Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel to determine the effects of wing and horizontal-tail vertical location on the aerodynamic characteristics in sideslip at various angles of attack for a supersonic airplane configuration at Mach numbers of 1.41 and 2.01. The basic model was equipped with a wing and horizontal tail, each having 45 degree sweep and an aspect ratio of 4. The wing had a taper ratio of 0.2 and NACA 65A004 sections; the horizontal tail had a taper ratio of 0.4 and NACA 65A006 sections.

Knechtel and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of wing-tip droop on the longitudinal stability characteristics of a 53 and a 63 degree sweptback wing-body combination. Both models were tested with flat and abruptly drooped wing tips. The 63 degree wing was also tested with a curved drooped tip. In addition, the combined effects of wing fences and extended leading-edge flaps were investigated. The results showed that abrupt droop of the outer 40 percent of the basic 53 degree wing improved the stability characteristics of the model. For the 63 degree swept wing, curved droop caused slight beneficial effects on the stability, whereas abrupt droop caused adverse effects. In general, the most favorable stability characteristics were obtained for either flat or abruptly drooped wings with fences and extended leading-edge flaps.

Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the influence of wing aspect ratio and tail location on the effects of compressibility upon static longitudinal stability. The investigation showed that the use of reduced wing aspect ratios or short tail lengths leads to serious reductions in high-speed stability and the possibility of high-speed instability.

Book excerpt: An investigation was made in the Langley 300 MPH 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the static stability characteristics of a cambered-delta-wing model. The cambered delta wing was derived from a segment of a cone selected so that the projected plan form with a wing dihedral angle of zero degrees was the same as a 60 degree delta wing. The projected plan form had an aspect ratio of 2.31.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the effects of several wing leading-edge modifications on the aerodynamic characteristics of a 45 degree swept-wing fighter-airplane model has been conducted in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel at low and high lifting conditions at Mach numbers from 0.85 to 1.03. The investigation included the determination of the effect on longitudinal stability and performance characteristics of wing leading-edge and chord-extension droops of 6 and 20 degrees, chord-extension overhangs of 0.075c and 0.15c (where c is the wing chord), leading-edge notches cut out at the inboard end of the 0.075c chord-extension to depths of 0.075c and 0.125c, and indentation of the model fuselage to conform partially to the supersonic area rule for a Mach number of 1.20. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data were obtained for configurations with the tail on and off. Comparisons of data obtained from the present model with data from a configuration with leading-edge slats are included.

Book excerpt: Summary: The effects of negative dihedral on lateral stability and control characteristics at high lift coefficients have been determined by flight tests of a model in the Langley free-flight tunnel. The geometric dihedral angle of the model wing was varied from 0° to -20° and the vertical-tail area, from 0 to 35 percent of the wing area. The model was flown with various combinations of dihedral angle and vertical-tail area at lift coefficients of 1.0, 1.4, and 1.8. As the effective dihedral was decreased from 0° to -15°, the model became increasingly difficult to fly. With an effective dihedral of -15° the flying characteristics were considered to be dangerous because, when there was only a slight lag in the application of corrective control following a disturbance, the unstable moments resulting from spiral instability became sufficiently large to overpower the moments of the controls so that return to straight flight was impossible. Inasmuch as full-scale airplanes because of their greater size will diverge at a slower rate than free-flight models, the amount of negative effective dihedral that would constitute a dangerous condition is expected to be greater for full-scale airplanes.

Book excerpt: Contains wind-tunnel results of an investigation made in the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effects of vertical-tail area and length on the low-speed yawing derivatives of a midwing airplane model having a 45 degree sweptback wing and tail surfaces. Comparisons of the measured contributions with those calculated by currently available procedures are also presented. The interference between the various model components is discussed.
