Book excerpt: "Research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults is growing as the chronic nature of its course and development is more understood. Those with ADHD tend to have deficits in executive functioning (EF), which particularly affects college students who experience academic and life challenges that rely on EF. Relatively little research exists documenting evidence-based treatments of ADHD for this population. Recent research suggests that internet-based interventions (IBI) can generally be beneficial for young adults, but more work is needed to support this claim with regards to ADHD, in particular. The current study examines an IBI adaptation of a recently developed intervention for college students with ADHD that focuses on organizational, time management, and planning (OTMP) skills in a group format. Students with ADHD at three universities (n = 38; 65.8% biologically female; M age 23.64; 78.9% White; 94.7% Not Hispanic or Latino) completed a battery of self-report measures of ADHD symptoms, impairment, and OTMP skills pre- and post-treatment. Most participants reported a previous ADHD diagnosis (n = 28) and all others reported at least five symptoms of inattentive symptoms at pre-treatment (M for all participants = 6.55). The manualized intervention consisted of six group and three individual sessions. Pre-post differences in symptom severity and functional impairment due to ADHD-related symptoms suggest that the intervention has a positive effect, and students endorsed generally high satisfaction with many aspects of their treatment experience. Overall, one-tailed, paired t-tests comparing pre- and post-treatment scores indicated significant improvements in inattentive (IA) and hyperactive- impulsive (Hyp/Imp) ADHD symptoms, family-, school-, life skills-, and self-concept-related impairment, impairment related to self-management to time, self-motivation, and emotional self- regulation, and use of OTMP skills. Additionally, participants generally reported satisfaction with the IBI-adapted intervention. In sum, results suggest that the online adaptation of this intervention had promise to be efficacious; more extensive study of the intervention is needed."--Abstract.

Effective interventions for ADHD among college students are urgently needed; however, very few studies and no randomized controlled trials have been published evaluating the efficacy of treatments for ADHD among college students. The present study is a pilot randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy, acceptability, and feasibility of a group-based dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training intervention for college students with ADHD.Thirty-three undergraduate students with ADHD were randomized to receive either group skills training or self-guided skills handouts during an 8-week intervention phase. Participants were 42% female, 58% white, with an average age of 21.3 years (range 18-24). ADHD symptoms, executive functioning, and several related outcomes were assessed via self-report and neuropsychological testing. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to analyze primary outcome measures at baseline, post-treatment, and 3-month follow-up. Participants receiving group skills training showed greater improvement in executive functioning and quality of life, with a trend toward greater improvement in ADHD symptoms and sustained attention. Treatment response rates were approximately 60% vs. 25% and clinical recovery rates were approximately 55% vs. 20% in the group skills training and handouts conditions, respectively. Acceptability and feasibility of group skills training were high. Group DBT skills training may be efficacious, acceptable, and feasible for treating ADHD among college students. A large-scale randomized trial is needed to further evaluate this intervention.

Objective: Across two studies, we examined: (a) the feasibility of a proposed IBI for ADHD and participant perceptions regarding treatment acceptability and credibility, outcome expectancy, and intention to initiate treatment; and (b) whether algorithmically tailoring proposed treatment content based on self-reported functional impairment increases positive perceptions of an IBI for ADHD. Method: Across both studies, participants were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and provided with a descriptive preview of a proposed IBI and explanatory outlines of treatment module content. Participants were randomly assigned to either a tailored (i.e., received module outlines tailored to their specific deficits), control (i.e., non-tailored; received all module outlines), or random condition (i.e., received a varying number of module outlines). Participants in Experiment 1 were emerging adult college students (N = 196; aged 18-25) with current ADHD symptomatology. Participation in Experiment 2 was not limited to students specifically; instead the sample consisted of adults (N = 235; aged 18-35) with a prior ADHD diagnosis as well as current ADHD symptomatology and related impairment. Results: Analyses demonstrated that participants in the tailored and control conditions had moderate IBI acceptability ratings. Treatment preference was inconsistent across experiments: students in Experiment 1 preferred face-to-face (F2F) treatment, adults in Experiment 2 preferred IBIs, and among a subsample of only students in Experiment 2 there was no difference in preference. Most individuals who preferred F2F treatment also considered an IBI to be an acceptable method of treatment. Across both experiments, most individuals who preferred an IBI also preferred a guided over unguided IBI. Further, students in 2 the tailored condition reported higher IBI acceptability than those in the control condition (Experiment 1). Although the remaining outcomes of interest did not significantly differ between the tailored and control condition, the data showed small effects for several of these outcomes (i.e., treatment credibility and relevance). Conclusion: This research was the first to examine (a) factors related to an IBI for ADHD in college students, and (b) the effect of algorithmically tailoring content within the populations of both experiments. Lack of significant mean differences between the tailored and control conditions on several of the main outcomes of interest suggest that implementation of either method of treatment could prove effective. However, estimates of effect size suggest that our samples may have been underpowered. Further results, implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

This study examined the acceptability and efficacy of a coaching intervention for college students with ADHD and investigated whether anxiety moderated the relationship between treatment status and psychoeducational outcomes. Twenty students were randomly assigned to an ADHD coaching treatment condition (n = 10) or a control condition (n = 10). Students who received the coaching treatment were significantly more satisfied and found the procedures significantly more acceptable compared to students in the control condition. The effects of coaching on psychoeducational outcomes over time were inconclusive, but trended in the anticipated direction with effect sizes in the small to moderate range. The results of simple moderation analyses indicated that student anxiety explains a small portion of the variance in student outcomes, with trends consistently suggesting that coaching was most impactful for college students with low anxiety. Implications of these findings are discussed along with suggestions for future research.

Unfortunately, there are few proven mental health treatments for college students with ADHD, and little is known about what works for whom. The present study examined the acceptability and efficacy of ADHD coaching for college students and examined the moderating impact of anxiety on psychoeducational outcomes. Fifty-nine students were randomly assigned to ADHD coaching (n = 30) or a control condition (n = 29). Consistent with previous research, students were significantly more satisfied with ADHD coaching and rated the intervention as significantly more acceptable than students in the control condition. The main effect of ADHD coaching was inconclusive, but a small positive effect on grade point average (GPA) was noted. Results from simple moderation analyses were similarly inconclusive, but trends tentatively suggest that high levels of anxiety may be a risk factor for self-reported psychoeducational outcomes but also may confer treatment benefit for academic outcomes. Recruiting large samples of college students representing a wide range of trait anxiety appears necessary to examine the impact of comorbid anxiety on psychoeducational outcomes.

Participants included undergraduates registered in psychology courses who enrolled in research studies in exchange for course credit, with a final sample of 25 in the intervention condition and 16 in the control condition. Both groups completed the same set of pre- and post-measures, but only those in the intervention condition attended 3 weekly group meetings on improving their organization. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated by comparing pre- and post-measurements of academic impairment, inattention and hyperactivity symptoms, utilization of OTMP skills, and time management abilities. Participants enrolled in the OTMP intervention improved significantly more on ratings of inattention, hyperactivity, and academic impairment, relative to the control condition. However, the degree of improvement in OTMP skills utilization and time management abilities were not significantly different between the two conditions. While preliminary, the data suggests that an OTMP skills group intervention can be effective in ameliorating inattention, hyperactivity, and academic impairment among college students. Limitations and future directions for future research are discussed.

Though cognitively capable, many college students with ADHD fail to thrive academically and are at risk of academic underperformance, probation, and dropping out. Disability offices provide accommodations and assistance in many areas; however, even the most comprehensive services cannot assist students when they are required to regulate attention during independent academic tasks. Self-monitoring of attention (SMA) interventions have successfully improved attentive behaviors in secondary students but have not been widely used or developed for college students. This study evaluated the efficacy of a self-monitoring of attention intervention (Focus Check) delivered via smartphone app on the attention, effortful control, and academic self-efficacy of college students with self-defined attention difficulties. This mixed-methods study used a randomized experimental design with experience sampling survey and social validity survey complements. Measures of the Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale (BAARS-IV), Mind-Wandering Scale, Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, and Adult Temperament Questionnaire were taken at pre-test, after the initial two-week experimental period, and at the conclusion of the four-week experiment. The control group, (n = 21) and the experimental group, (n = 27) were comprised primarily of female undergraduate students. No statistically significant differences were found between groups on pre-test measures. Results of multiple measure ANOVA's found statistically significant results between the experimental and control groups on measures of BAARS-IV: Inattention subscale, and BAARS-IV: Sluggish Cognitive Tempo subscale suggesting that the SMA intervention contributed to reducing scores on these measures. Additional significant results were found for the smaller subsample of participants with likely ADHD (n = 15) on measures of Mind-Wandering and Academic Self-Efficacy. Furthermore, additional statistically significant findings from pre-test to post-test were found for both the experimental and control groups on measures of the BAARS-IV, Mind-Wandering, and Effortful Control: Effortful Attention, suggesting that participation in this study resulted in improved scores on these measures. Experience sampling and social validity survey results show that participants enjoyed using Focus Check and found it to be helpful in regulating attention during independent academic tasks. Participation in the study involved strategy use and purposeful reflection on patterns of attention, as well as use of the Focus Check SMA Intervention. The significant findings for the group as a whole combined with the promising preliminary findings on the SMA intervention open the door for research on several self-regulation interventions for college students, particularly those with impairing levels of ADHD symptomology. Should future research confirm the exploratory findings found here, Focus Check, or similar SMA interventions, could provide college students with a reliable, cost-effective, and self-administered means of regulating variable attention during independent academic tasks.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
