Regardless of research suggesting a correlation between the two, teachers report feeling unprepared to deal with challenging behaviors. As a result, teachers resort to reactive classroom management rather than proactive and preventative strategies. Behavior specific praise (BSP) is an empirically supported, proactive strategy to reinforce desirable student behaviors. Following a review of the literature, we identified tactile prompting and self-monitoring as effective methods to increase teachers use of BSP while sustaining intervention long enough until teachers contacted natural maintaining contingencies. We created electronic tactile awareness prompting with self-monitoring (eTAPS) by combining two applications on Apple Watch. This study primarily investigated the effects of eTAPS on special education teachers use of BSP. Secondarily, this study investigated the impact that BSP would have on the on-task behaviors of targeted students with disabilities demonstrating frequent off-task behaviors. Results indicated that eTAPS was effective in increasing and maintaining BSP rates. Furthermore, significant increases in student on-task behavior occurred. Implications of results and future research are discussed.

Following a review of the literature, the researcher selected tactile prompting paired with a visual prompt to increase specials teachers' use of BSP. Using a multiple probe across participants design with an add-in component, this study investigated the effects of a visual prompt and a tactile prompt paired with a visual prompt to increase BSP use for two elementary school music teachers. Researchers also examined whether increasing BSP use affected the rate of corrective statement use. Results provide preliminary evidence that a tactile prompt paired with a visual prompt is more effective than a visual prompt alone for increasing BSP use.

Book excerpt: Positive reinforcement, in the form of praise, is one of the most powerful tools used in effective programming by classroom staff for all types of educational environments. It is not only important for staff to use praise but to also specify the behavior for which the praise is being given. Increasing behavior specific praise in different educational settings was the aim of this current study. Two settings were observed in which a MotivAider tactile prompting device was worn. This device prompted the teacher and one instructional assistant to provide behavior specific praise once every minute during a 10 minute session. The researcher recorded the frequency of behavior specific praise, non-behavior specific praise and corrective statements delivered to students by each participant. It was discovered that using the MotivAider increased the amount of behavior specific praise delivered by all staff members whilst they were receiving the prompt themselves. It was also demonstrated that some participants reacted to the other participant's increased frequency of praise, in that setting, when they themselves were not receiving the tactile prompt. A third finding was that an increase in the frequency of praise statements did not result in a decrease in the frequency of corrective statements.

Book excerpt: The implementation of effective classroom management strategies has been associated with increases in student academic engagement and decreases in student disruptive behavior. However, teacher-training programs often fail to provide pre-service teachers with the knowledge base and experience necessary to implement these strategies. Training options exist for in-service teachers to acquire these skills; however, they often require a level of time on the part of the trainer and trainee that may not be available in schools. A more time efficient training solution may be video modeling plus a brief self-monitoring intervention. This study investigated the use of video modeling plus self-monitoring to train teachers to use specific praise as a classroom management strategy. A multiple-baseline design across three teacher participants was utilized to evaluate improvements in teacher behavior. Data were also collected on student outcomes (i.e., academic engagement and disruptive behavior). Results indicate that the intervention increased the use of specific praise in two of the three teacher participants; results did not indicate improvement in student outcomes (i.e., academic engagement and disruptive behavior). Limitations, directions for future research, and implications for practice and research are also presented.

As teachers work with more students with disabilities in the general education setting, teachers are searching for effective strategies that will decrease problem behavior and increase learning results. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teacher administered behavior-specific praise on promoting positive behavior in students, as demonstrated by exhibiting on-task behavior and decreasing negative behaviors, in addition to examining the feasibility of delivering it at 1-minute, 3-minute, and 5-minute intervals in three different general or special education classrooms. An elementary school was selected for the site of the study. Three students served as primary participants, and three teachers (i.e., two general education and one special education teacher) served as secondary participants. A single-subject alternating treatments design was used to assess the overall effects of the intervention. Results indicated that teacher administered behavior-specific praise is an effective, easy to use evidence-based practice which can be used by teachers for the purpose of promoting positive academic and social behavior in students, including those who have been and are at risk for being identified as having a disability.
