Esta hipótesis supone que un incremento del comercio intraindustrial en un país producirá menores costes de ajuste que un incremento del comercio interindustrial. Para estudiar el CIIM en España y poder contrastar la HAS, es necesario realizar análisis previos sobre el CII en nuestro país. Así, en el capítulo primero, se ofrece como introducción una descripción de cómo ha evolucionado el sector exterior español en el periodo 1988-1999. En el capítulo segundo, el objetivo es medir el comercio intraindustrial, buscando primero su valor total, y posteriormente midiendo los distintos tipos en los que se puede subdividir: horizontal, vertical de alta calidad y vertical de baja calidad. También se realizará un análisis estadístico del tipo "shift-share" para determinar cuáles han sido las causas de ese cambio. En el capítulo tercero se realizará un estudio estadístico con variables "dummies" que determine qué factores tienen más importancia para explicar la variabilidad de los datos del CII cuando se contempla datos desagregados por países, sectores y años. La cuestión que se aborda en el capítulo cuatro es si el comercio que se ha creado en la economía española es iuntra o inter-industrial, interrogante importante por su relación con los costes de ajuste y la Hipótesis del Ajuste Suave (HAS) que se trata en el siguiente capítulo. En el capítulo cinco, se analizará siguiendo a Brülhart (1999) la HAS, es decir, se estudiará si el comercio intra-industrial marginal, genera en la economía menores costes de ajuste que el comercio iunterindustrial. Mediante una revisión de la metodología utilizada en la literatura se analizará esta hipótesis y su relación con el CIIM, con el fin de determinar un modelo que permita contrastar dicha hipótesis en España. En el capítulo seis se recogen los principales resultados y conclusiones de esta tesis, y, por último, en el capítulo siete se presenta la bibliografía utilizada.
