Download or read book NASA/SDIO Space Environmental Effects on Materials Workshop, Part 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) cosponsored a workshop on Space Environmental Effects on Materials at the NASA Langley Research Center from June 28 to July 1, 1988. The joint workshop was designed to inform participants of the present state of knowledge regarding space environmental effects on materials and to identify knowledge gaps that prevent informed decisions on the best use of advanced materials in space for long-duration NASA and SDIO missions. Establishing priorities for future ground-based and space-based materials research was a major goal of the workshop. The end product of the workshop was an assessment of the current state-of-the-art in space environmental effects on materials in order to develop a national plan for spaceflight experiments. The workshop was intended for participation by expert applied researchers, systems technologists, and program managers for spacecraft systems.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Environmental Degradation of Materials by : Myer Kutz
Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Degradation of Materials written by Myer Kutz and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Environmental Degradation of Materials, Third Edition, explains how to measure, analyze and control environmental degradation for a wide range of industrial materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics, concrete, wood and textiles exposed to environmental factors, such as weather, seawater, and fire. This updated edition divides the material into four new sections, Analysis and Testing, Types of Degradation, Protective Measures and Surface Engineering, then concluding with Case Studies. New chapters include topics on Hydrogen Permeation and Hydrogen Induced Cracking, Weathering of Plastics, the Environmental Degradation of Ceramics and Advanced Materials, Antimicrobial Layers, Coatings, and the Corrosion of Pipes in Drinking Water Systems. Expert contributors to this book provide a wealth of insider knowledge and engineering expertise that complements their explanations and advice. Case Studies from areas such as pipelines, tankers, packaging and chemical processing equipment ensure that the reader understands the practical measures that can be put in place to save money, lives and the environment. - Introduces the reader to the effects of environmental degradation on a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, concrete, wood and textiles - Describes the kind of degradation that effects each material and how best to protect it - Includes case studies that show how organizations, from small consulting firms, to corporate giants design and manufacture products that are more resistant to environmental effects

Book Synopsis High Temperature and Environmental Effects on Polymeric Composites by : Charles E. Harris
Download or read book High Temperature and Environmental Effects on Polymeric Composites written by Charles E. Harris and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1993 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace and naval applications of polymers in conditions once thought too harsh for them, take center stage in the survey of how polymer composites react to environmental conditions. A dozen papers from a symposium in San Diego, October 1991, describe damage mechanisms and failure, materials behavior under combined effects, and constitutive models, sometimes considering polymers as a whole, but more often specific groups or composites. Book Synopsis Successful Composites Technology Transfer by : George N. Bullen
Download or read book Successful Composites Technology Transfer written by George N. Bullen and published by Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ingenuity and visibility of NASA space programs, such as the max launch abort system (MLAs), are sparking the creativity, knowledge transfer, and unique applications of revolutionary technologies in areas such as aerospace, wind energy, transportation, oil, safety, and civil infrastructure. Lightweight, high-strength, carbon-fiber composites materials, vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding, smart sensors, out-of-autoclave curing of autoclave composites, unified structures, structural health monitoring systems, smart phone/RFID tracking, determinant assembly, forensic engineering, and the digital tapestry that ties everything together are just a few of the technological advances perfected in NASA’s programs. Successful composites technology transfer takes the discussion of these technologies to the next level — addressing the advantages and challenges to their more widespread industrial application. Readers will get insight into how high-strength, carbon-fiber composites and its related technologies are making inroads into products such as commercial airplane seats and carts, turbine blades, firefighting equipment, trucks, buses, lifting and support devices, and containers. The author shares breakthrough thinking on other potential applications, such as a new lighter than air ship, prototype vehicles, driver health and safety, firefighter safety, and bridge infrastructure safety and health monitoring. According to Foreword author, Tim Shinbara, vice president of manufacturing technology at AMT (Association for Manufacturing Technology), “...it is of considerable value to search out, discover, and digest resources such as this book in an effort to continually improve the lens by which we innovate.” Aside from new product innovations, extension of the manufacturing technologies, and processes described herein have the potential to not only add new functionality or modify the existing functionality of existing products and systems, but in many cases, adoption would require minimal effort from the manufacturing enterprise.
