Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised, expanded and updated edition of the successful text, Onions and Other Vegetable Alliums, relates the production and utilization of these familiar and important vegetable crops to the many aspects of plant science underpinning their production and storage technologies. Chapters cover species and crop types, plant structure, genetics and breeding, physiology of growth and development as well as pests and diseases, production agronomy, storage after harvest and the biochemistry of flavour, storage carbohydrates and colour and how this relates to nutritional and health benefits. From this wide perspective it is possible to see many examples where underlying scientific knowledge illuminates, explains and can improve agronomic practice. The reader will get an insight into how molecular methods are revolutionizing the study of taxonomy, genetics, pathology and physiology and how these methods are being applied in the breeding of improved crops.

Download or read book Onions and Allied Crops written by James L. Brewster and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990, Onions and Allied Crops, is a comprehensive account of the edible allium, examined across three volumes. The collection examines the major economic and dietary importance of edible alliums in most countries, and brings together contributions from experts across multiple disciplines, including food scientists, economists, agriculturalists and biochemists. These books address selection and breeding of locally adapted cultivars and the development of cultural techniques, allowing for cultivation across the tropics, to the sub-arctic regions. As such the collection examines the allium as a major agricultural asset and the impact this has had on many economies. These volumes will be of use and of interest to food scientists, economists, agriculturalists and biochemists alike.

Book Synopsis Post Harvest Physiology and Storage of Onion by : Dr. Laxman Kukanoor
Download or read book Post Harvest Physiology and Storage of Onion written by Dr. Laxman Kukanoor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Onion is one of the most important commercial vegetable crop grown in India and believed to be originated in Central Asia. Onion is a seasonal crop and has comparatively low storage ability and bulbs are usually stored until the harvest of next season crop or for longer period due to seasonal glut in the market. Significant losses in quality and quantity of onion occur during storage. Storage of onion bulbs has, therefore, become a serious problem in the tropical countries. Pre-harvest application of MH @ 2500 ppm and carbendazim @ 1000 ppm + MH @ 2500 ppm 15 days prior to harvest resulted in minimum PLW, sprouting, maximum total sugars, dry matter content, marketable bulbs. The onion bulbs cured under 50 per cent shade (15 days)+ tops removed 15 days after harvest and sulphur fumigation for five minutes resulted in minimum PLW, sprouting, rotting, and maximum total sugar and dry matter contents. The bulbs stored under ZECC showed minimum PLW while, minimum sprouting, rotting and maximum total sugar and dry matter contents were recorded when the bulbs stored in low cost structure with maximum per cent of marketable bulbs which were on par with the improved storage structure.
Book Synopsis Crop Post-Harvest: Science and Technology, Volume 3 by : Debbie Rees
Download or read book Crop Post-Harvest: Science and Technology, Volume 3 written by Debbie Rees and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade in high value perishables has grown enormously in the past few decades. In the developed world consumers now expect to be able to eat perishable produce from all parts of the world, and in most cases throughout the year. Perishable plant products are, however, susceptible to physical damage and often have a potential storage life of only a few days. Given their key importance in the world economy, Crop Post-Harvest Science and Technology: Perishables devotes itself to perishable produce, providing current and comprehensive knowledge on all the key factors affecting post-harvest quality of fruits and vegetables. This volume focuses explicitly on the effects and causes of deterioration, as well as the many techniques and practices implemented to maintain quality though correct handling and storage. As highlighted throughout, regular losses caused by post-harvest spoilage of perishable products can be as much as 50%. A complete understanding, as provided by this excellent volume, is therefore vital in helping to reduce these losses by a significant percentage. Compiled by members of the world-renowned Natural Resources Institute at the United Kingdom's University of Greenwich, with contributions from experts around the world, this volume is an essential reference for all those working in the area. Researchers and upper-level students in food science, food technology, post-harvest science and technology, crop protection, applied biology and plant and agricultural sciences will benefit from this landmark publication. Libraries in all research establishments and universities where these subjects are studied and taught should ensure that they have several copies for their shelves.
