Book excerpt: Climate change predictions have implications for long-lived, slow-growing, sessile organisms such as forest trees. Past research indicates that trees are fairly well adapted to local environments in which their wild ancestors evolved. Given the large and climatically diverse "natural" (putatively pre-Columbian) ranges occupied by many American species, it is logical to suppose that tree species may have intraspecifically variable responses to future climate change. I have used data from two provenance tests, one of green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) and one of white ash (Fraxinus americana L.), to model the responses to climate change of green and white ash and 55 and 50, respectively, natural populations within each. Using a mixed-effects modeling framework, I have developed models of 32- to 39-year survival and mean annual diameter growth as functions of climatic distance, or the difference between the climate of the plantation site and the climate of the population autochthony. Three models have peaks in survival or growth at small negative or positive climatic distances, possibly indicating that most populations are reasonably well adapted or have a small lag in local adaptation. White ash growth, however, is highest at a large, negative climatic distance, which possibly reveals limitations in the data used in the models. For both species, the random effect of plantation has a significant effect on growth and survival, and the random effect of provenance has a significant effect on growth. Standard deviations, pseudo-r-squared values, and variance components reveal that the effect of plantation on the response to climatic distance was large in all models, indicating that management of site conditions could be used to potentially ameliorate the negative effects of climate change on growth and survival of these species. Finally, models suggest that assisted migration may not be necessary to maintain survival under climate change.

Book excerpt: Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), an autochthonous and abundant representative of the Oleacea family of plants in Central Europe, is a characteristic member of the hardwood alluvial forest and, as such, exposed to moderate, but repeated inundation. Growth and survival studies indicated an adaptation to oxygen deficits in compliance with this habitat, whose physiological basis, however, has received little attention. Aim of the present work was to characterise the flooding tolerance of common ash with respect to central parameters of carbon metabolism. For this purpose, three-year-old ash seedlings were exposed to controlled flooding treatments of 1-28 days. Photosynthesis, carbohydrate contents and parameters of anaerobic root metabolism were determined. Growth parameters, as well as flood-induced leaf injuries were also acquired. Plants of three provenances - Rhine floodplain, Swabian Jura, Black Forest - were compared in order to test if regular flooding of the alluvial forest has resulted in the evolution of a flood-tolerant ecotype. In addition, more detailed studies were carried out to compare common ash's photosynthetic performance and assimilate transport under hypoxia with that of other tree species of lower and higher flooding tolerance.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Black ash (Fraxinus nigra Marshall) wetlands are at risk of significant ecological and functional changes due to the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB) (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)), which kills trees in the Fraxinus (ash) genus. Simulated EAB infestations consisting of girdle treatments and ash cut treatments have been implemented in black ash wetlands to study the impacts of black ash canopy dieoff in these systems. Initial findings include ground layer vegetation shifts and impacts to carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) release from soils, but these factors and their interactions with microtopography in these systems are not well understood. The objectives of this study were to explore how vegetation and greenhouse gas fluxes (GHGs) are currently responding to simulated EAB treatments in the Ottawa National Forest in the Great Lakes Region of North America six years after initial treatment implementation, and to determine how microtopography affects them as well. Tree seedling counts and diversity were not found to be affected by treatments alone. Microtopography, however, had a larger impact and showed more seedlings and a higher diversity of seedlings growing on hummocks. Seedlings over one year of age were also found in greater numbers and with more diversity on top of hummocks. Herbaceous species have continued their trend of increased cover in treated sites, with higher cover of obligate wetland species and graminoids in treated sites as well. Increased herbaceous cover was found on top of hummocks rather than in hollows. These findings suggest that herbaceous cover is influenced by both treatments and microtopography, while tree regeneration is more influenced by microtopography. The implications of the lack of response between treatments for seedlings is that the increase in water levels at our wetland sites may be buffered by microtopography and our sites could continue to stay forested following an EAB infestation. CO2 and CH4 fluxes showed different responses to treatment and microtopography. CO2 flux was highest in control sites and on top of hummocks, while CH4 was not found to be different between treatments or microtopography. The postulated reasons for these findings are depth to water table and root respiration. For CO2, the lower water levels allowed for more soil to be aerated and decomposed, and there is more root respiration in control sites because of a higher volume of living trees. For CH4, the low water levels created an environment where little CH4 was produced at all. When landscape-scale estimates of GHG fluxes were created using weighted fluxes from hummocks and hollows, CO2 fluxes were overestimated and CH4 fluxed were underestimated when the elevation-based flux differences due to microtopography were not factored in. These findings suggest that microtopography should be included when scaling up gas flux measurements to the landscape scale in order to get the most accurate estimates.

Book excerpt: This book delivers current state-of-the-science knowledge of tree ecophysiology, with particular emphasis on adaptation to a novel future physical and chemical environment. Unlike the focus of most books on the topic, this considers air chemistry changes (O3, NOx, and N deposition) in addition to elevated CO2 effects and its secondary effects of elevated temperature. The authors have addressed two systems essential for plant life: water handling capacity from the perspective of water transport; the coupling of xylem and phloem water potential and flow; water and nutrition uptake via likely changes in mycorrhizal relationships; control of water loss via stomata and its retention via cellular regulation; and within plant carbon dynamics from the perspective of environmental limitations to growth, allocation to defences, and changes in partitioning to respiration. The authors offer expert knowledge and insight to develop likely outcomes within the context of many unknowns. We offer this comprehensive analysis of tree responses and their capacity to respond to environmental changes to provide a better insight in understanding likelihood for survival, as well as planning for the future with long-lived, stationary organisms adapted to the past: trees.
