Book excerpt: Nonnative Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay discusses the proposed plan to offset the dramatic decline in the bay's native oysters by introducing disease-resistant reproductive Suminoe oysters from Asia. It suggests this move should be delayed until more is known about the environmental risks, even though carefully regulated cultivation of sterile Asian oysters in contained areas could help the local industry and researchers. It is also noted that even though these oysters eat the excess algae caused by pollution, it could take decades before there are enough of them to improve water quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Bivalve Molluscs is a comprehensive and thoroughlyupdated second edition of Bivalve Molluscs, covering allmajor aspects of this important class of invertebrates. As well asbeing an important class biologically and ecologically, many of thebivalves are fished and cultured commercially (e.g. mussels, oysters, scallops and clams) in a multi-billion dollar worldwideindustry. Elizabeth Gosling has written a landmark book that will stand formany years as the standard work on the subject. Chapters inMarine Bivalve Molluscs cover morphology, ecology, feeding, reproduction, settlement and recruitment, growth, physiology, fisheries, aquaculture, genetics, diseases and parasites, andpublic health issues. A full understanding of many of these aspectsis vital for all those working in bivalve fisheries andculture. An essential purchase for anyone concerned with this importantclass of animals, copies of Marine Bivalve Molluscs shouldbe on the shelves of biologists, ecologists, environmentalscientists, fisheries scientists and personnel within theaquaculture industry. Copies of the book should be available in alllibraries and research establishments where these subjects arestudied or taught. Reviews of the First Edition • An admirable achievement... a valuable addition to marinesciences libraries everywhere. The back cover of this book saysthat it is a landmark text that will stand for many years as thestandard work on this subject. I can only agree with thissentiment. Aquaculture • A welcome addition to the literature and provides thereader with a comprehensive overview of biological andenvironmental factors that affect and control both naturalpopulations of marine bivalves and culture operations.Aquaculture International • The author has done an admirable job in compiling a wealthof information into a readable text. Transactions of theAmerican Fisheries Society • Will serve well as a description of much of both theexperimental biology and the aquaculture of bivalves. Journal ofExperimental Marine Biology and Ecology • Provides excellent reviews of all major aspects…anextremely important reference for anyone engaged in bivalveresearch, fisheries management, and aquaculture. QuarterlyReview of Biology • The book is very readable, in an easy style. It is wellillustrated and there is a wealth of data and statistics presented.Bulletin of The Malacological Society of London

Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the nutrient and organic matter inputs in estuaries and other coastal ecosystems, their effects on geochemistry and community structure and possibilities for recovery of the systems to a trophic state that is beneficial for man and nature. The book provides many examples of the effects of the enhanced supply of nutrients and organic matter on the chemical features of the water and on the structure, metabolism and trophic pathways of the biological communities. Also included are several case studies providing considerable insight into the response of the different coastal ecosystems to long term changes in the trophic state of the water. Current knowledge on modeling as a tool to manage the trophic state of the coastal ecosystems is also dealt with, making this book one of interests to scientist and students as well as managers.

It encompasses both the similarities and differences in approach in rearing clams, oysters and scallops in different climatic zones. All aspects of the culture process are described, together with basic considerations in choosing a site for hatchery development and in the design of a suitable facility. It also includes the post-hatchery handling of larvae in remote setting and also of spat in both land- and sea-based nurseries. This document is intended to assist both technicians entering the field as well as entrepreneurs researching investment opportunities in bivalve culture.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current growth in global aquaculture is paralleled by an equally significant increase in companies involved in aquafeed manufacture. Latest information has identified over 1,200 such companies, not including those organizations in production of a variety of other materials, i. e. , vitamins, minerals, and therapeutics, all used in varying degrees in proper feed formulation. Aquaculture industries raising particular economically valued species, i. e. , penaeid shrimps and salmonids, are making major demands on feed ingredients, while relatively new industries, such as til apia farming, portent a significant acceleration in demand for properly formulated aquafeeds by the end of the present decade and into the next century. As requirements for aquafeeds increases, shortages are anticipated in various ingredients, especially widely used proteinaceous resources such as fish meal. A variety of other proteinaceous commodities are being considered as partial or complete replacement for fish meal, especially use of plant protein sources such as soybean meal. In the past five years, vegetable protein meal production has increased 10% while fish meal production has dropped over 50%, since 1989, largely attributed to overfishing and serious decline in wild stock. Throughout fisheries processing industries, traditional concepts as "waste" have given way to more prudent approaches, emphasizing total by-product recovery. Feed costs are a major consideration in aquaculture where in some groups, i. e. , salmonids, high protein-containing feeds using quality fish meal, can account for as much as 40 to 60% of production costs.
