Book excerpt: LES OXYDES MODELES DE BASSE DIMENSION, COMME LES COMPOSES DE SPINS 1/2 CUGEO 3, SRCU 2(BO 3) 2 OU NAV 2O 5, SOULEVENT DE NOMBREUSES QUESTIONS SUR LA NATURE DE L'ANTIFERROMAGNETISME DE LA PHASE BASSE-TEMPERATURE, DESORDONNE PAR LES FLUCTUATIONS QUANTIQUES. CETTE THESE PORTE SUR LA DESCRIPTION THEORIQUE DES PROPRIETES MAGNETIQUES DE CES COMPOSES, EN LIEN AVEC LES NOMBREUX RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX. EN PARTICULIER, DES RESULTATS INATTENDUS ONT ETE OBSERVES DANS DEUX EXPERIENCES ORIGINALES : EFFET DE ROTATION DE LA POLARISATION DANS UNE EXPERIENCE DE DIFFUSION INELASTIQUE DE NEUTRONS ET TRANSITIONS OPTIQUES INTERDITES. POUR EXPLIQUER CES EFFETS, NOUS AVONS ETE AMENES A CONSIDERER DES INTERACTIONS ANISOTROPES ENTRE SPINS COMME L'INTERACTION DE DZYALOSHINSKI-MORIYA. NOUS AVONS ETUDIE LES EFFETS DE CETTE INTERACTION DANS LES SYSTEMES QUANTIQUES SANS ORDRE MAGNETIQUE ET EXPLIQUE LA STRUCTURE FINE DE L'EXCITATION TRIPLET OBSERVEE DANS SRCU 2(BO 3) 2. L'EFFET DE ROTATION DE POLARISATION PERMET D'ETUDIER LES INTERFERENCES ENTRE EXCITATIONS MAGNETIQUES ET PHONONS ET EST INTIMEMENT LIE A LA PRESENCE D'ANISOTROPIE. NOUS AVONS ETABLI LES REGLES DE SELECTION DANS LE CADRE D'UNE THEORIE PERTURBATIVE DANS LE COUPLAGE SPIN-PHONON ET COMPARE AVEC LES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX. DE MEME, NOUS AVONS ETUDIE LES REGLES DE SELECTION DES TRANSITIONS OPTIQUES, EN EXAMINANT NON SEULEMENT L'EFFET DE L'OPERATEUR DIPOLAIRE MAGNETIQUE, MAIS AUSSI CELUI DE L'OPERATEUR DIPOLAIRE ELECTRIQUE EN GENERALISANT LA THEORIE DE FLEURY-LOUDON. L'ORDRE DE GRANDEUR DE L'INTERACTION DE DZYALOSHINSKI-MORIYA - STATIQUE ET DYNAMIQUE - A ETE RECONSIDERE POUR LA GEOMETRIE DE CES COMPOSES SUR LA BASE DE LA THEORIE DU SUPERECHANGE. NOUS AVONS MONTRE QU'ELLE POUVAIT DEVENIR, DE FACON ETONNANTE A PRIORI, PLUS GRANDE QUE L'ECHANGE PRINCIPAL.

Book excerpt: A sound understanding of magnetism, transport theory, spin relaxation mechanisms, and magnetization dynamics is necessary to engage in spintronics research. In this primer, special effort has been made to give straightforward explanations for these advanced concepts. This book will be a valuable resource for graduate students in spintronics and related fields. Concepts of magnetism such as exchange interaction, spin-orbit coupling, spin canting, and magnetic anisotropy are introduced. Spin-dependent transport is described using both thermodynamics and Boltzmann’s equation, including Berry curvature corrections. Spin relaxation phenomenology is accounted for with master equations for quantum spin systems coupled to a bath. Magnetic resonance principles are applied to describe spin waves in ferromagnets, cavity-mode coupling in antiferromagnets, and coherence phenomena relevant to spin qubits applications. Key Features: • A pedagogical approach to foundational concepts in spintronics with simple models that can be calculated to enhance understanding. • Nineteen chapters, each beginning with a historical perspective and ending with an outlook on current research. • 1200 references, ranging from landmark papers to frontline publications. Jean-Philippe Ansermet is Professor Emeritus at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he pioneered experiments on giant magnetoresistance, current-induced magnetization switching, heat-driven spin torque, and nuclear magnetic resonance. He taught mechanics, thermodynamics, and spin dynamics for more than twenty years. A fellow of the American Physical Society and recipient of the 2022 Credit Suisse Teaching Award, he was an executive board member of the European Physical Society, president of the Swiss Physical Society, and teaching director at EPFL. He has authored or co-authored textbooks on mechanics and thermodynamics and published more than two hundred articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the rapidly developing field of oxide thin-films and heterostructures. Oxide materials combined with atomic-scale precision in a heterostructure exhibit an abundance of macroscopic physical properties involving the strong coupling between the electronic, spin, and structural degrees of freedom, and the interplay between magnetism, ferroelectricity, and conductivity. Recent advances in thin-film deposition and characterization techniques made possible the experimental realization of such oxide heterostructures, promising novel functionalities and device concepts. The book consists of chapters on some of the key innovations in the field over recent years, including strongly correlated oxide heterostructures, magnetoelectric coupling and multiferroic materials, thermoelectric phenomena, and two-dimensional electron gases at oxide interfaces. The book covers the core principles, describes experimental approaches to fabricate and characterize oxide heterostructures, demonstrates new functional properties of these materials, and provides an overview of novel applications.

Book excerpt: This book is primarily an introduction to the vast family of ceramic materials. The first part is devoted to the basics of ceramics and processes: raw materials, powders synthesis, shaping and sintering. It discusses traditional ceramics as well as “technical” ceramics – both oxide and non-oxide – which have multiple developments. The second part focuses on properties and applications, and discusses both structural and functional ceramics, including bioceramics. The fields of abrasion, cutting and tribology illustrate the importance of mechanical properties. It also deals with the questions/answers of a ceramicist regarding electronuclear technology. As chemistry is an essential discipline for ceramicists, the book shows, in particular, what soft chemistry can contribute as a result of sol-gel methods.

Book excerpt: Understanding, controlling and, more importantly, enhancing the interaction between light (photons) and spin waves (magnons) can be, among others, a step towards the realization of magnon-mediated microwave-to-optical transducers for quantum computing applications or hybrid solid-state spintronic-photonic interconnections. In this respect, the development of novel composite multifunctional micro/nanostructures — so-called optomagnonic — which simultaneously control optical and spin waves and enhance their interaction, is particularly attractive. This book constitutes a collective work, comprising seven chapters from leading researchers in the field of optomagnonics and related areas. Apart from exciting recent developments, it provides the necessary fundamental knowledge in an explanatory manner and, therefore, it is accessible to non-experts. It is suitable for PhD students, post-docs, and researchers who are willing to get engaged in optomagnonics, while selected parts could also serve as lecture material for advanced courses. With increasing demand for miniaturized optomagnonic devices, this book will be an important resource to researchers working on optomagnonics, magneto-optics, spintronics, as well as on hybrid micro/nano devices for information processing.

(Interactions of soil minerals with organic components and microorganisms) (WGMO) of the International Soil Science Society (ISSS) was founded in 1990 at the 14th World Congress of Soil Science (Kyoto, Japan), with Professor P.M. Huang being the Chairman. Since then, the Working Group M.O. has served as a forum to bring together soil chemists, soil mineralogists, soil microbiologists, soil biochemists, soil physi cists and environmental, ecological, and health scientists. The objective of the Working Group M.O. is to promote research, teaching, and also the exchange of technology concerning the knowledge and the impact of the interactions between minerals-organics and microorganisms on environmental quality, agricultural sustainability, and ecosystem "health". This group is first a scientific group as defined just previously, but it also intends to develop exchange and transfer between scientists and engineers. The first International Meeting organized by Professor P. M. Huang, was held in Edmonton, Canada, in August 1992, where 87 papers were presented by scientists from 20 countries. Following this meeting, a two volume book was edited by P. M. Huang, J. Berthelin, J.-M. Bollag, W. B. McGill, and A. L. Page, entitled "Environmental impact of soil component interaction" : Volume I "Natural and anthropogenic organic-volume II "Metals, other inorganic and microbial activities", and published by c.R.C. Lewis Pub lishers (1995).
