Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel to determine the effects of various external-store configurations of the longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic characteristics of a model of a 45 degree swept-wing fighter airplane. Pylon-mounted stores located at 23.8, 46.2, and 67.0 percent of the wing semispan were tested individually and in various combinations. The inboard stores relative to outboard stores were similar in shape but approximately 25 percent greater in size. The stores located at 46.2 percent of the wing semispan represented a large fuel tank and had an unsymmetrical shape.

Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the influence of wing aspect ratio and tail location on the effects of compressibility upon static longitudinal stability. The investigation showed that the use of reduced wing aspect ratios or short tail lengths leads to serious reductions in high-speed stability and the possibility of high-speed instability.

Book excerpt: The results of transonic wind tunnel tests in which the effects of external stores on the aerodynamic characteristics of the F-15 aircraft were determined are presented and discussed. The analysis includes evaluations of the incremental drag rise, the incremental changes in static margin, and the lateral-directional derivatives associated with the various store configurations. Wind tunnel coefficient data for several baseline configurations are also presented. Data are presented for Mach numbers ranging from 0.6 to 1.3 at angles of attack from -4 to 20 deg at zero-deg sideslip angle, and for sideslip angles from -4 to 10 deg at angles of attack of 0, 10, 15, and 20 deg.

Donaldson and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploratory static-stability tests were made on models of the MK-84 weapon and a modular weapon configuration during simulated weapon separation from the wing of the F-4C Tactical Fighter Aircraft at freestream Mach numbers 1.76, 2.0, and 2.5. Data were obtained with the parent aircraft at zero angle of attack and the weapon at the carriage incidence angle of -1 deg. Supplementary data were obtained for weapon angles of attack of + or - deg. Unit Reynolds number ranged from 4.6 million per ft at M free stream mach number = 1.76 to 6.2 million per ft at M free stream mach number = 2.5. Selected results are presented which show the effects on the weapon aerodynamic loads of free-stream Mach number, weapon angle of attack, weapon axial position, and the presence of other stores. Representative shadowgraph and schlieren photographs of the interference flow field are also presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: The trends in lateral stability and control produced variations of the mass distribution were determined for a model with a 45 degree sweptback wing. Calculations were made to correlate the trends determined by theory with those determined from tests of a free-flying dynamic model in the Langley free-flight tunnel.
