Current historical narratives paint ecclesiology after the Council of Trent as dominated by juridical concerns, uniformity, and institutionalism. Purportedly neglected are the spiritual, diverse, and missional aspects of the Church. This book challenges such narratives by investigating the Spanish Jesuit Francisco Suâarez's theology of ecclesial unity and catholicity. Analyzing standard as well as overlooked sources of Suâarez's ecclesiology, the author shows how Suâarez wrestles with the new demands of his time and anticipates later ecumenical developments in twentieth-century Catholic ecclesiology. Early modern expansion prompted theologians after Trent to reckon with the ecclesial status of baptized Protestants, the Greek Orthodox, and non-believers in the New World. It further prompted reflection on the universality, or catholicity, of the Church, and how the Church's mission to the nations serves her greater unity in Christ. Throughout this exposition, the author reveals Suâarez's vision of the Church to be deeply spiritual, diverse, and missional-not at the expense of the institutional, but as it's necessary and life-giving source. The Church, for Suâarez, is primarily a way of life. This book explores not only Suâarez's speculative ecclesiology, but how the unity and catholicity of the body of Christ is lived out in practice, that is, in the worship and works of the faithful, and, most notably, in the charism of his own religious order, the Society of Jesus. Suâarez thus shows his readers what the spiritual dynamic between Christic unity and missional catholicity should look like in the Church"--

Book excerpt: The main purpose of The Fathers of the Church in Christian Theology is to argue that Patristic studies still has much to contribute to theological reflections in our time. Throughout history, the reading of the Fathers of the Church has made major contributions to Christian thinking. This fecundity was notably verified in the 20th century through the work of theologians like Henri de Lubac and Hans Urs von Balthasar. It was as well manifested broadly in the life of the church that, with the Vatican II council, drew from the patristic tradition a source of inspiration for its own renewal. However, even though the research and work on early Christianity has experienced considerable growth for several decades, Christian theology is today confronted with new questions. Thus, what status to recognize in the exegesis of the Fathers? Has not the distance from the heritage of patristic thinking been widened? Book excerpt: Both Ephesians 4:11 and I Corinthians 12:29 attest to the distinctiveness of the roles of pastor and teacher; and Nicholas claims that for the majority of recent history, since the rise of Scholasticism, this distinction has been strictly adhered to. Therise of the Scholastic method within theological discourse radically transformed the way theology was envisioned, from its bases and method to its purpose and sources. This change had a far-reaching effect on theology which would contribute to the discipline's self-understanding. Whereas theology was initially more of a meditation on and exposition of God's self-disclosure in the Word, in the new style of theological discourse practiced by the schoolmen, theology increasingly became the methodical parsing of abstract truth which was dissociated from the concrete realities of an embodied Christianity. However, one need not maintain the possibility of distinct roles to the detriment of seeing both offices in a single individual. Indeed the New Testament and the early Fathers consistently exhibit a complete naivete concerning such a divide. The writers of the New Testament and the early Fathers were seen as 'complete personalities', who were unable to envisage the separation of theology and spirituality. Jean Danielou's Doxological Humanism is primarily a discussion of the ways in which academic theology can reacquaint itself with spirituality and the reasons it should. Nicholas turns to the writings of Jesuit theologian, historian and cardinal Jean Danielou and finds an understanding of who we are that necessitates this union. Further, for Danielou, an essential aspect of this unified view of the human person is its doxological nature. To attain the fullest expression of humanity is to participate in the adoration, worship and contemplation involved in the life of prayer.
