Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thrust augmentation, lift augmentation and noise reduction characteristics of compact ejectors make them potentially attractive for propulsion lift systems; however in the past, poor thrust augmentation results have negated the other benefits. This report covers the general characteristics of ejectors pointing out what makes them attractive and why only certain types of ejectors are of interest. It reviews the key requirements for high performance thrust augmentation. It also presents a summary of the performance results achieved thus far and proposes some possible applications for various types of V/STOL aircraft. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is developed for determining a representative value of the maximum efficiency that can be achieved with high performance ejectors when operating on the supersonic solution branch of an ejector. These efficiencies are used to calculate thrust augmentation for an ejector over a wide range of parameters including operation with a hypothetical engine. Reasonable values of thrust augmentation can be achieved at low subsonic flight mach numbers. However, at flight Mach numbers near one, little or not thrust augmentation was found. At supersonic flight Mach numbers, thrust augmentation was achieved. Basic studies indicated that the effects of temperature was opposite at subsonic and supersonic flight Mach numbers. Thrust augmentation decreased with increasing temperature at subsonic Mach number sand increased with increasing temperature at supersonic Mach numbers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joint Institute for Aeronautics and Acoustics at Stanford University was established in October 1973 to provide an academic environment for long-term cooperative research between Stanford and NASA Ames Research Center. Since its establishment, the In stitute has wnducted theoretical and experimental work in the areas of aerodynamics, acoustics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, guid ance and control, and human factors. This research has involved Stanford faculty, research associates, graduate students, and many distinguished visitors in collaborative efforts with the research staff of NASA Ames Research Center. The occasion of the Institute's tenth anniversary was used to reflect back on where that research has brought us, and to consider where our endeavors should be directed next. Thus, an International Symposium was held to review recent advances in the fields relevant to the activities of the Institute and to discuss the areas of research to be undertaken in the future. This anniversary was also chosen a.."1 an opportunity to honor one of the Institute's founders and its di rector, Professor Krishnamurty Karamcheti. It has been his creative inspiration that has provided the ideal research environment at the Joint Institute. The International Symposium on Recent Advances in Aero dynamics and Aconstics was held at Stanford University, Stanford, California, U.S.A., August 22-26, 198:~. Thirty-five distinguished scientists were invited to present a comprehensive review on the fol lowing subject areas: unsteady aerodynamics, jets and shear layers, V /STOL aircraft aerodynamics, rotor dynamics and aerodynamics,.

Download or read book An Overview of Ejector Technology Development in the Air Force written by K. S. Nagaraja and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, Air Force has made significant contributions to the development of the ejector technology for thrust augmentation purposes. Initially, Aerospace Research Laboratories at WPAFB undertook a major task of demonstrating that compact, thrust augmenting ejectors could be designed. After ARL successfully demonstrated that by utilizing hypermixing nozzles, thrust augmentation ratio of the order of two could be achieved, Flight Dynamics Laboratory launched a program of conducting preliminary design of an ejector thrust augmented demonstrator aircraft. ARL's work laid the foundation for a systematic study of the ejector application for V/STOL aircraft.

Download or read book V-STOL Ejector Short Diffuser Study written by R. M. O'Donnell and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of thrust augmenting ejectors has produced ejector/diffuser configurations capable of achieving the high levels of thrust augmentation necessary for VTOL aircraft propulsion requirements. Experimental testing has shown that thrust augmenting ejectors can be made more compact by reducing diffuser length with active diffusion boundary layer control employing the Antiseparation Tailored Contour (ATC). Thrust augmentation and internal flow measurements were determined in compact high performance thrust augmentors with various length diffusers. The short ATC/diffusers tested showed significant improvements when compared to previous ejector diffusers. Measured thrust augmentation ratios with an optimum short ATC/diffuser were 10% greater than those with an equivalent straight wall diffuser. Length reductions of 36% were indicated for nominal augmentation ratios of 1.7. The important factors which influence the design and operation of compact thrust augmentor ejector/diffusers have been defined. (Author).

Book Synopsis Lift System Induced Aerodynamics of V/STOL Aircrtaft in a Moving Deck Environment by : James H. Kamman
Download or read book Lift System Induced Aerodynamics of V/STOL Aircrtaft in a Moving Deck Environment written by James H. Kamman and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propulsive lift system induced aerodynamics of multi-jet VSTOL aircraft configurations were experimentally evaluated over a moving deck and at static hover conditions. Several model configurations representative of advanced subsonic and supersonic VSTOL aircraft were tested. Dynamic jet-induced force and moment data were obtained for heaving, pitching, and rolling motions of a simulated seaborne landing platform over a range of heights, amplitudes, and frequencies. Configuration effects were assessed at both static hover and deck motion conditions, including the effects of wing height, fuselage contouring, lift improvement devices, and nozzle arrangement. In addition, tests were performed to separate the effects of deck motion on the fountain impingement forces. Empirical procedures were defined to aid in predicting the dynamic jet- induced forces and moment variations with deck motion. Configuration design and model testing guidelines for VSTOL aircraft are described. Recommendations are also made for further research to provide additional information required to develop generalized prediction procedures.
Book Synopsis Propulsion Systems for Supersonic V/STOL Aircraft by : W. J. Lewis (Writer on supersonic aircraft)
Download or read book Propulsion Systems for Supersonic V/STOL Aircraft written by W. J. Lewis (Writer on supersonic aircraft) and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program covering the design and early technology development of Configuration E-7, a supersonic STOVL Fighter/Attack aircraft, is described. This aircraft uses the ejector principle to augment engine fan air for vertical lift. The initial design objectives selected in 1980 are listed and discussed. Some design considerations applicable to the propulsion concept and the chosen configuration are mentioned. The test program accomplished thus far, including wind tunnel models plus other test articles and activities, is outlined. The program has proceeded without major technological obstacles and a full-scale engine-powered model will soon be ready for testing.
Book Synopsis Thrust Augmentation Considerations for Stol and Extended Cruise Propulsion by : William S. Campbell
Download or read book Thrust Augmentation Considerations for Stol and Extended Cruise Propulsion written by William S. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of thrust augmentation concepts to short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft propulsion is described for some typical installations. Aerodynamic and ejector thrust effects are treated separately so that the performance of the ejector-powered wing can be calculated as that of a jet-flapped airfoil and the ejector thrust components then added. Some considerations on the performance of the ejector-powered wing in cruise are included. A program for ejector calculations is given. (Author).
