Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A World of Words offers a new look at the degree to which language itself is a topic of Poe's texts. Stressing the ways his fiction reflects on the nature of its own signifying practices, Williams sheds new light on such issues as Poe's characterization of the relationship between author and reader as a struggle for authority, on his awareness of the displacement of an "authorial writing self" by a "self as it is written," and on his debunking of the redemptive properties of the romantic symbol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Amerikanistik/Anglistik), course: Paradigms of American Literature: E.A. Poe, language: English, abstract: In this paper, I will examine the numerous symbols of transience Poe uses in "The Masque of the Red Death" and analyze what they represent and how they contribute or influence the plot of the story. Therefore, I will refer to the work of various literary and social scientists and critics such as Jeffrey Meyers and Sabrina Laurent, but also other scholars from different fields. In addition, I will depict that the events within the short story are intended to give an insight into the negative behavior of humans in order to serve as an example of what morally reprehensible behavior can result in. Nowadays it is common knowledge that Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous representatives when it comes to the involvement of personal experiences and the placement of hidden symbols in short stories and poems. The Masque of the Red Death is no exception and also represents one of Poe's most popular tales. It first appeared in Graham's Magazine in May 1842 and, due to the time it was written, was part of the so-called "Masquerades" along with three other of Poe's stories. The short story contains a decent amount of symbolism and has therefore often been interpreted differently by many literary scholars over the past years. It was investigated where the origins of the story may lie, which parallels can be drawn to the real world, what basically inspired the story and what morals can be derived from it. But many attempts have also been made to identify the true nature of the disease of the same name. Therefore, the variety of publications on this work is very broad and thus offers different answers and analysis approaches. Still, it is certain that the short story follows many traditions of Gothic fiction and is often analyzed as an allegory about the inevitability of death.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen, language: English, abstract: Poe’s short stories and their impact on the cinema today attract me. Because of that and because of the rising importance of film studies I decided to choose a current film adaptation of Poe’s tales for my work; the mystery-thriller “The Raven” with John Cusack. Three main aspects of Poe’s short stories are the theme of detection, the theme of insanity and the mood with which he builds up a dreamy semi-reality. So I want to prove the hypothesis that those central elements of Poe’s short stories are still up to date and have a great influence on movies like The Raven. Therefore I will not only use the primary sources of Poe’s short stories and the film The Raven, I will also take into consideration major works by, for instance, G. R. Thompson and Benjamin F. Fisher.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Paderborn (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Proseminar American Gothic, language: English, abstract: "And much of Madness and more of Sin And Horror the Soul to the Plot." This line taken from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem ‘The Conquerer Worm’ perfectly describes the essential elements featured in many of Poe’s poems and stories, on which I am about to write in particular. Madness and horror, sins and the ‘Imp of the Perverse’ - The Evil, which lies within all of us - are popular and frequently recurring motives in Poe’s literary works and thereby create a mood and atmosphere quite dark and nightmarish. The reader is offered a deep glance into the abyss of the human mind and psyche. In this term paper I’m going to draw a comparison between two of Poe’s short stories, which both deal with the above mentioned concepts and images and therefore, are counted to the Gothic Genre - ‘The Black Cat’ and ‘The Tell-Tale Heart.’ The main focus of my work will lie on the similarities of the storytelling structures and the speech Poe uses to convey this certain feeling of suspense, horror and thrill. I will examine which further motives and images Poe uses in this two stories and which function they fulfil. I’m going to carry out my researches primarily with the help of the books: ‘Poe’ by Walter Lenning, ‘Poe – A Biography’ by Frank T. Zumbach, ‘The Cambridge Companion to Gothic Fiction’ by Jerrod Hogle and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Writings’ by Edgar Allan Poe.

This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen (Englisches Seminar), course: Proseminar I: Introduction to Literary Studies, language: English, abstract: Edgar Allan Poe published his short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" in 1843 when there was an ongoing discussion about the insanity defence in the United States. The notion of "moral insanity" or "partial insanity" was proposed, being a type of insanity that twists a person’s moral faculties only, not their intellect. This new legal definition of insanity made it possible to exculpate those who had committed a crime in a rationally planned way but were unable to comprehend its moral depravity. In this paper, the terms "insanity" and "madness" are used with respect to the protagonist of "The Tell-Tale Heart" and are presupposed to refer to the idea of moral or partial insanity. The quintessence of the arguments put forward is that the reader’s belief in the protagonist’s insanity is created by unreliable and subjective narration. To begin with, the narrative situation of the story is analysed by applying different established categories of narratology and by identifying the narrator as unreliable. Then, the narrator’s unreliability is interpreted with regard to his intention of wanting to appear sane, his subjectivity caused by that intention, and his unconsciously conveyed insanity.
