Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, a dramatic increase in traffic volume, axle loads, and tire pressure has led to rapidly deteriorated pavements in the United States. Several types of pavement surface distresses have been noted by many state agencies across the country. Among these distresses, permanent deformation, also known as rutting, is one of the most serious forms of flexible pavement distress. This research investigates the fundamentals of rutting behavior for full-depth flexible pavements. The scope incorporates an experimental study using full-scale accelerated pavement tests (APTs) to monitor the evolution of the transverse profiles of each pavement structural layer. The findings were then employed to improve the rutting model that is embedded in the current pavement design method, the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG).Four APT sections were constructed using two typical pavement structures and two types of surface course material. A mid-depth rut monitoring and automated laser profile system was designed to reconstruct the transverse profiles at each pavement layer interface throughout the process of accelerated pavement deterioration that is produced during the APT. The contributions of each pavement structural layer to rutting and the evolution of layer deformation were derived. This study found that the permanent deformation within asphalt concrete does not increase with an increase in pavement thickness once the pavement is sufficiently thick. Additionally, most pavement rutting is caused by the deformation of the asphalt concrete, with about half the amount of rutting observed within the top four inches of the pavement layers and only around ten percent of rutting observed in the subgrade.A guideline was developed to calibrate the MEPDG prediction models using a database that contains both APT sections and field roadway segments and accounts for the rutting in individual pavement layers. A procedure was developed to provide the most faithful simulations of the APT conditions using virtual weather station generation, special traffic configuration, and falling weight deflectometer evaluation. New calibration factors of the MPEGD rutting model from this study have been successfully implemented by the INDOT design team since 2017.

Book excerpt: The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) has been employed for pavement design by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) since 2009 and has generated efficient pavement designs with a lower cost. It has been demonstrated that the success of MEPDG implementation depends largely on a high level of accuracy associated with the information supplied as design inputs. Vehicular traffic loading is one of the key factors that may cause not only pavement structural failures, such as fatigue cracking and rutting, but also functional surface distresses, including friction and smoothness. In particular, truck load spectra play a critical role in all aspects of the pavement structure design. Inaccurate traffic information will yield an incorrect estimate of pavement thickness, which can either make the pavement fail prematurely in the case of under-designed thickness or increase construction cost in the case of over-designed thickness. The primary objective of this study was to update the traffic design input module, and thus to improve the current INDOT pavement design procedures. Efforts were made to reclassify truck traffic categories to accurately account for the specific axle load spectra on two-lane roads with low truck traffic and interstate routes with very high truck traffic. The traffic input module was updated with the most recent data to better reflect the axle load spectra for pavement design. Vehicle platoons were analyzed to better understand the truck traffic characteristics. The unclassified vehicles by traffic recording devices were examined and analyzed to identify possible causes of the inaccurate data collection. Bus traffic in the Indiana urban areas was investigated to provide additional information for highway engineers with respect to city streets as well as highway sections passing through urban areas. New equivalent single axle load (ESAL) values were determined based on the updated traffic data. In addition, a truck traffic data repository and visualization model and a TABLEAU interactive visualization dashboard model were developed for easy access, view, storage, and analysis of MEPDG related traffic data.

Book excerpt: Until the early 1990s, curling and warping of Portland cement concrete pavement did not concern pavement engineers in many transportation agencies. Since beginning construction of the interstate system in the United States in the late 1950s through the late 1980s, the performance of Portland cement concrete pavement has been associated with properties of concrete as a pavement material. In those years developed standards and design guidelines emphasized better concrete materials and construction control. At the time, combining curling and loading stresses was quite controversial due to the nature of the load-carrying capacity of concrete pavement and the occurrence of types of loads. Arguments developed that the types of loads (traffic and curling) rarely occurred at the same time of day. The concrete pavement design principle did not include the effects of curling and warping of concrete pavement as determining design factors in pavement performance. This research project was initiated as a response from the INDOT Pavement Steering Committee related to the joint spacing of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement in Indiana. There was an initiative in the Committee to reduce the joint spacing from 18 feet to 15 feet as a way to reduce premature concrete pavement deterioration. There was an indication that some newly paved JPCP had transverse cracks even before the pavement section was opened to traffic. In this experimental study, several important conclusions were drawn from temperature analysis, stress-strain analysis, and other data analysis. The analysis from this experimental study supports the decision by INDOT to shorten the concrete pavement joint spacing to increase the performance of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement in Indiana.

Book excerpt: Nondestructive testing has become an integral part for evaluation and rehabilitation strategies of pavements in recent years. Pavement evaluation employing the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can provide valuable information about pavement performance characteristics and be a very useful tool for project prioritization purposes and estimation of construction budget at the network level. FWD deflection testing is an accurate tool for determining pavement structural capacity and estimating the required thickness of overlays and hence is an accurate tool for planning for or estimating required current and future construction budgets. GPR is the only tool that a highway agency may use to develop an inventory of pavement layers thicknesses in the most efficient manner possible. By estimating pavement layer thicknesses and stiffness properties more reliable projections of network rehabilitation strategies and needs can be established, thus resulting in cost effective use of available funds. Traditional obstacles for the use of FWD and GPR in pavement evaluation at the network level used to be expenses involved in data collection, limited resources and lack of simplified analysis procedures. This report presents Indiana experience in pavement evaluation with the FWD and GPR at the network level.
