Download or read book Whole-Lake Applications of SonarTM for Selective Control of Eurasian Watermilfoil written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aquatic herbicide Sonar AS (fluridone) is being used in Northern tier states to selectively control the submersed exotic species Eurasian watermilfoil (Myrtophyllum spicatum L.) growing in lakes and reservoirs. Reliable quantitative information linking changes in the submersed plant community following fluridone applications is limited, particularly with respect to water residue records; therefore, a study was conducted to investigate the impact of low-dose fluridone treatments on the aquatic plant communities in eight lakes of southern Michigan The main objective of the study was to determine whether submersed plant species diversity and frequency were impacted by low-dose fluridone applications in the year of treatment, when targeting for Eurasian watermilfoil control. Secondary objectives included (a) determining fluridone effectiveness on the exotic submersed species curiyleafpondweed (Potamogeton cnspus L.), (b) evaluating shifts in plant species diversity at 1-year posttreatment, (c) measuring the effect of thermal stratification on water column distribution of fluridone residues, and (d) verifying laboratory-derived results of fluridone concentration and exposure time relationships with respect to efficacy against Eurasian watermilfoil.

Download or read book Use of Whole-Lake Fluridone Treatments to Selectively Control Eurasian Watermilfoil in Burr Pond and Lake Hortonia, Vermont written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One method of selectively managing the invasive submersed plant Myriophyllum spicatum L. (Eurasian watermilfoil) in northern lakes is to treat the entire water body with low doses (6 to 8 micrograms/L) of the herbicide fluridone (1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-(3-(trifluromethyl)- phenyl)-4(1H)-pyridinone). A 3-year study (1999-2001) was conducted at Burr Pond and Lake Hortonia, Vermont, to determine whether submersed plant diversity and frequency of occurrence were impacted by whole-lake, low-dose fluridone applications in the year of treatment, and beyond, when targeting for control of M. spicatum. Bathymetric maps of both lakes were developed using fathometers and global positioning system techniques in May 2000, which was matched with thermocline data (29 May 2000 - Lake Hortonia only) to determine the amount of herbicide required to achieve the target concentration (6 micrograms/L of fluridone) in each lake. On 4 June 2000, Burr Pond (34.5 ha; average depth, 4.4 m) and Lake Hortonia (195 ha; average depth, 5.8 m) were treated to achieve a nominal rate of 6 micrograms/L of fluridone using the aqueous suspension (AS) formulation Sonar(R) AS. Both lakes were subsequently treated with a booster application of Sonar AS on 9 July 2000, 35 days after the initial treatment to re-set the whole-lake concentration to 6 micrograms/L of fluridone. Water samples were collected at various locations on both lakes from immediately prior to application through 116 days after treatment (DAT), and were analyzed for fluridone using immunoassay.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations on the effectiveness, persistence and drift of 2,4-D(Aqua-Kleen) were reviewed following 33 treatments to controlEurasian water milfoil between 1976 and 1981. These experimentsindicated that in certain locations, 2,4-D was effective inremoving nuisance weed growth for up to three years followingtreatments. Legal considerations, procedures for application andmonitoring, and technical information on 2,4-D and othertreatment methods were reviewed to guide implementation of futuretreatment programs. The major advantage of herbicide use wasthat in some sites it could be applied relatively quickly, overlarge areas, at a low cost. The major limitation of herbicidetreatments was possible conflicts with water use. Followingexperimental treatments, concentrations of 2,4-D above thedrinking water standard (0.1 mg/L) persisted in the treated areafor a maximum of 4 to 6 days. Drift at this concentration wasdetected at a maximum of 125 m from open water treatments of 12ha or less in large lakes. Low concentration of herbicide (justabove 0.001 mg/L) were observed to drift up to 2 km and, typically, persisted for less than 40 days in treatment areas. It was unlikely that well water near treatment areas could becontaminated with 2,4-D, but the potential for hydrauliccontinuity between wells and treated water should be considered. No significant detrimental effects on non-target organisms wereobserved, although agencies responsible for wildlife resourcesshould be contacted about new treatment sites.

Book excerpt: Biology and Control of Aquatic Plants: A Best Management Practices Handbook is the fourth edition of a handbook produced by the not for profit Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Foundation (AERF). The mission of the AERF is to support research and development which provides strategies and techniques for the environmentally and scientifically sound management, conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. One way the Foundation accomplishes this mission is by producing this handbook to provide information to the public regarding the benefits of aquatic ecosystem conservation and aquatic plant management. The first, second and third editions of this handbook became some of the most widely consulted references in the aquatic plant management community. This fourth edition has been specifically designed with water resource managers, water management associations, homeowners and customers and operators of aquatic plant management companies and districts in mind. Our goal in preparing this handbook is to provide basic, scientifically sound information to assist decision-makers with their water management questions.
Book Synopsis Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems by : National Research Council
Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Synopsis A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species by : Robert A. Francis
Download or read book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species written by Robert A. Francis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

Book Synopsis Riparian Areas by : National Research Council
Download or read book Riparian Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.
