Following the success of the first meeting held in the New Forest, home of the Wessex Institute of Technology, in 2012, it considers the pressing issues related to environmental impacts in order to provide complete solutions. The included papers discuss how to assess the impact of economic constraints on the environment, considering the social aspects as well as any resulting environmental damage. The overuse of natural resources and the resulting pollution of the environment need to be better understood in financial terms. Uncontrolled development can result in damage to the environment in terms of the release of toxic substances and hazardous waste. The increasing number of new chemical compounds poses a major challenge to the environment as it is difficult in many cases to predict their effects and take appropriate decisions. Their economic impact can be particularly challenging. The book examines issues related to whether some forms of development are compatible with environmental protection, particularly in cases of possible serious contamination and toxicity. The demand for development land has led to the reuse of properties that have been abandoned for a variety of reasons. Many of them are brownfields, sites which have deteriorated in different ways, including by contamination. These sites are usually a burden in terms of economic losses and contribute to the detriment of the quality of life of entire neighbourhoods. Rehabilitation of local fields, particularly those that are contaminated can be an expensive undertaking and require not only technical solutions but the involvement of financial, regulatory and community stakeholders. Fundamental to this premise is the analysis of the risks involved and the development of appropriate strategies. The papers address problems of great importance discussing more constructive and progressive approaches to ensure sustainability. A major motivation for the meeting is to learn from past failures, to avoid repeating similar mistakes, while attempting to prevent emerging threats to the environmental and ecological systems. The Egyptian government has launched Egypt’s Vision 2030 in line with the 2030 Agenda, also known as the Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS), which encompasses the economic, social and environmental dimensions of development. It is under the SDS that all development plans in Egypt are incorporated while at the same time being strongly guided by the SDGs. Aware of the principle of shared but differentiated responsibility, Egypt also recognizes that fundamental challenges remain, despite a strong willingness to achieve the SDGs. High birth rates, brain drain phenomena, water scarcity, migration, discrimination against women and girls, a growing informal sector and instability in neighboring states (especially Libya and Syria) are only some of the many hindrances to sustainable development. In order to address these challenges, Egypt relies heavily on the SDGs, which are aimed at transforming our world. Although there is an urgent need for a drastic change in the way we use the Earth, the question arises as to whether the SDGs are sufficient to facilitate such a transformation. This book explores the key environmentally related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and offers a cutting-edge assessment of current progress with a view to reaching these objectives by 2030. The book highlights some of the key findings and ideas for how research may help achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in enterprises. The first chapter deals with the concept of energy, different forms of energy, energy efficiency, the classification of renewable and non-renewable energy and its various resources, whether mechanical, electrical, magnetic, chemical or hydrogen energy. The second chapter deals with the availability of solar radiation at various latitudes and the analysis of energy generated by solar collector, different types of solar collectors and concentrators, solar energy applications as in solar water heating systems, solar distillation sets, solar cookers, energy use and drying crops. Chapter three discusses the fundamentals of photovoltaic modules, while in the fourth chapter, electrothermal energy was manipulated. Chapter five introduces the basics of wind energy for a renewable energy source, where the physics of wind energy, generation techniques, applications, types of modern turbines used in generation are explored, as well as, the challenges facing the industry have been highlighted. Chapter six elucidates the heat energy of the Earth. The seventh chapter deals with biomass energy, biofuels and biogas. In chapter eight, hydrogen was explained as a source of renewable energy, where hydrocarbons used to obtain hydrogen were also highlighted, as well as different ways of obtaining hydrogen gas using either solar, biochemical or chemical methods, as well as hydrogen storage and transport techniques. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of this type of energy were manipulated in details. The ninth chapter deals with hydroelectric power, providing the types of dams, calculating the dam energy output, methods of measuring flow rates, how hydropower stations work, types of turbines suitable for a certain dam, the fundamentals of small generation plants. In chapter ten, future fuels from algae were expounded. Since, Algal farms were studied in terms of specifications, nutrition, harvesting, different methods of extracting oil and bioreactors, research and developments in this field, fuel for aircraft, food and chemical products that can be obtained from algae, in addition to integration this technology with other sources of renewable energy. The Commission' work in this area follows a detailed strategy which was published earlier as part of the proceedings of Volume I, Series F. Series F is especially devoted to publications on the European Communities' work on solar radiation data. Other volumes within Series F are in preparation and will deal with: - solar radiation data on tilted planes; - solar radiation data derived from meteorological satellite obs- tions. In addition, two new atlases are being prepared, one showing - for the area of the European Community - maps for solar radiation on titled planes of various inclinations and orientations, and the other showing - for the whole of Europe and the Eastern part of the Mediterranean - radiation data for horizontal planes. In the latter there will also be a statistical analy sis section. Both atlases will be published in the course of 1983.
