Book excerpt: Among different approaches that can be considered for concrete rehabilitation, bonded overlays are often the most economical alternative. The primary purpose of overlays is to extend the life of the candidate structures, either by restoring the quality and integrity of the surface and/or the re-establishing or improving the load-carrying capacity. Nevertheless, the durability of bonded overlay systems still draws concerns in the technical community because of bond sustainability problems encountered in a number of cases. At this time, there is still no accepted design approach or methodology that can warrant the practitioner a successful outcome of the repair. This State-of-Art report summarizes the findings with respect to all aspects involved in the overlaying process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure is developed by which the likelihood of delamination of bonded concrete overlays on continuously reinforced concrete pavements is reduced. The procedure compares the early age interface stress to the expected interface bond strength for a variety of environmental conditions. When the calculated stress exceeds the expected strength, it is recommended that overlay placement be curtailed until the possibility of debonding is reduced. A finite element method program is used to determine the early age stresses resulting from temperature and shrinkage induced volume changes. Stresses were determined for a variety of environmental and material combinations and overlay thicknesses. Analyses show that a significant reduction in stress results from the use of overlay materials which have a lower modulus and thermal coefficient than those of the existing slab. The stresses for a given combination of materials and environmental conditions are compared to the interface bond strength at early ages. Early age interface shear and tensile strengths are estimated from 7-day strength test results. The estimated strength, together with the variability of the interface strength, are used to calculate the likelihood of delamination for a given type of overlay and time of placement. This likelihood can be reduced through the selection of a different overlay material or time of placement.

Book excerpt: Laboratory testing and full-scale field testing were used to accomplish the research objective. Laboratory testing involved monitoring interface strains in fabricated PCC/ACC composite beams subjected to either static or dynamic flexural loading. Variables investigated included ACC surface preparation, PCC thickness, and synthetic fiber reinforcement usage. Field testing involved monitoring interface strains and temperatures, falling weight deflectometer deflection responses, direct shear strengths, and distresses on a 7.2 mile Iowa Department of Transportation UTW project (HR-559). Variables investigated included ACC surface preparation, PCC thickness, synthetic fiber reinforcement usage, and joint spacing. The results of both laboratory and field testing are presented and summarized in this paper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was initiated in 1991 as a part of a whitetopping project to study the effectiveness of various techniques to enhance bond strength between a new portland cement concrete (PCC) overlay and an existing asphalt cement concrete (ACC) pavement surface. A 1,676 m (5,500 ft) section of county road R16 in Dallas County, Iowa, was divided into 12 test sections. The various techniques used to enhance bond were power brooming, power brooming with air blast, milling, cement and water grout, and emulsion tack coat. As a part of these bonding techniques, two pavement thicknesses were placed; two different concrete proportions were used; and two sections were planed to a uniform cross-slope. Bond strength was perceived to be the key to determining an appropriate design procedure for whitetopping. If adequate bond is achieved, a bonded PCC overlay technique could be used for design. Without sufficient bond development, an unbonded overlay procedure should be used. The research found that bond was developed in every section, regardless of the bond enhancement technique used. The underlying ACC does contribute to the composite structure and can be considered in the design. The sections where the underlying ACC contributed the greatest amount of structure to the composite pavement were not the sections with the highest bond strength.

Book excerpt: Bonded concrete overlays have a structural advantage over unbonded concrete overlays when the overlay and the existing pavement layer behave as a monolithic layer. Therefore, it is important to ensure suitable bond strength between the two layers. Many studies have specified the bond-strength criteria for the construction of bonded concrete overlays based on a monotonic load as pull off test. However, cyclic stress at the interface of bonded concrete overlay layer occurs by the repetition of traffic loading and environmental loading caused by daily temperature changes. In this study, a strategic test procedure is developed to investigate potential bond failures caused by cyclic loading, and a bond-fatigue equation for a bonded concrete overlay was suggested. The test results indicate that early distress in bonded concrete overlay may arise because of a bond failure if the bond stress at the interface exceeds 90 % of the bond strength.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is devoted to the study of the debonding of thin bonded cement-based overlays from the concrete substrate under mechanical loading. As repair materials, fiber-reinforced and rubbberized cement-based mortars are used. Under these conditions, assessment of durability of the repairs necessarily involves the study of the degradation of the bridging strength under fatigue loading. In this context, tensile fatigue tests controlled by crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) are conducted on composite specimens in order to establish the degradation law of fiber-reinforced and/or rubberized mortar. The bridging strength decreases with the number of fatigue cycles for the same maximum crack width, whatever the nature of the composite. The maximum cyclic bridging strength degradation occurs in plain mortar. The cyclic bridging strength degradation for large pre-cracked widths is limited for mortar reinforced with metallic fibers. In case of rubberized mortar, cyclic bridging strength degradation is limited at less pre-cracked width values. A combine use of rubber aggregates and fibers in mortar appeared to be a suitable solution to limit the cyclic bridging strength degradation for a wide range of pre-cracked widths. It confers to the composite an interest for durable application such as cement-based thin bonded overlays. Taking into account the main cause of distress in thin bonded cement-based applications i.e. cracking and interface debonding, different surface preparation techniques were evaluated in this research. Among them, the sandblasting one is usually implemented in actual conditions. In order to investigate the structural performance, composite beams consisting of a thin repair layer on top of sandblasted substrates are subjected to three point bending tests (monotonic and fatigue). For monitoring the evolution of cracking in the repair layer and of debonding at interface, digital 3D image correlation technique is used. It emerges as a conclusion that the rubber aggregates incorporation in repair material is helpful to control micro-cracking, which results in the delay of the debonding initiation. Moreover, a fiber-reinforcement of repair material is also helpful to limit the interface debonding propagation by restraining opening of the crack. So, the dual-use of rubber aggregates and fibers in the repair material of thin bonded cement-based overlays can be a suitable solution to delay the debonding initiation and also to limit the interface debonding propagation. This shows that the synergetic effect provided by the combine use of rubber aggregates and fibers remains valid under fatigue loading also. The used rubber aggregates are obtained by grinding end-of-life tyres. In such conditions, the approach brings an added value, the recycling of this industrial by-product being also a contribution to the maintenance of a clean environment. Incidentally, this approach also helps towards the development of a circular economy.
