Although they were still recognized as a "licita religio" (their legal existence guaranteed by the laws of the Empire), the Church gained influence on the legislation dealing with Jews. Access of Jews to public posts was prohibited, as well as possessing Christian slaves, testifying in trials or becoming lawyers. The Church isolated the Jews socially, prohibiting Christians from having any contact with them (marrying, sharing a meal, holding conversations, exchanging greetings, etc.). Through literature, sermons, and canonical law, the Church created and spread a degrading image of the Jew and of Judaism. For the Church, the existence of Judaism was justified only as "testes veritatis"--To prove the veracity of the Old Testament and the veracity of the promises contained in it which were fulfilled by Christianity, now the "Verus Israel".
