Book excerpt: Wireless sensor network is a fast growing area of research, receiving attention not only within the computer science and electrical engineering communities, but also in relation to network optimization, scheduling, risk and reliability analysis within industrial and system engineering. The availability of micro-sensors and low-power wireless communications will enable the deployment of densely distributed sensor/actuator networks. And an integration of such system plays critical roles in many facets of human life ranging from intelligent assistants in hospitals to manufacturing process, to rescue agents in large scale disaster response, to sensor networks tracking environment phenomena, and others. The sensor nodes will perform significant signal processing, computation, and network self-configuration to achieve scalable, secure, robust and long-lived networks. More specifically, sensor nodes will do local processing to reduce energy costs, and key exchanges to ensure robust communications. These requirements pose interesting challenges for networking research. The most important technical challenge arises from the development of an integrated system which is 1)energy efficient because the system must be long-lived and operate without manual intervention, 2)reliable for data communication and robust to attackers because information security and system robustness are important in sensitive applications, such as military. Based on the above challenges, this dissertation provides Quality of Service (QoS) implementation and evaluation for the wireless sensor networks. It includes the following 3 modules, 1) energy-efficient routing, 2) energy-efficient coverage, 3). communication security. Energy-efficient routing combines the features of minimum energy consumption routing protocols with minimum computational cost routing protocols. Energy-efficient coverage provides on-demand sensing and measurement. Information security needs a security key exchange scheme to ensure reliable and robust communication links. QoS evaluation metrics and results are presented based on the above requirements.

Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks are expected to find wide applicability and increasing deployment in coming years, as they enable reliable monitoring and analysis of the environment. Users of such a system will expect to get a real time warning when time-critical situations occur in the network and also to be able to retrieve any required information by issuing queries to the network. In this thesis, we propose a formal classification of sensor networks, based on their mode of functioning, as proactive and reactive networks. In proactive networks data is collected at pre-specified, fixed intervals while reactive strategy requires the nodes to respond immediately ton changes in the relevant parameters of interest. We are able to combine the best features of proactive and reactive networks while minimizing their limitations to create a new type of network called a Hybrid network which not only reacts to time-critical situations, but also gives an overall picture of the network at periodic intervals in a very energy efficient manner. We introduce two new energy efficient protocols, TEEN (Threshold-sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network protocol) for reactive networks and APTEEN (Adaptive Periodic Threshold-sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network protocol) for hybrid networks. We have also proposed a third protocol for routing queries in hybrid networks. This protocol provides the user, flexibility to request either past, present or future data from the network in the form of historical, one-time and persistent queries respectively. We have also analytically determined the delay incurred in handling the various types of queries. To our knowledge, such an analytical modeling has been done for the first time for sensor network queries. These three protocols offer versatility to the users while consuming energy very efficiently by minimizing non-critical data transmissions. We evaluated the performance of these protocols for a simple temperature sensing application with a Poisson arrival rate for queries. In terms of energy efficiency, these protocols have been observed to outperform existing conventional warehousing sensor network protocols.

Packet dropping and modifying is common attack in wireless sensor networks. These attacks interrupt the communication network and are difficult to identify in multi hop sensor networks. This paper presents an effective scheme to identify the packet droppers and modifiers by using ranking algorithms on the DAG generated by the nodes in the network. Simulation results are presented. Analysis of the performance of prominent routing protocols used in Wireless sensor networks with respect to throughput, routing overhead, PDR, delay. These parameters are calculated for the routing protocols AODV, DSDV, TORA, LEACH and the performance is measured and compared for the parameters to improve QoS of WSN. Wireless sensor network can get separated into multiple connected components due to the failure of some of its nodes, which is called a "cut." In this paper, we consider the problem of detecting cuts by the remaining nodes of a wireless sensor network. We propose an algorithm that allows 1) every node to detect when the connectivity to a specially designated node has been lost, and 2) one or more nodes (that are connected to the special node after the cut) to detect the occurrence of the cut. The algorithm is distributed and asynchronous: every node needs to communicate with only those nodes that are within its communication range. The algorithm is based on the iterative computation of a fictitious "electrical potential" of the nodes. The convergence rate of the underlying iterative scheme is independent of the size and structure of the network.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, , language: English, abstract: Sensor nodes have restricted storage, computational and energy resources, these restrictions place a limit on the types of deployable routing mechanisms. Routing protocol disseminates information that enables the sensor nodes to select routes to communicate with other nodes on the network and the choice of the route is determined by the routing algorithms. Thus the routing protocol helps the nodes to gain knowledge about the topology of the network to which it is attached directly. There are mainly two types of routing processes: one is static routing and the other is dynamic routing. In a static routing, the routing tables are set up in a static manner in the nodes. The network routes for the packet are initially set between the nodes. However, if any node on the specified route fails, the data may not reach the destination. In a dynamic routing, routing tables in the routers often change whenever the possible routes change. Dynamic routing is more suitable as the nodes in WSNs may frequently change their position and die at any moment. The routing protocols are classified into single hop and multi hop routing. In a single hop routing, sensor node directly communicates with the sink to share the gathered information. Energy consumption is high in the network using single hop protocol. In multi hop routing, data is routed through the intermediate nodes to the base station. Each node transfers sensed data to the immediate node which in turn transfers the data to the next immediate node and finally the data reaches the base station. Energy consumption in this kind of routing protocol is less and thus the lifetime of the nodes is high. The major challenge to the efficient operation of wireless sensor network lies in its ability to deliver the sensed information from the nodes to the sink within the specific time duration without the loss of data packets with high security. The sensor nodes depend on the battery source for their operation which has limited capacity. Thus the energy resource of the sensor nodes has to be used efficiently in order to increase the operational lifetime of the network.

Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

The aspects of context, privacy, reliability, usability and user experience related to “emerged and exciting new computing paradigm of Ubiquitous Computing”, includes pervasive, grid, and peer-to-peer computing including sensor networks to provide secure computing and communication services at anytime and anywhere. Marc Weiser presented his vision of disappearing and ubiquitous computing more than 15 years ago. The big picture of the computer introduced into our environment was a big innovation and the starting point for various areas of research. In order to totally adopt the idea of ubiquitous computing several houses were build, equipped with technology and used as laboratory in order to find and test appliances that are useful and could be made available in our everyday life. Within the last years industry picked up the idea of integrating ubiquitous computing and already available products like remote controls for your house were developed and brought to the market. In spite of many applications and projects in the area of ubiquitous and pervasive computing the success is still far away. One of the main reasons is the lack of acceptance of and confidence in this technology. Although researchers and industry are working in all of these areas a forum to elaborate security, reliability and privacy issues, that resolve in trustworthy interfaces and computing environments for people interacting within these ubiquitous environments is important. The user experience factor of trust thus becomes a crucial issue for the success of a UbiComp application. The goal of this book is to provide a state the art of Trustworthy Ubiquitous Computing to address recent research results and to present and discuss the ideas, theories, technologies, systems, tools, applications and experiences on all theoretical and practical issues.
