Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1972, the variational principle of Ekeland has found many applications in different fields of Analysis. Some are very scattered in the literature and therein lies the motivation of these notes. They are intended for the use of students and therefore include several detours through related material. Some readers may be surprised to find a chapter on Nemytskii mappings: however their properties are seldom proved though often referred to and the proofs presented here are more straightforward than those in the standard sources of Krasnoselskii or Vainberg. Two chapters cover applications to (semilinear elliptic) PDE. The central chapter is on Brézis' proof of the minimax theorems of Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz. To keep the text self-contained, some convex analysis is developed (for the treatment of the duality mapping) and some geometry of Banach spaces. These notes are based on a course given by the author at the Tata Institute in 1987.

Book excerpt: From its origins in the minimization of integral functionals, the notion of variations has evolved greatly in connection with applications in optimization, equilibrium, and control. This book develops a unified framework and provides a detailed exposition of variational geometry and subdifferential calculus in their current forms beyond classical and convex analysis. Also covered are set-convergence, set-valued mappings, epi-convergence, duality, and normal integrands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear analysis, formerly a subsidiary of linear analysis, has advanced as an individual discipline, with its own methods and applications. Moreover, students can now approach this highly active field without the preliminaries of linear analysis. As this text demonstrates, the concepts of nonlinear analysis are simple, their proofs direct, and their applications clear. No prerequisites are necessary beyond the elementary theory of Hilbert spaces; indeed, many of the most interesting results lie in Euclidean spaces. In order to remain at an introductory level, this volume refrains from delving into technical difficulties and sophisticated results not in current use. Applications are explained as soon as possible, and theoretical aspects are geared toward practical use. Topics range from very smooth functions to nonsmooth ones, from convex variational problems to nonconvex ones, and from economics to mechanics. Background notes, comments, bibliography, and indexes supplement the text.

Book excerpt: This book describes recent developments in a wide range of areas, including the modeling, analysis and control of dynamical systems, and explores related applications. The book provided a forum where researchers have shared their ideas, results on theory, and experiments in application problems. The current literature devoted to dynamical systems is quite large, and the authors’ choice for the considered topics was motivated by the following considerations. Firstly, the mathematical jargon for systems theory remains quite complex and the authors feel strongly that they have to maintain connections between the people of this research field. Secondly, dynamical systems cover a wider range of applications, including engineering, life sciences and environment. The authors consider that the book is an important contribution to the state of the art in the fuzzy and dynamical systems areas.

Book excerpt: In the case of completely integrable systems, periodic solutions are found by inspection. For nonintegrable systems, such as the three-body problem in celestial mechanics, they are found by perturbation theory: there is a small parameter € in the problem, the mass of the perturbing body for instance, and for € = 0 the system becomes completely integrable. One then tries to show that its periodic solutions will subsist for € -# 0 small enough. Poincare also introduced global methods, relying on the topological properties of the flow, and the fact that it preserves the 2-form L~=l dPi 1\ dqi' The most celebrated result he obtained in this direction is his last geometric theorem, which states that an area-preserving map of the annulus which rotates the inner circle and the outer circle in opposite directions must have two fixed points. And now another ancient theme appear: the least action principle. It states that the periodic solutions of a Hamiltonian system are extremals of a suitable integral over closed curves. In other words, the problem is variational. This fact was known to Fermat, and Maupertuis put it in the Hamiltonian formalism. In spite of its great aesthetic appeal, the least action principle has had little impact in Hamiltonian mechanics. There is, of course, one exception, Emmy Noether's theorem, which relates integrals ofthe motion to symmetries of the equations. But until recently, no periodic solution had ever been found by variational methods.

Book excerpt: Set-valued optimization is a vibrant and expanding branch of mathematics that deals with optimization problems where the objective map and/or the constraints maps are set-valued maps acting between certain spaces. Since set-valued maps subsumes single valued maps, set-valued optimization provides an important extension and unification of the scalar as well as the vector optimization problems. Therefore this relatively new discipline has justifiably attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. This book presents, in a unified framework, basic properties on ordering relations, solution concepts for set-valued optimization problems, a detailed description of convex set-valued maps, most recent developments in separation theorems, scalarization techniques, variational principles, tangent cones of first and higher order, sub-differential of set-valued maps, generalized derivatives of set-valued maps, sensitivity analysis, optimality conditions, duality and applications in economics among other things.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equilibrium Problems and Applications develops a unified variational approach to deal with single-valued, set-valued and quasi-equilibrium problems. The authors promote original results in relationship with classical contributions to the field of equilibrium problems. The content evolved in the general setting of topological vector spaces and it lies at the interplay between pure and applied nonlinear analysis, mathematical economics, and mathematical physics. This abstract approach is based on tools from various fields, including set-valued analysis, variational and hemivariational inequalities, fixed point theory, and optimization. Applications include models from mathematical economics, Nash equilibrium of non-cooperative games, and Browder variational inclusions. The content is self-contained and the book is mainly addressed to researchers in mathematics, economics and mathematical physics as well as to graduate students in applied nonlinear analysis. A rigorous mathematical analysis of Nash equilibrium type problems, which play a central role to describe network traffic models, competition games or problems arising in experimental economics Develops generic models relevant to mathematical economics and quantitative modeling of game theory, aiding economists to understand vital material without having to wade through complex proofs Reveals a number of surprising interactions among various equilibria topics, enabling readers to identify a common and unified approach to analysing problem sets Illustrates the deep features shared by several types of nonlinear problems, encouraging readers to develop further this unifying approach from other viewpoints into economic models in turn
