Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Oxford Handbook of Jorge Luis Borges consists of thirty-five chapters, organized into four main categories: Borges's life, his representative work traced across the many decades of his writing, his work in collaboration, and his reception in literature and other disciplines. The volume highlights current debates among Borges scholars as a way to reevaluate how the physical forms and sociopolitical contexts of Borges's writings both shaped and determined specific readerships around the world. Alongside these novel approaches to Borges's fictions and nonfictions, this Handbook is the first of its kind to dedicate space to the reception of Borges's works in the fields of philosophy, the visual arts, film, political science, media theory, mathematics, and law. The collection also goes further to trace Borges's activity in the public sphere, including local and national politics and the functioning of cultural institutions. To date, no other collection devoted to his writings or life addresses these issues in depth, nor do they consider how his affiliations and interests change over the course of his long life. Incorporating these broader perspectives into this Handbook serves to bring out tensions, continuities, and discontinuities in Borges's work, allowing for a much more nuanced understanding of it. Jorge Luis Borges, literary studies, literary history, reception, Argentine literature, Latin American literature"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the notion of 'diglossia' occupies a prominent place in sociolinguistic research. Since the 1960s, when the dominant sense of 'diglossia' was the complementary sociofunctional distribution of two varieties of the same language, the term has been applied — often controversially — to a growing number of diverse sociolinguistic situations. As a consequence of this extension of the scope of the concept, in combination with an increasing interest in the relationship between the role of language and the social structure, the number of publications in this field has risen exponentially over the last decades. However, despite the growing importance of the notion, up till now there was no adequate bibliography devoted to diglossia, while coverage in other bibliographies does not do justice to the number of works actually published in this area. This first comprehensive bibliography of the subject includes almost 3,000 entries; although the time span covered is 1960-1990, the book includes several dozens of entries from before 1960 and also a substantial number of very recent publications from the period 1990-1992. The selection of items has not been restricted to a specific definition of diglossia: all available publications in which the term (or one of its offsprings) appears have been included; moreover, when considered appropriate, some material relevant to the subject has been added even though the term is not explicitly used. The usefulness of the bibliography has been enhanced significantly by six indexes: (1) index of languages, (2) diglossia in literature, (3) historically oriented works, (4) pedagogically oriented works, (5) theoretical works, and (6) theses and dissertations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that children's learning is influenced by economic, political, ecological, cultural and other influences is being focused upon by educators world-wide. The editors of this volume point out that there is a huge amount of scientific knowledge from different disciplines that could be a basis for the necessary changes in teaching and learning both in and out of school, on different educational levels and under different institutional conditions. The editors define learning activity as a special kind of activity directed towards the acquisition of societal knowledge and skills through their individual reproduction by means of special learning actions upon learning objects. Learners can acquire skill and knowledge, they add, only by actively acting with the material according to its substance and structure, and through the co-ordination, communication and co-operation between learners and other people since that is one of the most essential features of learning activity. The book explores how learning proceeds. "Societal forms of thinking and knowledge" considers the interdependency between the societal traditions of production, science, art an public life and personal thinking modes and knowledge. "Teaching, learning activity in theory and practice" explores the relation between content of knowledge, teaching and learning activity. "Social interaction, development of motives and self-evaluation" examines the core aspects of learning activity. "Play, spontaneous learning and teaching" looks into the transition from pre-school to school and the transformation of activities as preconditions for children's learning activity.
