Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia, 1774. A decade after the colonization of the Lower Volga, the German villages endure the siege of the barbarians that lurk in the region, as well as the threat of the armies led by Yemelian Pugachev, the rebel Cossack who intends to dethrone the empress Catherine II. In this turbulent setting, the village of Mariental is attacked by a group of Kyrgyz nomads, who kidnap, among other colonists, the young Katharina. Her brother Georg sets forth on her rescue along with a militia formed by inhabitants from different colonies. Meanwhile, Andrew, her other brother, joins Pugachev's rebellion and takes part in the destructive campaign against the tsarist government. This is the story of people who had been persecuted and a family who had been driven apart, a story of struggles, yearnings, of loves, and hopes. To develop in a historical novel, the vicissitudes of a noble and selfless people, who inhabited the Russian steppe for more than a century, honors, with incomparable respect, those beloved ancestors. A true and sincere pleasure for the Wolgadeutsche Argentinian Cultural Center to sponsor such a beautiful work of rescue, preservation, and dissemination of our German Volga culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for many years as Barron's Easy Way Series, the new editions of these popular self-teaching titles are now Barron's E-Z Series. Brand-new cover designs reflect all new page layouts, which feature extensive two-color treatment, a fresh, modern typeface, and more graphic material than ever-- charts, graphs, diagrams, instructive line illustrations, and where appropriate, amusing cartoons. Meanwhile, the quality of the books' contents remains at least as high as ever. Barron's E-Z books are self-help manuals focused to improve students' grades in a wide variety of academic and practical subjects. For most subjects, the level of difficulty ranges between high school and college-101 standards. Although primarily designed as self-teaching manuals, these books are also preferred by many teachers as classroom supplements--and for some courses, as main textbooks. E-Z books review their subjects in detail, and feature both short quizzes and longer tests with answers to help students gauge their learning progress. Subject heads and key phrases are set in a second color as an easy reference aid. Barron's heavily revised and updated E-Z Spanish presents a beginner's introduction to speaking, understanding, and writing in Spanish, with emphasis on oral proficiency. All stories and exercises have been modernized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Great Chiasmus, Paul R. Olson explores the use of the chiasmus in the work of Miguel de Unamuno. The chiasmus, a reversal in the order of words or parts of speech in parallel phrases, appears on a variety of levels, from brief microstructures (blanca como la nieve y como la nieve fria), to the narrative structures of entire novel. Olson even suggests the chiasmus encompasses the stages in Unamuno's novelistic work, forming a chiasmus that can be schematized as ABC: CBA. As a phenomenon of enclosure, the chiasmus is related to other enclosing phenomena such as the image of Chinese boxes and the mise en abyme. These structures, three-dimensional version of the chiasmus, are also frequent in Unamuno's texts. The chiasmus is also found on the conceptual level, in which Unamuno regards apparent contraries as freely reversible and thus identical. From early adulthood he was fascinated by the Hegelian idea of the identity of pure Being and pure Nothingness, and that concept provides the structure underlying a wide variety of his paradoxes and verbal conceits. In this connection, Unamuno explores concepts usually considered opposites, such as mind and body or spirit and matter. Olson's close readings of the texts in terms of this structure lead to observations on Spanish history, events in Unamuno's life, the psychological dimensions of his characters, and the authorial self that is found within his texts.

Book excerpt: In the field of higher education research, one of the most fascinating observations is the consistent and permanent expansion of higher education systems worldwide since the end of the Second World War. Undoubtedly, the predominant approach to address these developments has been through quantitative analysis, as well as international comparisons. The following work examines the particularities of the Venezuelan context with the aim of identifying specific features of this worldwide phenomenon in this South American case. Through a combination of qualitative methods, the author proposes a biographical approach for the study of higher education inclusion processes, which takes into account the perspectives and experiences of those who have been targeted by an ambitious higher education expansion process. The most distinctive feature of this work would be its methodological contribution to the field of higher education research. One could also argue that the ethnographic account of the Bolivarian Missions of education in Chavez’s Venezuela is both original and unprecedented. Furthermore, the writing approach bridges the interests of both academics, practitioners of the field and members of the general public.

Book excerpt: Filmspanism explores the geopolitics of knowledge involved in academic approaches to Spanish cinema. This companion rethinks the role of disciplinarity, institutionality, and nationality in the study of film by taking into account a rather specific set of contentious issues, intellectual traditions, discursive servitudes, and invested scholarship. To that end, the book explores the topics of art cinema, popular culture, film genre, and transnationalism, always with Spanish cinema as its concrete object of study. An insightful contribution to the study of Spanish cinema, this discussion will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in Hispanic Studies and Film Studies.

Book excerpt: Organized into author, source, and title indexes, this volume contains lists of plays by Galician, Catalan, and Basque writers, as well as those writing in Castilian Spanish. Many of these plays date from early in the century because there were a number of Spanish weeklies that published dramatic pieces at that time. Harvell, a professor at the Copley Library, U. of San Diego, also includes translations into English, where they exist. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
