Book excerpt: "The effect of climate change on moose (Alces alces) is of interest within the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) because of the potential role this species plays in the conservation of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) and possible losses of recreational and economic opportunities if moose populations decrease. Moose have numerous direct and indirect linkages to climate and represent a potentially useful indicator of how climate change is affecting wildlife populations in general. The objective of this vulnerability study was to utilize a plausible, parsimonious, systems-level model of moose population dynamics to explore the response of moose populations to climate projections in the northeast Clay Belt region of Ontario (Ecodistrict 3E-1). Scenario analysis was conducted using a variety of assumptions about future biotic and abiotic interactions under Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenarios A2 and B1 (for details see IPCC 2000)."--publisher.
