Book excerpt: Low streamflows and warm stream temperatures, caused mainly from agricultural diversions, currently limit available habitat and productivity of trout, including native Lahontan cutthroat trout in Nevada0́9s Walker River Basin. Environmental water purchases, which transfer water from willing sellers to instream uses (i.e for fish), are being evaluated to improve instream habitat. To determine which environmental water purchases to prioritize, this study was undertaken to build a computer model in order to simulate stream temperatures under differing environmental water transfer scenarios. Model runs simulate a range of environmental water transfers at major diversions and reservoirs throughout the Walker River Basin. Results indicate that low flows generally coincide with critically warm stream temperatures, cooler stream temperatures exist in the East Walker River, a tributary of the Walker River, during warm seasons which provide good habitat for fish, environmental transfers can improve stream temperatures for some highly impacted reaches by up to 3℗ʻC in dry years, and environmental water transfers have a greater effect in dry years than wet years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flows of the Columbia River, although modified substantially during the twentieth century, still vary considerably between seasons and between years. Lowest flows tend to occur during summer months when demand for irrigation water is at its highest and when water temperatures are greatest. These periods of low flows, high demand, and high temperature are critical periods for juvenile salmon migrating downstream through the Columbia River hydropower system. Although impacts on salmon of any individual water withdrawal may be small, the cumulative effects of numerous withdrawals will affect Columbia River flows and would pose increased risks to salmon survival. The body of scientific knowledge explaining salmon migratory behavior and physiology is substantial, but imperfect, and decision makers should acknowledge this and be willing to take action in the face of uncertainties. In order to provide a more comprehensive water permitting process, the State of Washington, Canada, other basin states, and tribal groups should establish a basin-wide forum to consider future water withdrawal application permits. If the State of Washington issues additional permits for water withdrawals from the Columbia River, those permits should contain provisions that allow withdrawals to be curtailed during critical high-demand periods.

Book excerpt: The present Bulletin presents a complete response from the ‘Technical Committee of ICOLD on Dams and Water Transfer (CDWT)’ to the Terms of Reference. It starts with related global information, brings out related efforts made in countries with completely differing climate, economy, population distribution etc. about present status within and between river basins & countries – both surplus and or deficit, while recognizing the crucial role played by dams in water transfer to needy regions. It then enumerates guidelines followed in considering various options, while identifying geographical issues, limited by political territories & legal issues like water treaties. Essentially then, it dwells on possible need, potential and problems in water transfers that must be handled to overcome B/C issues faced by needy countries. In order to assist concerned professionals, the Bulletin finally elaborates on objections raised by different stake-holders in the subject and provides answers generated globally. The on-going debate world-over about WRD versus environmental impacts is then dealt with to help Member-countries overcome various issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High water temperatures in rivers have detrimental effects on riverine water quality and ecology. In this study, two river temperature models, within the agricultural watershed model Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), were investigated for their ability to simulate water temperatures accurately throughout the year. The original temperature model within SWAT uses a linear approach to estimate stream temperature based on air temperature and does not account for hydrological components for calculating stream temperature. Recently, a new stream temperature model for SWAT was developed that combines meteorological with hydrological components such as lateral flow, snowmelt, groundwater flow and surface runoff. The model also uses three elements for the stream temperature calculations – specifically, within a sub-basin (temperature and flow rate), upstream of sub-basin (temperature and incoming flow), and air-water temperature heat exchange transfer. The goal of this research was to improve the recently developed temperature model further by incorporating different types of heat exchange sources, in addition to air-water heat transfer. The edited model was tested for Marys River, a west tributary of the Willamette River in Oregon. The output from the edited model was then compared with observed stream temperatures, for different spatial locations within the watershed to assess the model efficiency. The results showed a good agreement for forested region compared to Ficklin’s default model with RMSE of both models matching. However, there were over predictions and more noise in predicting stream temperature for agricultural region within the watershed in which resulted in higher RMSE for edited model.

Book excerpt: The main objective of the Water Framework Directive in the European countries is to achieve a “good status” of all the water bodies, in the integrated management of river basins. In order to assess the impact of improvement measures, water quality models are necessary. During the previous decades the progress in computer technology and computational methods has supported the development of advanced mathematical models for pollutant transport in rivers and streams. This book is intended to provide the fundamental knowledge needed for a deeper understanding of these models and the development of new ones, which will fulfil future quality requirements in water resources management. This book focuses on the fundamentals of computational techniques required in water quality modelling. Advection, dispersion and concentrated sources or sinks of contaminants lead to the formulation of the fundamental differential equation of pollutant transport. Its integration, according to appropriate initial and boundary conditions and with the knowledge of the velocity field, allows for pollutant behaviour to be assessed in the entire water body. An analytical integration is convenient only in one-dimensional approach with considerable simplification. Integration in the numerical field is useful for taking into account particular aspects of water body and pollutants. To ensure their reliability, the models require accurate calibration and validation, based on proper data, taken from direct measurements. In addition, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis are also of utmost importance. All the above items are discussed in detail in the 21 chapters of the book, which is written in a didactic form for professionals and students.
