Book excerpt: This book reponds to the increasing demand of computer mo- delling of electrochemical processes in order to improve their speed and efficiency. The fundamental transport equa- tions in dilute solutions are given and it is established in detail under what circumstances a potential model with non- linear boundary conditions, involved by electrode reactions, can beused. Attention is directed towards the most impor- tant solution techniquesFEM, FDM and BEM and towards the solution of the non-linear system of equations (Successive Substitution, Newton-Raphson). Using the BEM, several two- dimensional and axisymmetrical examples of current density distributions are given and quantitative data, obtained in a copper electro-refining cell, are compared with calculated results. Applying Faraday's Law and the BEM, simulation of electro-deposition, electro-chemical levelling and machining are treated. Accuracy and stabilityare emphasized.

Book excerpt: Quantitative methods for the analysis and design of electrochemical systems have progressed greatly over the past forty years. Much of this progress is due to the work of Professor John Newman of the University of California-Berkeley. A tutorial symposium was organized to recognize Prof. Newman¿s contributions on the occasion of his 70th birthday. This issue contains a series of invited lectures covering the basic principles of electrochemical engineering as well as a variety of examples of applications in electrodeposition, fuel cells, batteries, and electrolytic processes.

This treatise is not a collection of articles from Recent Advances in Electrochemistry or Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry. It is an attempt at making a mature statement about the present position in the vast area of what is best looked at as a new interdisciplinary field. Texas A & M University J. O'M. White Preface to Volume 4 The science of degradation of materials involves a vast area of science and technology, the economic importance of which rivals that of any other clearly defined area affecting the standard of life. The basis of the corrosion process is the electrochemical charge-transfer reaction, and the center of the subject of the degradation of materials is electrochemical material science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Electrochemistry provides the basic outline of most topics of theoretical and applied electrochemistry for students not yet familiar with this field, as well as an outline of recent and advanced developments in electrochemistry for people who are already dealing with electrochemical problems. The content of this edition is arranged so that all basic information is contained in the first part of the book, which is now rewritten and simplified in order to make it more accessible and used as a textbook for undergraduate students. More advanced topics, of interest for postgraduate levels, come in the subsequent parts. This updated second edition focuses on experimental techniques, including a comprehensive chapter on physical methods for the investigation of electrode surfaces. New chapters deal with recent trends in electrochemistry, including nano- and micro-electrochemistry, solid-state electrochemistry, and electrocatalysis. In addition, the authors take into account the worldwide renewal of interest for the problem of fuel cells and include chapters on batteries, fuel cells, and double layer capacitors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains eight chapters covering a wide range of topics: ultrasonic vibration potentials, impedance measurements, photo electrochemical kinetics, chlorine production, electrochemical behavior of titanium, structural properties of membranes, bioelec troche mistry, and small-particle effects for electrocatalysis. Chapter 1, contributed by Zana and Yeager, discusses the little used but potentially important area of ultrasonic vibration potentials. The authors review the historical literature and the associated theoretical equations. They continue by discussing various aspects of the experimental technique and close with a review of the existing studies. They conclude by noting that vibra tion potentials may be useful for determining the effects of various agents on colloidal suspensions found in such important industries as paper production. Chapter 2 is a review of impedance techniques, written by Macdonald and McKubre. The authors include not only derivations of various impedance functions for electrochemical systems but also particularly useful discussions of instrumental methods. The authors close with an interesting claim: "the distribution of current and potential within a porous battery or fuel-cell electrode and within 'flow-through' electrodes is best analyzed in terms of the frequency dispersion of the impedance." Chapter 3, by Khan and Bockris, is a timely review of photo electrochemical kinetics and related devices. Their work begins by reviewing critically important papers on photoelectrochemical kinetics. They continue by presenting detailed discussions concern ing the conceptual ideas of the semiconductor-solution interface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a balance of theoretical considerations and practical problem solving of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This book incorporates the results of the last two decades of research on the theories and applications of impedance spectroscopy, including more detailed reviews of the impedance methods applications in industrial colloids, biomedical sensors and devices, and supercapacitive polymeric films. The book covers all of the topics needed to help readers quickly grasp how to apply their knowledge of impedance spectroscopy methods to their own research problems. It also helps the reader identify whether impedance spectroscopy may be an appropriate method for their particular research problem. This includes understanding how to correctly make impedance measurements, interpret the results, compare results with expected previously published results form similar chemical systems, and use correct mathematical formulas to verify the accuracy of the data. Unique features of the book include theoretical considerations for dealing with modeling, equivalent circuits, and equations in the complex domain, review of impedance instrumentation, best measurement methods for particular systems and alerts to potential sources of errors, equations and circuit diagrams for the most widely used impedance models and applications, figures depicting impedance spectra of typical materials and devices, extensive references to the scientific literature for more information on particular topics and current research, and a review of related techniques and impedance spectroscopy modifications.
