Experiments included: 1) preliminary study of basic fertilizer sources to select the ranges of treatments to study in germination, greenhouse, and field experiments; 2) germination experiments on all fertilizer sources to evaluate the effect of selected rates on germination, germination rate index, and seedling dry weight at 10 days after planting; 3) greenhouse experiments on all fertilizer sources to evaluate seedling emergence, emergence rate index, and seedling dry weight at 10 and 20 days after planting; and 4) measurement of seedling emergence, emergence rate index, and seedling dry weight at 10 and 20 days after first emergence, on Woodburn soil at two planting dates to obtain different field environmental conditions. Preliminary experiments showed three distinct concentration levels for each source: 1) lethal dose, where no signs of germination were present; were found at 4, 5, 5, and 15 % solution concentration for Solution 32, 10-34-0-.9, Thio-Sul, and Potash solution, respectively; 2) critical dose, where concentration levels showed a delay or detrimental effects on germination, was identified at 0.25, 0.08, 0.08, and 3 % solution concentration for the same materials; and 3) safe dose, where seeds produced normal seedlings. Simple regression analysis on preliminary experiments indicated that as the rate of liquid fertilizer source increased, total germination decreased in a linear manner. For each 10 L ha-1 of product applied, germination decreased in 1.52, 0.86, 0.89, and 0.40 % for Solution 32, 10-34-0-.9, Thio-Sul, and Potash solution, respectively. The technique developed in this study appears to be a quick and efficient method to screen for liquid fertilizer toxicity. The laboratory and greenhouse technique allows for more controlled conditions than in field studies. Under field conditions, a greater range of treatments would be required. Book excerpt: "Plant growth regulators (PGRs) shorten the straw of cereals and have been used commercially to control lodging in regions of high rainfall for many years. PGRs have been shown not only to reduce height, but affect yield formation processes such as dry matter accumulation, distribution and the principle yield components in the absence of lodging. The use of the anti-gibberellin PGRs such as Trinexapac Ethyl (Moddus) and Chlormequat Chloride (Cycocel) have only recently been considered as a means of increasing yield in dryland wheat production systems. However, results have been inconsistent and seem to vary with the type of PGR, rate, growth stage of application, environment and cultivar. The experiments reported here were designed to investigate the potential of PGRs to increase yields in dryland wheat production systems of the southern Australian wheat belt. Moddus and Cycocel (collectively to be referred to as PGRs) were applied in the field, at two locations, Wagga Wagga in the NSW Riverina using the variety EGA Gregory and Swan Hill in the Victorian Northern Mallee using the variety Yitpi. Crops were sprayed with varying rates and combinations of Moddus and/or Cycocel applied at three different crop growth stages, GS 13/15, GS 25/29 and GS 31/31. Measurements of crop height, canopy greenness, lodging, stem non-structured carbohydrates (NSC), dry matter production and yield and its principle components were taken to evaluate the effects of the PGRs."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Effect of temperature on seed dormancy, alpha-amylase activity and kernel weight in five wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties was studied. Three ripening temperature conditions - 15.5°C, 26.6 °C and "Field" were used to induce dormancy. Alpha-amylase activity and kernel weight of developing kernels was determined every ten days after anthesis until maturity. Dormancy in kernels was examined at germination temperatures of 15. 5°C, 20°C and 26. 6°C. Alpha- amylase activity during germination of kernels was determined on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th day. In developing kernels alpha-amylase activity peaked at 10 to 20 days after anthesis and dropped or levelled-off as the kernels approached maturity. This was observed at both 15.5°C and 26.6° C . However, the peak was not obvious at 26.6°C because of the enzyme activity was lower at this temperature than at 15.5°C. In kernels ripened in field, the enzyme activity fluctuated apparently depending upon the changes in weather conditions, especially temperature. A faster growth of kernels and higher final dry kernel weight were noticed at 26.6°C and field temperature conditions than at 15.5°C. Significant varietal differences were observed in both alpha-amylase activity in kernels and kernel weight during the development and maturation of kernels. Kernels of all varieties, ripened at 26.6 °C, germinated as fast as non-dormant check kernels at 15.5°C but exhibited varying degrees of dormancy when germinated at 20 °C and 26.6°C. In contrast, kernels of Brevor, Tom Thumb and P.I. 178211, ripened at 15.5 °C showed a high level of dormancy as shown by their failure to germinate at 20 °C and 26.6 °C, and slow germination at 15.5° C. Kernels of Hyslop and Yamhill, ripened at 15.5°C, did not show dormancy at 15.5°C but showed some dormancy at 20°C and 26.6°C. This dormancy, however, was less than in Brevor, Tom Thumb and P.I. 178211. Field ripened kernels of Yamhill and Hyslpp when germinated at 15.5°C, did not show any dormancy; whereas, P.I. 178211, Brevor and Tom Thumb expressed different degrees of dormancy. Kernels of all varieties, ripened in the field, when germinated at 20°C or 26.6 °C, showed different degrees of dormancy except Yamhill. Yamhill did not differ significantly from the one year old non-dormant check kernels at 26.6° C . A substantial increse in alpha-amylase occurred only in germinated kernels. Although kernels of all varieties ripened at 26.6°C showed about the same weighted germination percentage at 15.5°C, germinated kernels of Yamhill, Hyslop and P.I. 178211 and had highly significant greater alpha-amylase activity than those of Brevor and Tom Thumb. In general, lower alpha-amylase activity was observed at higher germination temperatures. However, the data indicate that the enzyme activity depends to some extent on the ripening temperature conditions. Thus the results indicated that seed dormancy, alpha-amylase activity and kernel weight are determined by the genotype of a variety and influenced by the temperature during maturation and germination of kernels.
