Book Synopsis Effect of Residual Stress on Brittle Fracture Testing by : MR. Hill

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stress present in coupons used for fracture testing will influence the experimental determination of fracture toughness. Triaxial residual stress (e.g., due to welding) can alter both the driving force for fracture and the crack-tip constraint at a specified load, so that the apparent toughness of a coupon depends on the residual stress present. In this paper, we employ a micromechanical failure theory (the RKR model) to predict brittle fracture loads for three-point bend samples with and without triaxial residual stress. Finite element modeling is used in the study to introduce an idealized welding residual stress field, to simulate the crushing of the coupon by circular platens (referred to as homogenization or local compression), and to simulate three-point bend testing. Results show that the residual stress markedly changes load at fracture, which would be used to compute apparent fracture toughness. Furthermore, the method of superposition commonly used is not able to accurately predict this effect.
Book Synopsis Evaluation of Residual Stress Effects on Brittle Fracture Strength Based on Weibull Stress Criterion by : Yoichi Yamashita
Download or read book Evaluation of Residual Stress Effects on Brittle Fracture Strength Based on Weibull Stress Criterion written by Yoichi Yamashita and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the method for estimating the residual stress effects on brittle fracture of structural steel based on the Weibull stress criterion. First, brittle fracture tests were conducted for four-point bend notched specimens with and without compressive preloading. It is shown that the compressive preloading apparently decreases the critical crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). The critical CTOD of the preloaded specimen can be predicted from monotonically loaded test results based on the Weibull stress criterion. It has been found that the Weibull stress is an effective fracture parameter for brittle fracture initiation under tensile residual stress. Second, using wide plate specimens with and without welding residual stress subjected to uniform tension and three-point bend fracture toughness specimens, welding residual stresses effect on the brittle fracture strength is investigated. Experiments show that the critical CTOD of wide plate with welding residual stress is significantly smaller than that without residual stress. Constraint loss effect on CTOD of wide plate can be assessed by the equivalent CTOD ratio ?. ? is defined as ?=?3PB/?WP, where ?3PB and ?WP are CTODs of the standard fracture toughness specimen and wide plate, respectively, at the same level of the Weibull stress. Fracture assessment result using ? is shown within the context of failure assessment diagram. An excessive conservatism observed in the conventional procedure (?=1) is reasonably reduced by applying the equivalent CTOD ratio ?.
Book Synopsis Prediction of Residual Stress Effects on Fracture Instability Using the Local Approach by : Y. Yamashita
Download or read book Prediction of Residual Stress Effects on Fracture Instability Using the Local Approach written by Y. Yamashita and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of residual stresses induced in a three-point bend CTOD specimen on brittle fracture initiation are studied on the basis of the Local Approach. Compressive residual stresses are produced near the crack tip by preloading at room temperature. The material used is a 780 MPa class high-strength steel. Fracture tests are conducted at low temperatures (-75 and -40°C) after preloading. The preloading apparently increases the fracture load and critical CTOD levels at the onset of brittle fracture from the reference levels at monotonic loading, which is due to the compressive residual stress field around the crack tip. The present study employs the Weibull stress fracture criterion to evaluate the brittle fracture resistance of the preloaded specimen. The Weibull stress is calculated by a 3D elastic-plastic FE analysis. Under the assumption that the critical Weibull stress at brittle fracture initiation is a material property independent of preloading, the critical CTOD of the preloaded specimens can be predicted from the fracture test results of monotonically loaded specimens.

Book Synopsis Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue and Fracture Testing and Incorporation of Results Into Design by : Michael R. Mitchell
Download or read book Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue and Fracture Testing and Incorporation of Results Into Design written by Michael R. Mitchell and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eleven peer-reviewed papers, written by experts in their field, provide an understanding of residual stresses, fatigue crack growth, fatigue lifetime predictions, and their effect on structural integrity. Residual stresses can be present due to processing and manufacturing of materials and structures, so it is imperative to understand how and why they can influence the test data that we used in structural design methodologies. Residual stresses may also be intentionally engineered into structures in attempts to improve fatigue life, and it is equally important that designers understand how to account for these potential effects on fatigue life."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis Engineering Fracture Design by : H. Liebowitz
Download or read book Engineering Fracture Design written by H. Liebowitz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture: An Advanced Treatise, Volume IV: Engineering Fracture Design presents the development and status of knowledge on sudden, catastrophic failure of structures due to unexpected brittle fracture of component materials. This book provides information pertinent to the engineering fracture design as well as the microscopic and macroscopic fundamentals of fracture. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the evaluation of fracture tests. This text then presents an analysis of temperature effects on fracture. Other chapters consider the fracture and carrying capacity of long, slender columns and related topics. This book discusses as well the problems in connection with columns, beams, and plates, and experimental evidence to support theories proposed for describing the strength and stiffness of these elements. The final chapter presents an analysis of the problem of brittle fracture in weldments. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, students, and research workers in industrial organizations, education and research institutions, and various government agencies.
