Book excerpt: This report serves to document progress made to date on the National Science Foundation Project #97-13481, Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Program. The focus of this phase of the project is the development of an improved solution algorithm for fast transient analysis of large, locally nonlinear structures using time domain structural synthesis. The report documents the development of several algorithms intended to improve upon the original algorithm developed by the first author. The last algorithm developed meets the stated goals of the project. This algorithm is a newly developed recursive, block by block convolution solution to the governing nonlinear integral equation. As is demonstrated with a realistically large nonlinear base excitation problem (51, 300 DOF finite element model), the new algorithm provides a 78% reduction in time required for the nonlinear transient base excitation solution, as compared with traditional direct integration. The new algorithm provides an even greater reduction in computer time for subsequent analysis. The nonlinear base isolation solutions calculated using the new algorithm take approximately 7 seconds, as compared with the direct integration solution which takes approximately 30 minutes. The rapid reanalysis capability will facilitate the development of numerical optimization for the design of nonlinear isolation. The theory of transient synthesis is documented, along with a new proof of the exponential convergence properties of an iterative solution to the governing nonlinear integral equation.

This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An efficient method of computing structural response of multi-story nonlinear base isolated buildings for a given seismic event is presented. Using a recursive block-by-block convolution (RBBIEF) solution to the governing nonlinear Volterra integral equation, structural base motion acting through an arbitrary number of nonlinear base isolators can be computed quickly and accurately. The general solution to the governing nonlinear Volterra integral is formulated and subsequently converted into code using MATLAB. The procedure incorporates modal properties, computed from conventional finite element (FE) techniques, and the generated MATLAB programs to solve a varying set of multi- degree of freedom structures coupled to both linear and nonlinear isolators. Ultimately, an analysis is conducted on a 30-story building that was overly designed using the 1994 Load Resistance Factor Design Ref. 1 and the 1994 Uniform Building Codes Ref. 2 for earthquake loading. The method demonstrates that the Volterra integration scheme in the time domain is very effective and efficient.

Book excerpt: There are various techniques to optimize either structural parameters, or structural controllers, but there are not many techniques that can simultaneously optimize the structural parameters and controller. The advantage of integrating the structural and controller optimization problems is that structure and controller interaction is taken into account in the design process and a more efficient overall design (lower control force/lighter weight) can be achieved, and also multidisciplinary design optimization can be performed. The down side is that the combined optimization problem is more difficult to formulate and solve, and computations are increased. This volume is a comprehensive treatment of dynamic analysis and control techniques in structural dynamic systems and the wide variety of issues and techniques that fall within this broad area, including the interactions between structural control systems and structural system parameters.

Book excerpt: It is well-known that the topic of composite mate- rials affects many engineering fields, such as civil, mechanical, aerospace, automotive and chemical. In the last decades, in fact, a huge number of scientific papers concerning these peculiar constituents has been published. Analogously, the industrial progress has been extremely noticeable. The study of composite materials, in general, is a challenging activity since the advancements both in the academia and in the industry provide continually new sparks to develop innovative ideas and applications. The communication, the sharing and the exchange of views can surely help the works of many researchers. This aspect represents the main purpose of this Conference, which aims to collect high-level contributions on the development and the application of composite materials. The establishment of this 21st edition of International Conference on Composite Structures has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the previous editions. ICCS wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures, sandwich panels, nanotechnology, bio-composites, delamination and fracture, experimental methods, manufacturing and other countless topics that have filled many sessions during this conference. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Bologna (Italy), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.

Book excerpt: AI!, in the earlier conferences (Tokyo, 1986; Atlanta, 1988, Melbourne, 1991; and Hong Kong, 1992) the response to the call for presentations at ICES-95 in Hawaii has been overwhelming. A very careful screening of the extended abstracts resulted in about 500 paper being accepted for presentation. Out of these, written versions of about 480 papers reached the conference secretariat in Atlanta in time for inclusion in these proceedings. The topics covered at ICES-95 range over the broadest spectrum of computational engineering science. The editors thank the international scientific committee, for their advice and encouragement in making ICES-95 a successful scientific event. Special thanks are expressed to the International Association for Boundary Elements Methods for hosting IABEM-95 in conjunction with ICES-95. The editors here express their deepest gratitude to Ms. Stacy Morgan for her careful handling of a myriad of details of ICES-95, often times under severe time constraints. The editors hope that the readers of this proceedings will find a kaleidoscopic view of computational engineering in the year 1995, as practiced in various parts of the world. Satya N. Book excerpt: This volume covers the proceedings ofthe ICASE/LaRC workshop on "Finite Element Theory and Application" held during July 28-30, 1986. The purpose of this workshop was to provide an update on the status of finite element theory, to assess the impactoftbis theory on practice, and to suggest directions for Cuture research. There were thirteen participants in the workshop. Some of them were leading mathematicians working on the finite element theory, and the rest expert practitioners in the areas of fluid dynamics and structural analysis. The first six articles in this volume provide a brief review of the theoretical and computational aspects of finite element methods (FEM). The remaining seven articles deal with a variety of applications highlighting the type of results that are possible, and indicating areas which deserve future research. The first article is by Temam. lt provides an introduction and overview of the general finite element methods for the nonspecialist. lt also illustrates the power of finite element methods with two specific applications-the free surface flowjstructure interaction problern and the compressible Euler solu tion to the flow past a finite aspect ratio flat plate at incidence. The second article by Brezzi is againan introduction and overview ofmixed finite element methods. lt includes a brief discussion of special techniques for solving the discrete problem, as weil as some applications to certain basic problems in elasticity and hydrodynamics.
