A postcript has been added drawing attention to significant developments since. The remaining essays are devided into five parts, as follows: The International Court of Justice and International Litigation; The Law of Treaties and the Sources of Law; The Law of the Sea; Jewish and Israeli Matters; and In Memoriam. Some of these essays, notably those on Jewish and Israeli Matters, were originally written in Hebrew and have been especially translated for this volume. Book excerpt: Drawing upon Robbie Sabel's first-hand involvement with many legal negotiations in the Arab-Israeli conflict, International Law and the Arab-Israeli Conflict examines international law in relation to the conflict by analysing its major events and agreements, both historical and contemporary. Outlining the role of international law from the collapse of the Ottoman Empire until the present day, it considers the legal elements of the various peace treaties that Israel has signed with its neighbouring Arab States. Using his expertise as a professor, practitioner and ambassador, Sabel endeavours to represent both sides of the conflict, offering a wealth of counter-arguments and adding his own legal interpretations. With this valuable resource, students and researchers working within a range of disciplines can fully appreciate the role of international law in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war of June 1967 between Israel and Arab states was widely perceived as being forced on Israel to prevent the annihilation of its people by Arab armies hovering on its borders. Documents now declassified by key governments question this view. The UK, USSR, France and the USA all knew that the Arab states were not in attack mode and tried to dissuade Israel from attacking. In later years, this war was held up as a precedent allowing an attack on a state that is expected to attack. It has even been used to justify a pre-emptive assault on a state expected to attack well in the future. Given the lack of evidence that it was waged by Israel in anticipation of an attack by Arab states, the 1967 war can no longer serve as such a precedent. This book seeks to provide a corrective on the June 1967 war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of Historic Titles in International Law has been much discussed in recent years. In particular, it was an issue of some im portance in several international arbitrations, such as the Gulf of Fon seca case, decided by the Central American Court of Justice; the Island of Palmas case, decided by Judge Huber as sole arbitrator, under the auspices of the Permanent Court of Arbitration; the case concerning the Legal Status rif Eastern Greenland before the Permanent Court of International Justice; and, more recently still, the cases concerning Fisheries (United Kingdom v. Norway); Minquiers and Ecrehos Islets (U nited Kingdom v. France) ; Certain Frontier Land (Belgium v. N ether lands); and Temple rif Preah Vihear (Cambodia v. Thailand), before the International Court of Justice. Historic Titles are probably also a re levant factor in a number of territorial disputes that have not yet been submitted to arbitration or judicial settlement. The recent controversies over the proper breadth for the territorial sea and the exclusive fishing limits of coastal States have brought to the fore new aspects of the problem.

This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an urgent need for a solution to the Arab-Israel conflict, but so far no comprehensive solution has been found. The search for a solution must be based on knowledge of the facts and of the relevant documents. There might be exist disagreement among the various parties on the facts, and the documents may be subject to differing interpretations, but it is indispensible that those who study the conflict and those who deal with it have the plain text of the basic documents readily available. This collection includes a wide range of documents including, inter alia, texts of agreements, of official documents of the Leage of Nations and of the United Nations, of official proposals and of relevant national documents. It covers a period of almost one hundred years, but it focuses mainly on documents dating from recent decades. The editors have put together an objective collection including about ninety of the main, relevant texts, irrespective of whose claim may find support in them. This volume will be of help to scholars and to students, to historians and to political scientists, to experts in international law and international relations, to journalists, to politicians and to diplomats. The availability of this collection may make it easier for the conflict to be studied and to be solved.
