageries to establish their own rule in Peru and to make new inroads on the power of native women, particularly poor peasant women. Harassed economically and abused sexually, Andean women fought back, earning in the process the Spaniards' condemnation as "witches." Fresh from the European witch hunts that damned women for susceptibility to heresy and diabolic influence, Spanish clerics were predisposed to charge politically disruptive poor women with witchcraft. Silverblatt shows that these very accusations provided women with an ideology of rebellion and a method for defending their culture.

Book excerpt: My thesis demonstrates how Nahua women were active as represented in the archive and their agency reflects the authority of Nahua women as they appeared in the archive, a matter that traditional narratives of sixteenth-century Mexico have overlooked. My analysis includes an interdisciplinary approach in my study of various primary sources that range from the textual accounts Hernan Cortes, Diego Duran, Bernardino de Sahagun and indigenous accounts. I incorporate recent anthropological and archaeological studies that offer rich lenses on the indigenous past in ways that the discipline of History is unable to access. Such interdisciplinary methods help fill in the gaps in interpreting the archive - which are comprised of textual and visual sources -- about Nahua peoples in sixteenth-century Mexico. I argue that women's actions are present in the traditional repositories of so-called primary sources on which scholars studying the past rely -- archives, libraries, and research institutions. Despite their presence, their specific influence and power have not been explored and incorporated into the overall narrative of indigenous perspectives, which I find still emphasizes male agency. I urge historians and scholars to recapture the missing stories of marginalized populations during encounters that have been shaped by the voices of powerful elites that represent both sides of the narrative. This project dares to imagine what the indigenous woman of the sixteenth century saw, experienced, and sought to bring about in textual and visual records, many created in the context of the Spanish invasion of Mexico. Recovering the lives of Nahua women will inspire and empower all of indigenous women today.

Book excerpt: The cult of the dead, centered on Todos Santos, the All Saints Day-All Souls Day celebration, is one of the most important aspects of Mesoamerican Indian and mestizo religion. Focusing on rural Tlaxcala, in Mexico, Hugo Nutini presents a thorough description and analysis of the cult in its syncretic, structural, and expressive dimensions and describes its development from the original confrontation of pre-Hispanic polytheism and Spanish Catholicism, through colonial times, until the disintegration of the system of folk religions that is even now occurring. The discussion of the expressive component of the cult of the dead is a crucial contribution of the study. Professor Nutini shows that symbolism can be an adjunct to expressive studies, but not an end in itself. In addition, he postulates a theory that may serve as a model for studies of the combination and reconciliation of religious beliefs in other contexts. Emphasizing folk theology, teleology, and eschatology, rather than the mechanical and administrative components more frequently studied in works on Mesoamerican Indian and mestizo religions, he concludes that the local system is monolatrous, rather than monotheistic.
