Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. This compelling text provides fresh insight into an area that is often touched upon, but rarely examined in any great detail - the relationship between Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) and their host governments. Taking Japanese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) strategy, arguably the model of FDI, Young-Chan Kim takes a revealing look at why the United Kingdom (UK) has dominated among the EU member states for FDI destination, while ironically losing its nationalized car manufacturers. Scholars of business history, international business and business economics will find this work invaluable.

Book Synopsis Europe’s Shift to EVs Amid Intensifying Global Competition by : Mr. Philippe Wingender
Download or read book Europe’s Shift to EVs Amid Intensifying Global Competition written by Mr. Philippe Wingender and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2024-10-11 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European countries have set ambitious goals to reduce their carbon emissions. These goals include a transition to electric vehicles (EVs)—a sector that China increasingly dominates globally—which could reduce the demand for Europe’s large and interconnected auto sector. This paper aims to size up the tradeoffs between Europe’s shift towards EVs and key macroeconomic outcomes, and analyze which policies may sharpen or ease them. Using state-of-the-art macroeconomic and trade models we analyze a scenario in which the share of Chinese cars in EU purchases rises by 15 percent over 5 years as a result of both a positive productivity shock for car production in China and a demand shock that shifts consumer preferences towards Chinese cars (given China’s dominance in the EV sector). We find that for the EU as a whole, the GDP cost of this shift is small in the short term, in the range of 0.2-0.3 percent of GDP, and close to zero over the long term. Adverse short-run effects are more significant for smaller economies heavily reliant on the car sector, mainly in Central Europe. Protectionist policies, such as tariffs on Chinese EVs, would raise the GDP cost of the EV transition. A further increase in Chinese FDI inflows that results in a significant share of Chinese EVs being produced in Central European economies, on the other hand, would offset losses in these economies by supporting their shift from supplying the internal combustion engine (ICE) production chain to that of EVs.

Book Synopsis Unity with Diversity in the European Economy by : Centre for Economic Policy Research (Great Britain)

This book was released on 1990-08-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enlargement that encompassed the accession of Greece in 1981 and of Spain and Portugal in 1986 significantly altered the balance of the European Community (EC), while the double shock of EC membership and 1992 could have driven the economies of the new members into depression or, equally, accelerate their modernisation. This important 1990 book from the Centre for Economic Policy Research examines theoretical issues in the integration of a diverse economic region and the combined impact of EC membership, financial integration and the single market programme on the joining countries. There is an introduction by the editors and a foreword by Michael Emerson and Richard Portes.

Book Synopsis The EU's Government of Industries by : Bernard Jullien
Download or read book The EU's Government of Industries written by Bernard Jullien and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent is business activity governed at a European scale? Since the advent of the recent economic crisis, the EU’s choices about the euro, debt ratios and interest rates have caught the headlines and highlighted the importance of EU decision-making arenas. However, these macro-economic events actually tell us only part of the story about the extent to which business activity is now governed at a European scale. Based upon original research on four manufactured or processed goods industries (cars, wine, pharmaceuticals and aquaculture), and driven by theory that is constructivist, institutionalist and sociological, this book sets out to analyse just what Europe governs, by whom and why. In doing so, it reveals three recurrent features of the European government of industries: its omnipresence, its incompleteness and its de-politicization. The authors show that the many gaps in the EU’s mode of governing industries stem from struggles over economic doctrine as well as the continued unwillingness of many actors to accord the EU a legitimacy to act politically in the name of industrial government. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Studies and Political Economy as well as those studying Political Science, Economics, Sociology and Business Studies.
