Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt and Scythia There is tradition of Herodotus at the Olympic Festival, reciting his History, moving the young Thucydides to tears of emotion, and having its nine books named after the nine Muses by the as sembled Greeks in their enthusiasm. It is more likely that they were so named by some later grammarian, for the History contains passages that could only have been written when the historian was more than seventy years old, and it broke off unfinished, as if at the finish of the writer's life. It was the free and simple utterance of an Old man who loved truth and the poets, took deep interest in life, on the Divine side as well as the human, and had seen many men and many lands, studying all with special reference to the History that he had planned for his life's work. As he wrote on, the fulness of his store, and thoroughness in telling what he had to tell, caused him to broaden out into explanatory episodes, of which the most famous is the account of Egypt given in this volume. Hen Egypt came, with the acces sion of Cambyse into the history of Persian wars, Herodotus must needs tell what that Egypt was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Ancient Egyptians As works on the early Orient multiply, it becomes more and more easy to produce such books at second and third hand, which are thus separated by a long remove from the original monuments forming our primary sources of knowledge. As the use of this vol ume is in a measure conditioned by the method which produced it, may the author state that it is based di rectly and immediately upon the monuments, and in most cases upon the original monuments, rather than upon any published edition of the same? For this pur pose the historical monuments still standing in Egypt, or installed in the museums of Europe (the latter in to to), were copied or collated by the author anew ad hoc and rendered into English (see infra, p. 445, B. Trans lations, bar). Upon this complete version the present volume rests. Those students who desire to consult the sources upon which any given fact is based, are re ferred to this English corpus. A full bibliography of each original monument, if desired, will also be found there, and hence no references to such technical bibliog raphy will be found herein, thus freeing the reader from a mass of workshop debris, to which, however, he can easily refer, if he desires it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Literature in Ancient Egypt For many centuries past and until recently the civilised world was accustomed to regard the ancient Egyptians as a people leading a monoto nous and joyless life, unrippled by any passing breeze of ordinary human pleasure, and with minds entirely absorbed in meditations on death or in deep religious and philosophical specula tions. It was indebted for this picture in the first place to the allusions made by Greek authors to the wisdom of the Egyptians, while the austerity of Egyptian plastic representations Of gods and men, and the vital significance ascribed by this people to all rites and worship connected with the dead, pointed to the same conclusion. This view of the matter was confirmed by the tone of the pompous royal inscriptions and almost exclusively religious texts which were the earliest results of the deciphering of Egyptian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Books on Egypt and Chaldaea Reader in a handy form an account of the principal ideas and beliefs held by the ancient Egyptians con cerning the resurrection and the future life, which is derived wholly from native religious works.\ The literature of Egypt which deals with these subj/ects is large and, as was to be expected, the product of different periods which, taken together, cover several thousands of years; and it is exceedingly difficult at times to reconcile the statements and beliefs of a writer of one period with those of a writer of another. Up to the present no systematic account of the doctrine of the resurrection and of the future life has been discovered, and there is no reason for hoping that such a thing will ever be found, for the Egyptians do not appear to have thought that it was necessary to write a work of the kind. The inherent difficulty of the subject, and the natural impossibility that different men living in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arts of Ancient Egypt: A Lecture Delivered Before the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts Another foreign Introductlon was the burlal of Slave images. In the tombs of the period of the Empire images are generally found, bearing in either hand a hoe, and with a basket on the back an inscription around them recording that they were to be vivified in the future state, and work for the deceased person, cultivating his fields with the hoes and carrying the earth in the basket. Now these figures, which are found by the hundred in the later times of the Empire, are absolutely unknown in the Old or Middle King dom before the Hyksos invasion, and the earliest examples, Dr. Birch thinks, may belong to the eighteenth dynasty: the beginning of the Empire. These figures are evidently cheap substitutes for Slaves immolated at the grave of their master, to accompany him to the future world, a sub stitution in the same Spirit as the use of paper dollars by the Chinese in their ancestral offerings. And when we think of the ghastly Scythic funerals described by Hero dotus, and consider that during historic times we know the Scythians to have made inroads in the'southern parts of Asia, we can hardly fail to regard this ceremonial slave burial appearing first after the Hyksos invasion, as another of the Asiatic ideas imported into Egypt, and perhaps adopted by the Hyksos originally from more northern tribes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egyptian Chronicles, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Harmony of Sacred and Egyption Chronology, and an Appendix on Babylonian and Assyrian Antiquities But first it may be proper to enter into some preliminary details, explaining how a remark which might have been made equally at Oxford, or at Rome, or wherever else one chanced to light upon the text which suggested it, and which might have been equally followed out to its con sequences by any classical scholar, however ignorant of Egyptian antiquities, came to be made in a boat on the Nile, so that the author while pursuing afterwards his discovery to its consequences was not under the disadvantage of being totally unacquainted with Egypt and its monuments, but had laid in the country itself a foundation to which it was easy to add from published works and from an inspection of the chief museums of Europe. At the same time the narrative now to be given will sufficiently account for all those short comings which will no doubt be detected by competent judges in what may be said on points of detail respecting the monuments and the results hitherto obtained from their study.
