Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casco Issues is a magazine published by Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory, which explores recurring issues that emerge from Casco's program. The twelfth edition of Casco Issues, Generous Structures, is a playful enquiry into "playfulness" as a value in critical cultural practice. It positions alternative notions of playing against the grain of neoliberal ideologies of "lifelong learning" and "work as play." By taking the idea of playing and the metaphor of the game as a starting point, the publication addresses what might be called a "ludic turn"--the impact of the notion of play and gaming methods in various research fields and cultural work. Most prominent in the Internet industries and interactive media landscapes, but also in theoretical reflections, historical research, and the work of artists and designers, we are experiencing an interest in play as an educational tool or model for participation. However, with the conscious exception of the game per se, the publication attempts to trace its current impact and critical capacity, and explores various notions as well as concrete modes of play including activities such as learning, sharing, and group work, in relation to space, art, and design. It is driven from a methodological interest in the structure of playing, in its dialectics of rules and possibilities, planning and non-planning, collectivity and individuality. A game, in this sense, is not only characterized by its rules--or, on the contrary, by the liberty of the playing individuals--but is rather a construction of conscious interaction, application and transgression. Co-published with Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory Contributors Zayne Armstrong, Ei Arakawa, Bob Black, Augusto Boal, Ruth Buchanan, Binna Choi, common room, Paul Elliman, ifau & Jesko Fezer, Zachary Formwalt, Beatrice Gibson with Will Holder and John Tilbury, Kleines postfordistisches Drama, Mattin, Hwayeon Nam, Merijn Oudenampsen, Nam June Paik, Anne Querrien, David Reinfurt, Margit Rosen, Katerina Sed , Axel Wieder

Book excerpt: Architecture and the Virtual is a study of architecture as it is reflected in the work of seven contemporary artists, working with the tools of our post-digital age. The book maps the convergence of virtual space and contemporary conceptual art and is an anthropological exploration of artists who deal with transformable space and work through analogue means of image production. Marta Jecu builds her inquiry around interviews with artists and curators in order to explore how these works create the experience of the virtual in architecture. Performativity and neo-conceptualism play important roles in this process and in the efficiency with which these works act in the social space.

Book excerpt: This first volume in the Tate Gallery Liverpool Critical Forum series is derived from a conference held in conjunction with the display of Abstract Expressionist Painting from the USA, which was mounted at Tate Gallery Liverpool from March 1992 to January 1993. The display comprised 21 paintings by 13 artists, including Ad Reinhardt, Norman Lewis, Adolph Gottlieb, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning. The objectives of the conference, involving speakers from the international community of scholarship in the field, were: to elicit new observations, critical judgments and proposals from the knowledge base of abstract expressionism and perhaps to challenge some of its prevailing conventions; and to debate the role of the Tate Gallery Liverpool as a modifier of this field of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the resurgent interest in painting and the proliferation of new digital media in recent years, this generously illustrated book delineates painting's complex relationship with information technology. In a survey that begins in the mid-twentieth century, long before the birth of the Internet, this book traces painting’s capacity to digest and transform other media, even as its own legitimacy has been questioned. Featuring the work of numerous renowned artists, from Sigmar Polke to Nicole Eisenman and from Cy Twombly to Amy Sillman, the book examines how painting has addressed digital technology as it relates to human experience and perception, and includes three in-depth essays and additional texts by influential thinkers from the field. Comprehensive and lavishly illustrated, the book presents a wide range of works that reconsider the assumed opposition of the digital and the analog, the human and the technological, arguing that painting has served as a means to represent—and even enact—new media. This book affirms the ongoing vitality of the medium of painting in the midst of a digital world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the avant-garde of art needs to be rehabilitated today Since the decidedly bleak beginning of the twenty-first century, art practice has become increasingly politicized. Yet few have put forward a sustained defence of this development. Revolutionary Time and the Avant-Garde is the first book to look at the legacy of the avant-garde in relation to the deepening crisis of contemporary capitalism. An invigorating revitalization of the Frankfurt School legacy, Roberts’s book defines and validates the avant-garde idea with an erudite acuity, providing a refined conceptual set of tools to engage critically with the most advanced art theorists of our day, such as Hal Foster, Andrew Benjamin, Alain Badiou, Jacques Rancière, Paolo Virno, Claire Bishop, Michael Hardt, and Toni Negri.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Posing questions about memory, the body, folklore and rituals, Jumana Emil Abboud's artistic practice confronts the telling and retelling of history and the impacts of language and the fragmentation of memories. The Jerusalem-based artist's oeuvre includes visual, poetic and text-based projects spanning 20 years; In aching agony and longing I wait for you by the Spring of Thieves focuses on two projects--Maskouneh (Inhabited), 2015-2017, and I Feel Nothing, 2012-2015. Closing the book are contributions by Marina Warner and Tina Sherwell that thoughtfully engage with Abboud's practice at large. The two main chapters of In aching agony and longing I wait for you by the Spring of Thieves focus on Abboud's long engagement with folktales from Palestine and elsewhere. The first chapter brings together drawings, video stills and performance excerpts, all of which belong to Maskouneh (Inhabited), a series that explores Abboud's connection to the landscape and folktales of her homeland. These works are paired with journal entries from her recent collaboration with filmmaker Issa Freij, in which they return to haunted springs and water wells described in 1922 by ethnographer Tawfiq Canaan. A second chapter similarly represents drawings and video stills from Abboud's series I Feel Nothing, inspired by a Palestinian variant of the folktale "The Girl Whose Hands were Cut Off". In aching agony and longing I wait for you by the Spring of Thieves marks the finissage of Abboud's solo exhibition, The Horse, the Bird, the Tree and the Stone at Bildmuseet in Sweden and the inauguration of her dedicated show The pomegranate and the sleeping ghoul at Darat al Funun-The Khalid Shoman Foundation in Jordan.

Book excerpt: Published in conjunction with the eponymous installation at Art Basel 2015, DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY is an extension of the collaboration between artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, architects Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Müller, and chef Antto Melasniemi. Designed by Hirsch and Müller as an outdoor shelter, the installation, made of modular bamboo and steel, welcomes visitors to engage in discussions while participating in the convivial atmosphere of shared food. This supplemental publication includes interviews, texts, images, and poems that illuminate the installation's properties of self-sufficiency and how it was conceived as a new component of Tiravanija and Kamin Lertchaiprasert's ongoing project "the land," a self-sustaining artistic community near Chiang Mai, Thailand. At the end of the festival, the structure will be transported to Thailand and will be the first building block of a new workshop on the land. In a continuation of conversations among artists surrounding the land, this book explores urbanization in a post-rural condition, the act of building as a collaborative process, and land as a concept that can exist outside of ownership. A discussion with Hirsch, Tiravanija, Melasniemi, and Jörn Schafaff reflects on the way in which the installation builds on the land's objectives relating to improvisation, collaboration, and the questioning of institutional structures. Also featured in the book are recipes developed by Melasniemi on the occasion of this installation-as-workshop, where the public is invited to participate in the cooking process. Book excerpt: Across a powerfully wide-ranging set of themes, theoretical registers and historical examples, John Roberts analyses the key problems that continue to confront art after conceptual art, in the light of art’s longstanding relationship to market and institution the commodity and mass culture: namely, artistic labour and technology, modernity and the ‘new’, art and negation, identity and subjectivity, agency and audience, form and value. In these terms, the book provides a rigorous and ambitious, examination of the limits and possibilities of art’s contribution to emancipatory discourse and practice.
