Book excerpt: Dynamic New Teaching from Bestselling Author Ed Silvoso The word church has many connotations; we think of it as a specific building, as a group of people, even as a long service to sit through. We hardly ever think of it as world-changing--and neither does society. Yet this is exactly what the first-century ekklesia was. In these vital, eye-opening pages, bestselling author Ed Silvoso takes you back to the first days of the church. Digging into Scripture, he shows how the New Testament church--devoid of buildings, professional clergy, and religious freedom--was able to transform the hostile, pagan places into which it was born and set in motion a process that changed the world forever. Even more, Silvoso offers a roadmap back to becoming the ekklesia Jesus called his church to be. In the midst of the social, economic, political, and moral chaos in our world today, we possess the hope that people and nations so desperately need--and we can become the revolutionary, transformational, life-giving voice Jesus called us to be. A new, in-depth curriculum kit--which features a DVD with 12 brand-new teaching sessions, a group guide for both leaders and participants, and a copy of the book--is also available. Expounding on the book's dynamic teachings, each kit contains everything you need to equip your group to transform the world around them.

Book excerpt: JESUS PROMISED TO BUILD SOMETHING. DO WE EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS? Fill in the blank: "Upon this rock I will build My ________?" For generations, we have been taught that Jesus promised to build His "church" in Matthew 16:18, so we've dutifully tried to build the church with Him. But there's a big problem: that's not the word He used. Instead, He announced something far more potent: "I will build My ekklesia!" Have you ever wondered why the established church culture so often seems stuck in neutral? If Jesus gave His disciples authority and keys to bind and loose, why are so many churches either apathetic or chronically weak in prayer? The reason is because a motherlode of identity and mission separates those two words. In Ekklesia Rising, you'll learn: The DNA of ekklesia: how revelation produces dominion The "keys" Christ gives, and how to receive and use them Divine design: masculine authority with bridal love The role of the Divine Council in heaven and on earth The inner constitution of contending, covenantal communities Make no mistake, Jesus will build His ekklesia. His Father's house will be a "House of Prayer for All Nations." For hundreds of years, we have been the church. Finally, let us become His ruling ekklesia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Origin and Meaning of Ekklēsia in the Early Jesus Movement, Ralph J. Korner explores the ideological implications of Christ-follower associations self-designating collectively as ekklēsiai. Politically, Korner’s inscriptional research suggests that an association named ekklēsia would have been perceived as a positive, rather than as a counter-imperial, participant within Imperial Greek cities. Socio-religiously, Korner argues that there was no universal ekklēsia to which all first generation Christ-followers belonged; ekklēsia was a permanent group designation used by Paul’s associations. Ethno-religiously, Korner contends that ekklēsia usage by intra muros groups within pluriform Second Temple Judaism problematizes suggestions, not least at the institutional level, that Paul was “parting ways” with Judaism(s), ‘Jewishness’, or Jewish organizational forms.

Book excerpt: Today there is a lot of emphasis on building within Christianity. We speak of building the kingdom and building the church, neither of which are our responsibility. The Father has given us the kingdom and Christ said He would build the church. In the New Testament, the word translated as church is Ekklesia. In the days of Jesus, Ekklesia was not used to define a religious gathering for expressing worship and learning about a deity. The Ekklesia was a governing body in a region that assembled for the purpose of legislating the region, initiating laws and declaring war. It was an assembly of diverse citizenry, who collaborated for the good of the region. When Jesus said, "I will build my Ekklesia," He had something different in mind than what we call the church today. Join us in this book as we seek to find the definition of God's intention and allow the real church to stand up.

Young-Ho Park finds the answer in its strong civic connotation in the politico-cultural world of the Greek East under the Roman Empire. By addressing his local Gentile congregation as ekklesia in his letters, Paul effectively created a symbolic universe in which the Christ-worshippers saw themselves as the honorable citizens who represented the city before God. One lost and forgotten biblical word, "ekklesia," holds the key to a more vibrant and life-changing Christianity. --Modern English language Bibles quote Jesus as saying, "I will build My church." However, the earliest Bibles have Jesus saying, "I will build my ekklesia." For hundreds of years, this Bible word-switch has misdirected the way the body of Christ meets for worship. --So what does ekklesia mean? Ekklesia was the name of the city council in ancient Greek city-states. It was a democratic, interactive, participatory body of equal citizens sharing their concerns and needs with one another. --In the Western world, traditional church is in decline. Religious categories now include millions who are "Dones" (done with church) and "Nones" (have no church affiliation). --Perhaps it is time for more than church. Steve Simms invites you to go "beyond church" and experience ekklesia, HEAVEN's CITY COUNCIL, not as a theological concept, but as a practical and living reality.

Book excerpt: Church - the central identifying word that encompasses the entire religious spectrum. It is the buildings we go to, the sectarian ideology we adhere to, the core of our spiritual identity. Church - the Body of Christ, the Bride of Christ, the called-out ones. Church - Evangelical, Pentecostal, Catholic, and Non-Denominational. Church - the guardian of doctrine, the ark for lost souls, the social bastion for the righteous. We have embraced and perpetuated a culture around this single word - church; a word that should have never existed. In this this book, Tim Kurtz challenges the use of the 'word' church found in most bibles by suggesting it is a willful mistranslation of the original Greek word ekklesia. This book does not 'beat up' the church world, but rather explores how powerful believers would be if they embraced their true identity as the ekklesia - the ruling council of God.

Book excerpt: About The Ekklesia Project The Ekklesia Project is a network of Christians from across the Christian tradition who rejoice in a peculiar kind of friendship rooted in our common love of God and the Church. We come together from Catholic parishes, Protestant congregations, communities in the Anabaptist tradition, house-churches and more as those who are convinced that to call ourselves 'Christian' means that following Jesus Christ must shape all areas of life. Seeing Christ's Body as our "first family," the Ekklesia Project aims to put discipleship and the Church as an alternative community of practices, worship, and integration at the center of contemporary debates on Christianity and society. For more information about The Ekklesia Project, see its website: www.ekklesiaproject.org About the Congregational Formation Initiative The overarching goal of The Ekklesia Project's Congregational Formation Initiative (CFI) is to develop creative and effective ways of supporting congregations that are committed to making lifelong formation and discipleship central to their life together. To support this goal, the CFI fosters collaboration among pastors, scholars and lay persons to develop, refine and disseminate resources and processes that will help initiate and sustain congregational conversations about the fundamental identity and mission of the church. For more information about CFI, including the place of this study in the overall initiative, see the EP website listed above.

Book excerpt: Bible & Treaty: Missionaries among the Māori is a complex and colourful adventure of faith, bravery, perseverance and betrayal that seeks to recover lost connections in the story of modern New Zealand. It brings a fresh perspective to the missionary story, from the lead-up to Samuel Marsden's first sermon on New Zealand soil, and the intervening struggle for survival and understanding, to the dramatic events that unfolded around the Treaty of Waitangi and the disillusionment that led to the Land Wars in the 1860s. While some missionaries clearly failed to live up to their high calling, the majority committed their lives to Māori and were instrumental in spreading Christianity, brokering peace between warring tribes, and promoting literacy – resulting in a Māori-language edition of the Bible. This highly readable account, from the author of Ratana Revisited: An Unfinished Legacy (2006) and Ratana: The Prophet (2009), shines a new light on the ever-evolving business of New Zealand's early history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **** PREFACE **** BY THE AUTHOR HARRY KINDER The title ONE TRUE CHURCH "Ekklesia of Christ," sets forth its content in a detail study of the scriptures and ties them all together to prove in actuality there is only One True Church, which belongs to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The study of scriptures is sometimes simple to understand, and to many, may be difficult. Therefore, we begin with simplicity and gradually the underlying reasoning may be, slightly more or less comprehensive to some readers. We begin with a "fable" of an extremely ignorant man's knowledge of religious matters and interweave "scripture truth" along with his cause and source of distress, by answering his questions by use of the scriptures. However, by meeting an elderly preacher man, finely thru perseverance, his problem is solved. The reader will find the Holy Bible to be Authentic and not just another book. The information written is to prove the Authenticity of the Holy Bible. The writing will make any sensible person come to the realization that it is the Inspired Word of God. The mathematical laws of compound probabilities should astound him. All one has to do is read with an open mind to come to that realization of probabilities. This chapter is written for those that believe some of the scriptures. Then there are those who do not believe one word. (These are the Atheist). However, we have assumed those that read this book is a Believer of the Holy Bible, from cover to cover. This chapter of authenticity will fortify what is believed by many with some interesting concepts to speak for the inspiration of God's Holy Word when faced with that challenge. Next, we will ask ourselves the question; what is it with all these churches, which have different names, doctrines and teachings? When we use the word churches, it actually means to the writer, Christian Faith Based Assemblies. Knowing all the time, there is only "One True Church." We do not want to call them, whatever they appear to be, "a church," because Christ only built one AND IT IS NOT A BUILDING. The others are "buildings" with a name associated with the building that allows people to gather, and supposedly assemble to worship. Christ said: Matt 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Therefore, it only make sense if there can only be "One True Church," why have buildings with all the various identifications that assemble under the guise of CHRISTIANITY? In our quest to find the "One True Church" that Christ was going to build, it seemed reasonable to find out the Characteristics of that "One True Church." Therefore, we set out to find the Characteristics of that Church which will prove to the reader there is only "One." It only takes logic, a sensible mind and a sincere desire to learn the truth, then, the reader can only come to that conclusion. We will present to you scripturally, many of these Characteristics (16) in number, with scripture to prompt a person to undoubtedly come to agreement with its content. It is simple, and straightforward with no path to be taken, no theological disagreements can be asserted except the truth. We have anticipated questions that the reader may ask, and have given the reader the question, and a scriptural answer to that question. There are (14) questions of interest the writer believes you would ask, if we were face to face having a conversation of these biblical studies. A complete list of beliefs are written in which we feel strongly that denominations in fact have "Unity." Although, many denominations do not realize that "born again" Christians have (estimated) approximately 90% "unity" and 10% disunity with Christian Based Assemblies. Our Lord in His Prayer wanted us all to be as ONE. Then of course, this would make 100% in unity. The 10% are very major differences, and as to why this difference exists, I attempt to point those out to the reader. All scriptur
