Book excerpt: As the demands for cleaner, more efficient, reduced and zero carbon emitting transportation increase, the traditional focus of Combustion Chemistry research is stretching and adapting to help provide solutions to these contemporary issues. Combustion Chemistry and the Carbon Neutral Future: What will the Next 25 Years of Research Require? presents a guide to current research in the field and an exploration of possible future steps as we move towards cleaner, greener and reduced carbon combustion chemistry. Beginning with a discussion of engine emissions and soot, the book goes on to discuss a range of alternative fuels, including hydrogen, ammonia, small alcohols and other bio-oxygenates, natural gas, syngas and synthesized hydrocarbon fuels. Methods for predicting and improving efficiency and sustainability, such as low temperature and catalytic combustion, chemical looping, supercritical fluid combustion, and diagnostic monitoring even at high pressure, are then explored. Some novel aspects of biomass derived aviation fuels and combustion synthesis are also covered. Combining the knowledge and experience of an interdisciplinary team of experts in the field, Combustion Chemistry and the Carbon Neutral Future: What will the Next 25 Years of Research Require? is an insightful guide to current and future focus areas for combustion chemistry researchers in line with the transition to greener, cleaner technologies. Provides insight on current developments in combustion chemistry as a tool for supporting a reduced-carbon future Reviews modeling and diagnostic tools, in addition to key approaches and alternative fuels Includes projections for the future from leaders in the field, pointing current and prospective researchers to potentially fruitful areas for exploration

Book excerpt: The unsteady process of head on quenching of two laminar premixed hydrogen-air flames in one-dimension by mutual annihilation is investigated numerically using a detailed chemical mechanism and realistic transport. The process of annihilation through interactions is inevitable in highly corrugated turbulent flames, and contributes to turbulent flame shortening. Processes leading to mutual annihilation involve interactions that take place in the following stages: (1) interaction of preheat zones, which corresponds to the transport of heat and reactants, (2) interactions of the reaction layers as the flames merge, and finally (3) the process of burnout. The primary objective of this work is to study the effects of differential diffusion during the various events that occur during the unsteady process of annihilation. For the stoichiometric condition two cases are considered namely; a case where transport is based on prescribing non-unity Lewis numbers for all the species and a case with unity Lewis numbers prescribed for all the species. The latter case provides with a reference problem for the other flames considered. Because of the importance of differential diffusion during thermo-diffusive interactions, which are owed to the transport properties of H2, relative to temperature and the oxidizer, two additional cases are considered. They correspond to lean and rich hydrogen-air flames. The results show that differential diffusion of H2 plays an important role in determining the composition of the reacting mixture and thus, affects the final temperature and composition of the products. The differential diffusion of H2 causes a deficiency of the fuel for the stoichiometric and lean cases thereby altering the rates of reactions involving H2 while merger. For the rich case the deficiency caused by the differential diffusion is offset by the presence of excess H2 in the reaction mixture. Due to these conditions for the rich flames and non-unity Lewis number case for the s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to study the burning of laminar gas jet diffusion flames in a zero-gravity environment. The tests were conducted in the Lewis Research Center 2.2-Second Zero-Gravity Facility. The photographic results indicated that a sudden decrease in gravity level from 1 to 0 effected an immediate reduction in the length of the flame. Continued time in zero gravity resulted in the flame expanding away from the burner until extinguishment appeared to occur. Nondimensionalization of the governing flow equation yielded the parameters used to correlate the buoyancy effects.

Book excerpt: Detailed, time-dependent, two-dimensional numerical simulations with full hydrogen-oxygen chemistry are used to investigate the effects of gravity on the stability and structure of laminar flames in lean, premixed hydrogen - air mixtures. The calculations show that the effects of gravity becomes more important as the lean flammability limit is approached. In a 12% hydrogen - air mixture, gravity plays only a secondary role in determining the multidimensional structure of the flame with the stability and structure of the flame controlled primarily by the thermo-diffusive instability mechanism. However, in leaner hydrogen-air mixtures gravity becomes more important. Upward-propagating flames are highly curved and evolve into a bubble rising upwards in the tube. Downward-propagating flames are flat or even oscillate between structures with concave and convex curvatures. The zero-gravity flame shows only cellular structures. Cellular structures which are present in zero gravity can be suppressed by the effect of buoyancy for mixtures leaner than 11% hydrogen. These observations are explained on the basis of an interaction between the processes leading to buoyancy-induced Reyleigh-Taylor instability and the thermo-diffusive stability.

Book excerpt: Ultra-lean, hydrogen-air mixtures are found to support another kind of laminar flame that is steady and stable beside flat flames and flame balls. Direct numerical simulations are performed of flames that develop into steadily and stably propagating cells. These cells were the original meaning of the word"flamelet'' when they were observed in lean flammability studies conducted early in the development of combustion science. Several aspects of these two-dimensional flame cells are identified and are contrasted with the properties of one-dimensional flame balls and flat flames. Although lean hydrogen-air flames are subject to thermo-diffusive effects, in this case the result is to stabilize the flame rather than to render it unstable. The flame cells may be useful as basic components of engineering models for premixed combustion when the other types of idealized flames are inapplicable.

Book excerpt: The research performed at the Center for Reactive Flow and Dynamical Systems in the Laboratory for Computational Physics and Fluid Dynamics, at the Naval Research Laboratory, in support of the NASA Microgravity Science and Applications Program is described. The primary focus was on investigating fundamental questions concerning the propagation and extinction of premixed flames in Earth gravity and in microgravity environments. The approach was to use detailed time-dependent, multispecies, numerical models as tools to simulate flames in different gravity environments. The models include a detailed chemical kinetics mechanism consisting of elementary reactions among the eight reactive species involved in hydrogen combustion, coupled to algorithms for convection, thermal conduction, viscosity, molecular and thermal diffusion, and external forces. The external force, gravity, can be put in any direction relative to flame propagation and can have a range of values. A combination of one-dimensional and two-dimensional simulations was used to investigate the effects of curvature and dilution on ignition and propagation of flames, to help resolve fundamental questions on the existence of flammability limits when there are no external losses or buoyancy forces in the system, to understand the mechanism leading to cellular instability, and to study the effects of gravity on the transition to cellular structure. A flame in a microgravity environment can be extinguished without external losses, and the mechanism leading to cellular structure is not preferential diffusion but a thermo-diffusive instability. The simulations have also lead to a better understanding of the interactions between buoyancy forces and the processes leading to thermo-diffusive instability. Oran, Elaine S. and Kailasanath, K.
