This study examined the relationship between college student alcohol use, alcohol-related problems and drinking games participation (DG), notably the meditational role of positive alcohol expectancies between participation, use, and problems. Participants included 1329 entering freshmen at a Bay Area university who self-identified as 18 years of ago or older, reported a recent experience of drinking alcohol, and who completed the survey during orientation before their first academic quarter. Participants were asked to complete brief questionnaires regarding demographics, alcohol use during the previous three months, alcohol-related consequences, frequency of DG participation, favorite DG, and the Alcohol Expectancy Inventory (AEI). Simple regressions were used to examine the relationships between overall alcohol use, as measured by the Quantity Frequency Index (QFI), the number of different alcohol-related problems, and frequency of DG participation. A Chi-squared analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between type of game, as outlined by LaBrie (2013) and frequency of participation. An analysis of variance was conducted to examine the relationship between the frequency of DG participation and number of alcohol-related problems endorsed by students. To assess the effect of positive alcohol expectancies on the relationship between QFI and DG participation, a meditational path analysis was implemented using procedures outlined by Baron and Kenny (1986). Results indicate that increased frequency of alcohol involvement is associated with an increase in the number of alcohol-related problems. Similarly, greater frequency of DG participation was associated with a greater number of problems endorsed by students, as well as greater alcohol involvement overall. Type of DG was not associated with participation or problems in this study. Additionally, positive alcohol expectancies did not appear to mediate the relationship between DG participation and alcohol involvement, in support of resent research, which indicates that motives, rather than expectancies, may be a stronger mediator of college student drinking practices and negative alcohol-related consequences. Furthermore, this study supports literature demonstrating an association between DG participation and alcohol involvement. College drinking prevention and intervention programs may benefit from targeting DG involvement specifically.

The severity of the situation and lack of effective alcohol programming on college campuses warranted the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to commission a Task Force on College Drinking in 2002, which has been vital in revealing drinking patterns and negative consequences which are specific to the college environment. The Task Force proposed three strategies that were empirically validated for prevention and intervention in the college setting. Of the three recommendations, implementing cognitive behavioral skills training and offering motivational enhancement interventions, while proven effective are costly and time consuming to implement. The final strategy recommended, challenging alcohol expectancies, has been validated for use in a group setting making it a more viable option for reaching larger audiences. Within the college environment there are certain factors that have shown to be important in influencing college students' drinking behaviors, attitudes toward drinking, and alcohol related negative consequences. Specifically, membership in a fraternity or sorority has revealed a unique predictor of risky drinking behavior and an increased risk of suffering from negative consequences related to alcohol. The purpose of the present study was to implement an expectancy-based presentation in Greek chapter houses to alter expectancies and decrease risky drinking behavior. Alcohol expectancies were measured before and immediately after the presentation. Alcohol consumption was also assessed in a self-report measure of drinking for the 30 days prior to the presentation as well as 30 days following it. Analyses revealed significant reductions in positive alcohol expectancies and alcohol consumption on measures of quantity (average drinks per sitting), frequency (average drinking days per week), and heavy episodic drinking (average weekly peak blood alcohol content). Therefore, the structure and effectiveness of the current intervention program proves extremely useful and practical for widespread implementation in Greek chapter houses across all college campuses.

Book excerpt: The prevalence of hazardous drinking is not decreasing but remaining relatively high and stable on college campuses (Johnston, O'Malley, & Bachman, 1997). Past research has found that use and abuse of alcohol has profound negative consequences among college students, especially those who drink hazardously (Wechsler, Lee, Gledhill-Hoyt, & Nelson, 2001). In addition, there are a number of psychological, social, and environmental factors that influence or contribute to alcohol use among college students (Quigley & Marlatt, 1996). More specifically, alcohol expectations have been found to mediate the association between drinking triggers and decisions to drink alcohol (Annis & Davis, 1989). Positive expectancies have been found to be more predictive of alcohol use than negative expectancies (Stacy,Wildaman, & Marlatt, 1990). This study explored patterns of reported alcohol use and expectations about alcohol among 155 undergraduate freshmen students at a private Midwest liberal arts college. Participants were recruited for this study through twenty freshmen studies classes during the fall semester of 2001. Participants completed the Alcohol Use Identification Disorders Test (AUDIT), Alcohol Expectancies Questionnaire (AEQ and the Alcohol Effects Questionnaire-Self version (AEQ-S, which is identical to the AEFQ). Fifty-two point three percent of this sample of freshmen students were hazardous drinkers. The discovery that the majority of the sample entered college with pre-established patterns of hazardous alcohol use that put them at risk was surprising and raised several concerns. Independent t-tests revealed that hazardous drinkers had a pattern of alcohol expectations that differentiated them from non-hazardous drinkers. Hazardous drinkers held significantly more positive expectations about alcohol use for others (i.e., alcohol makes Suzie more fun) and themselves (i.e., alcohol makes me have more fun) compared to non-hazardous drinkers. This means that 52.3% of the freshmen sample were highly motivated to continue their hazardous drinking behavior. Thus, this study offered tremendous support for the implementation of prevention and intervention programs regarding alcohol use on college campuses. Recommendations for prevention and interventions programs are suggested in order to decrease hazardous alcohol use on college campuses.

Although peers are known to influence alcohol consumption, the potential influence of personality characteristics are less well known. This study examined the role of regulatory focus and alcohol expectancies on the association between peers' consequences for alcohol use and participants' alcohol consumption. Exposure to peers' experience of consequences for alcohol use was expected to have an increased association with participants' expectancies and consumption when it was congruent with participants' regulatory focus. Prevention focus was expected to result in an increased negative response to negative consequences for peer alcohol use and promotion focus was expected to result in an increased positive response to positive consequences for peer alcohol use. The current study examined the potential effect of this person-situation congruence by having participants fill out a series of questionnaires online using SurveyMonkey. These questionnaires included measures of positive and negative consequences for peer alcohol use, positive and negative alcohol expectancies, regulatory focus, participants' own alcohol consumption, and perception of friends' alcohol use. Neither positive nor negative alcohol expectancies were found to mediate the association between consequences for peers' alcohol use and one's own drinking. Promotion focus was also not found to moderate the association of peers' positive consequences for alcohol use and one's own use or the association between peers' positive consequences for alcohol use and positive alcohol expectancies. On its own, prevention focus did moderate the association between negative consequences for peers' alcohol use and one's own drinking, such that it enhanced the inverse association between negative consequences and alcohol consumption. Prevention focus also moderated the association between negative consequences for peers' alcohol use and negative alcohol expectancies in an unexpected way, with participants with a higher level of prevention focus being less influenced by peers' consequences. These results suggest that there may be additional confounding variables that are not included in these models. Future studies should consider alternative methods of data collection and research designs, including experimental or quasi-experimental designs.

While research with volunteer participants generally supports the use of cognitive behavioral and motivational interventions in reducing drinking quantities and consequences, research with mandated students (students referred for an intervention following violation of a campus alcohol policy) continues to produce mixed results. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of three interventions: Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) groups, Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) feedback sessions, and Alcohol Diversion Program (ADP) treatment-as-usual education groups in a sample (N = 61) of mandated students. Pre-intervention behavior change and intervention techniques were also evaluated. Attitudes toward campus policies, readiness to change, intervention satisfaction, and reactions to the sanctioning incident were examined as moderators of intervention efficacy. Finally, defensiveness, norms perceptions, protective behavioral strategies, and alcohol expectancies were examined as mediators of behavioral change. Results revealed a significant pre-intervention decrease in monthly drinks and drinking days. There was a significant effect of time for reductions in blood alcohol content (BAC) and weekly drinks but not consequences. While ASTP and BASICS participants reported decreases in BAC, ADP participants experienced increases over time. Reductions in consequences were related to ASTP participation and lower policy support at baseline. Low external responsibility for the incident predicted greater reductions in BAC, and greater incident aversiveness predicted lower BAC and weekly drinks. Increases in pre-intervention defensiveness were more pronounced among ADP participants as well as male, older, and Greek students. Finally, decreases in overall defensiveness were associated with ASTP participants and more in-session complex reflections. Results from this study suggest a complex relationship between mandated student characteristics and interventions, highlighting potential iatrogenic effects from education-only mandated group interventions, the importance of incident reactions on behavior change, and factors associated with pre- and post-intervention defensiveness.
