Judith Beniston analyses his changing responses to it against an unfamiliar backdrop - the revival of Catholic drama which, from the 1890s onwards, accompanied the rise of Austria's Christian Social party. The solipsism of `Jung Wien' and the conservative modernism of the Salzburg Festival are juxtaposed with the career of Richard von Kralik (1852-1934), the key figure in Austria's Catholic literary culture from 1890 to 1934. This study offers close readings of Das kleine Welttheater and Das Salzburger grosse Welttheater, and explores the ramifications of the fascination with the notion of Welttheater which Hofmannsthal and Kralik shared. He was convinced that the Aristotelian ideal of audience catharsis through identification with a hero and the resultant experience of terror and pity worked against his goal of bettering society. He did not want his audiences to feel, but to think, and his main theoretical thrusts -- Verfremdungseffekte (de-familiarization effects) and epic theater, among others -- were conceived in pursuit of this goal. This is the first detailed study in English of Brecht's writings on the theater to take account of works first made available in the recent German edition of his collected works. It offers in-depth analyses of Brecht's canonical essays on the theater from 1930 to the late 1940s and early GDR years. Close readings of the individual essays are supplemented by surveys of the changing connotations within Brecht's dramaturgical oeuvre of key theoretical terms, including epic and anti-Aristotelian theater, de-familiarization, historicization, and dialectical theater. Brecht's distinct contribution to the theorizing of acting and audience response is examined in detail, and each theoretical essay and concept is placed in the context of the aesthetic debates of the time, subjected to a critical assessment, and considered in light of subsequent scholarly thinking. In many cases, the playwright's theoretical discourse is shown to employ methods of "epic" presentation and techniques of de-familiarization that are corollaries of the dramatic techniques for which his plays are justly famous. The essays collected in this volume constitute the first collection in English on the German writer Lenz (1751-1792). They grew out of the International J.M.R. Lenz Symposium organized by Professor Madland and held in October 1991at the University of Oklahoma. Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, a writer whose work has received increasing attention lately for its prefiguration of the theater of our own century, emerges in these articles written by prominent Germanists and literary critics as a man ahead of his times, bedeviled by the neuroses of modernity. At the beginning of his career in the early 1770s, Lenz was so highly regarded that he was compared to Goethe. But Lenz had trouble establishing himself both socially and as a writer, and only Der Hofmeister was staged during his lifetime. By the time of his death at the age of 42, he had been almost forgotten by his contemporaries. General essays focus on Lenz's interest in linguistic matters, showing that he saw the unlocking of the potential of language as an act of liberation; on literary genre and sexual gender in Lenz's work; and, linking Lenz's characters to those of the twentieth century, on the rise of the lowly hero from Lenz to Georg Büchner to Bertolt Brecht.
