Book excerpt: Next, we developed algorithms for compact representation of the 1- and 2-dimensional tries used for Internet packet classification; the succinct representation is to support high-speed packet classification by leveraging a small but fast SRAM storage system. We compared our compact representations with competing compact representations for 1- and 2-dimensional packet classifiers. Ours reduced the number of memory accesses required for a lookup and the memory required to store the classifier. We also proposed a method--recursive partitioning--to partition a IP router table so that when each partition is represented using a base structure such as a multibit trie or a hybrid shape-shifting trie there is a reduction in the total memory required for the router table and in the total number of memory accesses needed to search the table. We compared the efficacy of recursive partitioning to that of the popular front-end table method to partition IP router tables. Our proposed recursive partitioning method outperformed the front-end method on all of our test sets. We proposed a scheme to couple TCAMs and high bandwidth SRAMs so as to overcome both the power and size limitations of a pure TCAM forwarding engine. Our scheme can be used to search router tables whose size is much larger than the TCAM size with no loss in time and with power reduction. All of our algorithms and techniques are implementable using a commercial network processor board equipped with a TCAM and multiple SRAMs.

Book excerpt: This book is a revised version of the author's PhD thesis, which was selected as the winning thesis of the 2001 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Competition. Ion Stoica did his PhD work at Carnegie Mellon University with Hui Zhang as thesis adviser. The author addresses the most pressing and difficult problem facing the Internet community today: how to enhance the Internet to support rich functionalities, such as QoS and traffic management, while still maintaining the scalability and robustness properties embodied in the original Internet architecture. The monograph presents complete solutions including architectures, algorithms, and implementations dealing with fundamental problems of today's Internet: providing guaranteed services, differentiated services, and flow protection. Compared to existing solutions, Ion Stoica's solution eliminates the complex operations on both data and control paths in the network core. All in all, the research results presented in this monograph constitute one of the most important contributions to networking research in the past ten years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The past few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless ad hoc networks. The attractiveness of ad hoc networks, in general, is attributed to their characteristics/features such as ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-configure without the involvement of a centralized n- work manager, router, access point or a switch. These features help to set up a network fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a fixed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief operations. Even though ad hoc networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to scalability, quality-of-service, energy efficiency and security.
