Book excerpt: To study the formation of microvoids and Cu precipitates in Fe-Cu mode alloys (0-1.0 wt. % Cu) and A533B reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel, positron lifetime and Vickers microhardness have been measured after fast neutron irradiation to a fluence of 8.3x1018n/cm2 below 150°C. Long positron lifetimes for the Fe-Cu alloys ranging from 300 to 420 ps and 270 to 350 ps for A533B RPV steels have been observed, which show microvoid formation. The long lifetimes in the Fe-Cu alloys depend on the Cu content and thermal aging at 550°C before irradiation. This fact suggests incorporation of irradiation-induced vacancies at Cu atoms and their precipitates leading to suppression of the microvoid formation. The long lifetime component for the Fe-Cu alloys recovers around 350°C, while that for A533B steel recovers around 300°C. To estimate the microvoid sizes, superimposed-atom model calculations of positron lifetimes in microvoids consisting of 1 (V1) to 66 (V66) vacancies have been performed, respectively. Based on these calculations, the formation and post-irradiation annealing behaviour of microvoids are examined.

Book excerpt: We present the results of a systematic investigation of neutron-irradiated and thermally annealed Fe-Cu-Ni-P model alloys using positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), including lifetime and Doppler broadening techniques, and Rockwell hardness. These alloys were examined in the as-fabricated state, after irradiation at 270° C to 1 x 1019 n.cm-2, and to 8 x 1019 n.cm-2, and after successive post-irradiation isochronal anneals at temperatures from 200 to 600° C. The results can be qualitatively explained by invoking an irradiation-induced microstructure consisting of a combination of small dislocation-type defects or defect clusters (matrix damage) and dense precipitation of fine scale irradiation-induced precipitates. The matrix damage anneals between 350° C and 450° C. The irradiation-induced precipitates also evolve with annealing, but at higher temperatures. The combined effect of high Cu and high Ni concentrations leads to more extensive irradiation-induced precipitation than in cases where either element is missing, whereas the effect of P is less pronounced. We analyze and compare the results with similar measurements performed on irradiated pressure-vessel steels and with other positron measurements on model alloys, reported in the literature.

Book excerpt: Fe-Cu model alloys (0, 0.05, 0.15, 0.30 and 1.00 wt.%Cu) of Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels irradiated by fast neutrons (8.3x1018 n/cm2) at about 100°C are studied by positron annihilation spectroscopy, positron lifetime and coincidence Doppler roadening, in order to analyze the irradiation-induced vacancy-Cu aggregation. We have observed nanovoids (vacancy clusters) whose inner surfaces are covered by Cu atoms in not only high and medium Cu (0.15-1.0 wt.%) alloys but also low Cu (0.05 wt.%) alloys. The typical size of the nanovoids and the fraction of the covering with Cu on the inner surfaces depend on the Cu content. The dissociation of vacancies from the nanovoids by the post-irradiation isochronal annealing at about 400°C leads to the formation of the ultrafine Cu precipitates even for the Fe-0.05wt.%Cu alloy.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positron lifetime and micro-Vickers hardness were measured on well annealed model alloys, Fe-C(0%, 0.2%, 0.35%)-Cu(0%, 0.15%, 0.3%), after 1MeV proton irradiation with a dose of 3x1017 /cm2 below 80°C. Longer lifetime, ranging from 310 to 360 ps, component appears and gives evidence of formation of microvoids containing about 10 vacancies. The longer lifetime decreases with increasing copper content and suggests smaller microvoids for Fe-Cu alloys. The longer lifetime increases with annealing temperature up to 400°C in pure Fe, but exhibits decrease around 300°C in Fe-C-Cu alloys. This decrease indicates reduction in effective size of microvoid around 350°C. Irradiation hardening is accelerated by copper but retarded by carbon. Post-irradiation anneal hardening is revealed at about 150°C and 350°C in Fe-C and Fe-C-Cu alloys. In Fe-Cu alloys, however, a single narrow hardening peak is observed around 350°C. The irradiation hardening in Fe-C alloy anneals out around 550°C, while that in alloys containing Cu makes complete recovery at about 650°C.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irradiation hardening and microstructure evolution under neutron irradiation have been investigated for pure Fe, Fe-0.15Cu, Fe-0.28Cu and Fe-0.46Cu alloys. All the alloys were annealed at 780°C for 20 min and quenched in iced water. Neutron irradiations were performed in the Japan Material Test Reactor (JMTR) up to a fluence of about 1 x 1022n/m2 at different fluxes (3.0 x 1016 and 1.5 x 1015 n/m2s) at 290°C utilizing a so-called "multi-division temperature control irradiation rig" to investigate flux effects under controlled irradiation temperature and flux. The irradiation hardening increased with increasing copper concentration. Positron annihilation lifetime spectrometry (PAS) revealed that the second lifetime component (?2) was observed only in pure iron and Fe-0.15Cu alloy irradiated at the low flux condition. As for the flux effect, the irradiation hardening was larger at the lower flux condition in all the model alloys and A533B steel. Post-irradiation annealing experiments indicated that there were two recovery stages: the first was above 350°C and the second was around 550°C. The amount of hardening recovery in the first stage decreased with increasing copper concentration and depended on the flux; a larger recovery was observed at the lower flux condition. In contrast, the amount of recovery in the second stage increased with increasing copper concentration and was independent of the flux. It is considered that the first recovery is related to the annealing out-of-matrix defects and the second one is due to dissolution of copper precipitates. The ?2 of PAS disappeared after the annealing at 350°C, indicating that microvoids decomposed during the annealing.

Book excerpt: It has been recognised for many years that copper plays a significant role in the embrittlement process of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels subjected to neutron irradiation. In developing fundamental understanding, and mechanistic models to predict embrittlement, it is important to identify the microscopic mechanisms underlying this phenomena. The purpose of this paper is to discuss recent results obtained from thermal ageing experiments on model alloys doped with copper and nitrogen. These experiments were designed to characterise the material prior to receiving irradiated samples encompassing a wide range of flux, fluence and temperature conditions.
