Book excerpt: Six commercial types of sun glass lenses were used in six laboratory tests to determine their effects on color perception, during and immediately after the wearing. Neutrals (types, Neutral and Polaroid) and greenish-gray lenses (types, Rayban and Calobar) produced little distortion of color perception as measured by any test. Brown lenses (type, Rose Smoke) caused considerable decrement in color discrimination and a yellow lens (type, Noviol) caused extreme decrement. None of the lenses increased color perception in any part of the color range. It is concluded that greenish-gray lenses of the Rayban and Calobar type do not seriously impair color perception when used for the observation of non-dichromatic materials. A study was made on the after effects of wearing the lenses; it appears that adaptation proceeds rapidly and is half-completed in about 5 seconds. There are appendices on the measurement of spectral transmittance of polarizing film and on methods of specification of neutrality for sunglasses. (Author).

Color perception can be modified with light filters, also called color-tinted lenses, that form spectral patterns. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the effects of color-tinted lenses on visual behavior by assessing visual, optophysiological, and emotional performance. Visual performance can be exemplarily determined psychophysically by contrast sensitivity tests. When focusing on near distances, optophysiological performance is reflected in the lag of accommodation, which can be modulated by progressive addition lenses. Emotional performance, as reflected in the arousal level under affective conditions, can be described by a late positive potential in the brain measured by electroencephalography. This thesis considers three approaches to investigate the effect of custom-designed and existing color-tinted lenses on different measurements of performance in human participants: contrast sensitivity, lag of accommodation, and visceral neurophysiology. First, to accurately evaluate the influence of color-tinted lenses on visual performance, a contrast sensitivity test was developed with higher precision, repeatability, and reliability than existing tests, called the Tuebingen Contrast Sensitivity Test. With this test, it was found that neither existing colortinted lenses nor high- and band-pass-filter color-tinted lenses significantly improved contrast sensitivity. Second, red-tinted lenses were able to reduce the lag of accommodation. Third, with red-tinted lenses, physiological measurements revealed a higher amplitude of the late positive potential and skin conductance after showing affective pictures, such as a smiling baby, an erotic couple, or a mutilated body. The color-tinted lenses investigated appear to affect opto-physiological and emotional performance, but not visual performance when compared to clear lenses. In future experiments, a potential common mechanism behind the two effects observed in optophysiological and emotional performance, namely, better lag of accommodation with red-tinted lenses and higher arousal level under emotional conditions, could be explored. In summary, this thesis shows that color-tinted lenses can change visual behavior.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Background: Prescription compliance is a complex issue, affected by physical, psychological, and emotional factors. Changes in color vision due to the normal aging process are an aspect of declining physical functioning that has not been addressed in relation to prescription compliance. Objective: To establish a relationship between medication selection and color vision loss in older adults. Methods: This study with healthy younger adults, age 18-26, used a pair of yellow-lens glasses and colored beads to simulate medication selection in older adults compared with a control group of similarly aged adults not wearing the lenses. Medication selection was quantified by correct bead selection and complexity of challenge was determined by a difficulty rating. Results: Participants with the yellow-lens glasses were only able to select the correct color of bead 74.4% of the time compared to 100% for the control group. The experimental group also expressed more difficulty with the task giving it a difficulty rating of 4.02 out of 5 compared to 1.04 out of 5 in the control group. Conclusions: This study concluded that older persons were more likely to have difficulty selecting their medications based on color which has implications for non-compliance. They are also more likely to experience frustration with their medication therapy due to color vision changes.
