Book excerpt: Response latency was studied as a measure of associative strength or degree of learning and as a possible basis for instructional decision-making in computer-assisted instruction. Latency was investigated in a paired-associate task as a function of training procedure (a comparison of the anticipation and recall paradigms) and information transmission requirements (a comparison of two, four, and eight response alternatives to an eight item stimulus list) during both acquisition and overlearning. The magnitude and variability of latency measurements were independent of training method during acquisition, but both were reduced by the recall paradigm during overlearning. Latency was an increasing function of the number of response alternatives during both acquisition and overlearning. During acquisition, prior to the trial of last error (TLE) for each item, latency remained relatively constant and did not differ between correct and incorrect responses. There was a substantial drop in latency following the TLE. Both pre- and post-TLE latencies were an increasing function of intresubject differences in item difficulty. Pre-TLE latencies were an inverse function of subject learning rate. Post-TLE latencies were independent of subject learning rate. The latency of the first correct response to an item was found to be shorter if there were no subsequent errors on that item. In general, the study suggests that latency, at least in a rote verbal learning task, may be a sensitive measure of strength of learning during the overlearning phase, but not during initial learning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning of paired-associate items was studied in relation to different repetitive sequences of reinforced (R) trials and test (T) trials. One purpose was to obtain evidence as to whether either learning or forgetting occurs on unreinforced T trials; a second was to adduce principles bearing on the problem of optimal programming of R and T trials. The four training conditions were: (1) R T R T ... ; (2) R R T R R T ... ; (3) R T T R T T ... ; (4) R R T T R R T T ... Five items were assigned to each condition and the sequences were repeated till a criterion of learning was reached. Two groups of 50 subjects were run; one with nonsense syllable-number pairs and one with nonsense syllable-word pairs. Performance on tests given successively without intervening reinforcement showed no significant change in correct response probability--suggesting that neither learning nor forgetting occurred on T trials per se. The course of learning was, however, affected to a major extent by the ratio of Ts to Rs and by their arrangement in the various repetitive sequences. Learning curves plotted in terms of error proportion on the first T following the n(th) R trial lined up in the order: Condition 3 (lowest), 1, 4, 2. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Order affects the results you get: Different orders of presenting material can lead to qualitatively and quantitatively different learning outcomes. These differences occur in both natural and artificial learning systems. In Order to Learn shows how order effects are crucial in human learning, instructional design, machine learning, and both symbolic and connectionist cognitive models. Each chapter explains a different aspect of how the order in which material is presented can strongly influence what is learned by humans and theoretical models of learning in a variety of domains. In addition to data, models are provided that predict and describe order effects and analyze how and when they will occur. The introductory and concluding chapters compile suggestions for improving learning through better sequences of learning materials, including how to take advantage of order effects that encourage learning and how to avoid order effects that discourage learning. Each chapter also highlights questions that may inspire further research. Taken together, these chapters show how order effects in different areas can and do inform each other. In Order to Learn will be of interest to researchers and students in cognitive science, education, machine learning.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissertation reports a study of short-term retention in paired-associate list learning. One purpose of the study was to ascertain empirically the extent to which short-term memory influences performance during the acquisition of a list of paired associates; a second was to gather evidence with respect to the conceptual relationship of short-term memory and learning. The particular experimental behavior chosen for study was the learning of a list of paired associates by means of a series of anticipation trials. An anticipation trial starts with the presentation of a stimulus to which the subject attempts to anticipate the correct response and ends with a presentation of the correct response. During an experimental session, the trials on any one item (presentation sequence) are characterized by a sequence of interpresentation intervals; that is, any two successive presentations of an item are separated by some number of trials on other items. The experimental design modified the standard anticipation procedure in two ways. (1) The series of trials was generated by a computer-implemented algorithm designed to yield a uniform distribution of interpresentation intervals. (2) All subjects had the same series of trials in the sense that each had the same set of presentation sequences. The confounding of item differences with the effects of the presentation sequences was avoided by counterbalancing across subjects the assignment of items to presentation sequences. (Author).

Book excerpt: Two procedures were investigated in an attempt to decrease the variability of overlearning response latencies in a study-test paradigm, paired-associate task matching CVC's with response keys: (a) self-pacing the task by presenting test-trial stimuli whenever the subject pressed a 'home' key, and (b) instructing and shaping subjects to keep the home key depressed until they selected a response key and measuring the period of home-key depression as the latency of response onset. Book excerpt: The investigation was an attempt to find learning materials for which the simultaneous presentation technique would be inferior to other techniques. Subjects learned a 40-item list of paired-associates under one of four training conditions. The stimulus terms were the names of electronic circuits, the response terms, schematic diagrams of electronic circuits. Half the items had distractors that were very similar to the correct response term, the remaining half, distractors that were less similar. Half the items in each of these groups had distractors that were the correct response terms for other items in the list. The remaining items had distractors that were unique to a given item. The overall differences between training techniques were not large, but there was some indication that the Five Alternative Prompt condition was inferior to the remaining conditions. Interactions were found between training conditions and item types, but again the differences involved were not large. Separate comparisons on the various item types indicated that in no case was the One Alternative Prompt condition reliably inferior to any of the remaining conditions. (Author).
