Book excerpt: The objective of the work presented in this dissertation was to determine the effects of birth weight and weaning weight on pig growth performance, fat and lean tissue accretion rates, and carcass characteristics and composition. Study 1 was a retrospective analysis of data collected in two studies conducted under commercial conditions. Individual pig body weights were collected at birth, weaning, and 8 and 20 weeks post-weaning, and carcass data was also collected on individual pigs. The pigs were sorted by birth weight, and assigned to quartiles on the basis of birth body weight. The data were then analyzed as a completely randomized design with four treatments (birth weight quartiles). Study 2 evaluated the growth performance, fat and lean tissue accretion rates, carcass characteristics and composition, and meat quality of barrows with Heavy, Medium, or Light birth weights housed in individual pens from 3 weeks post-weaning to an end body weight of 145 kg. This study was conducted as a randomized complete block design with three treatments (Heavy, Medium, and Light birth weight) and the blocking factor was day of weaning. Study 3 was conducted as a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments [Birth weight (Heavy vs Light) and Weaning weight (Heavy vs Light), and evaluated the same parameters as Study 2. Heavy weaning weight pigs were reared in litters of 6 pigs during lactation and Light weaning weight pigs were reared in litters of 12 during lactation. The results of these studies indicate that light birth weight pigs grow slower during the wean-to-market period compared to heavy birth weight pigs. The results of Studies 1 and 2 also indicated there is a threshold level of birth weight above which there is no improvement in overall average daily gain. This was evidenced by a much larger difference in growth rate between quartiles 1 and 2 than between the other quartiles in Study 1, and a lack of a difference in growth rate between medium and heavy birth weight pigs in Study 2. There was no difference observed in feed intake among the birth weight classifications in either Study 2 or Study 3 and the light birth weight pigs had less percentage lean of the carcass compared to the heavier birth weight pigs in both studies. Additionally, weaning weight had no effect on growth performance or carcass characteristics. The results of these studies indicate that light birth weight pigs grow slower than heavy birth weight pigs and the reduction in growth rate is due to less potential for lean tissue accretion.

Pigs from the 3 birth weight classifications were selected from within the same birth litter. Part II was carried out from 110 ± 2.0 to 134 ± 3.2 kg BW as a RCBD using a 3 ©7 2 factorial arrangement of treatments: 1) Birth weight (Heavy, Medium, Light), and 2) dietary Paylean inclusion level (0 and 5 ppm). Pigs were housed in individual pens and were weighed at birth, weaning, and every two weeks thereafter in Part I and weekly during Part II. All feed additions and feed left in the feeder at the time of pig weighing were recorded and used in the calculation of average daily feed intake and gain:feed ratio. At 134 kg BW, pigs were shipped to the University of Illinois Meat Science Laboratory and harvested according to standard procedures. Standard carcass and meat quality measurements (subjective color, firmness, and marbling, Minolta color, and drip loss) were taken ~24 hr post-mortem, and Warner-Bratzler shear force was measured on cooked Longissimus muscle chops. The right side of each carcass was separated into skin, bone, and soft tissue, each tissue was weighed, and the soft tissue was ground. In Part I, light birth weight pigs had lower (P 0.05) ADG (0.98 vs. 1.02 vs. 1.05, respectively; SEM 0.016 kg), but similar (P 0.05) ADFI and G:F as medium and heavy birth weight pigs. In Part II, there were no treatment interactions for growth traits; the effects of birth weight on growth performance were similar to Part I. Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were two-fold; first, to estimate to impact of birth weight in a commercial production system on economically important traits; second, to estimate the heritability of individual birth weight and its genetic relationship with economically important traits. To accomplish the first goal two trials were conducted. Both trials involved collecting individual piglet birth weights within 24 hours of birth on a commercial sow farm. All pigs were farrowed from Large White x Landrace sows bred to Duroc boars. In trial one, 5,727 pigs were initially weighed. Individual mortality was tracked and BW weights were collected at weaning and placement in the finisher. Approximately half of the remaining live pigs at finishing placement were followed through finishing and individual BW were collected 16 weeks into finishing. During BW collections, pigs were given a quality score based on BW and health (3 = acceptable weight and no visible injuries/health issues; 2 = somewhat light weight and/or minor injuries/health issues; 1 = severely light weight and/or minor injuries/health). Nonlinear associations for birth weight with BW (weaning, finishing placement, and 16 weeks into finishing), mortality (pre-weaning and nursery), quality score (weaning, finishing placement, and 16 weeks into finishing) were estimated. In each instance as birth weight decreased an unfavorable effect occurred in all traits; impact was especially great for the lightest birth weight pigs. Similarly as birth weight decreased the likelihood of a pig being full value near the end of finishing (combination of the previous traits) decreased. In the second study 440 pigs were transferred to the Swine Evaluation Station (Clayton, NC) to focus on the impact of birth weight on feed efficiency. Pigs were penned by birth weight, and BW and feed intake were tracked through the conclusion of finishing. Light birth weight pigs were more efficient; however, the advantage in efficiency was apparen.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of a short term lysine restriction at weaning on pig growth performance and body composition, and the extent of compensatory growth when pigs are then fed adequate amounts of dietary lysine. Pigs were followed until final market weight of 124kg was attained to assess effects of compensatory growth on carcass and meat quality. Short term lysine restriction at weaning reduced growth performance (gains, feed efficiency) and body protein mass while increasing body lipid mass. However, when fed a diet that was no longer limiting in lysine, pigs were capable of achieving compensatory growth with no effects on carcass or meat quality. Short term nutrient restriction may be an effective approach to reduce diet costs without jeopardizing performance and carcass and meat quality.

Book excerpt: Data from 592 litters of pigs farrowed and raised at the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station at Corvallis from the spring of 1961 through the spring of 1968 were analyzed for effects of year and season of birth, breed, sex, inbreeding and age of dam on measures of fecundity, growth rate and carcass merit. Hierarchal analysis of variance was done to find the effects of population structure and inbreeding on the components of phenotypic variance and heritability for measures of litter size and average daily gain. The Oregon State University swine herd is composed of a partly closed line of Berkshires, a partly closed herd of Yorkshires, reciprocal crosses between these two breeds and a line developed from inter-se mating of F1 and later generations. Significant differences among the various breed groups were found for number of pigs born alive, number born alive plus dead, number born plus mummified fetuses, number weaned per litter, average daily gain, carcass length, average backfat thickness, loin eye area and ham weight. Differences among breeds were not significant for loin weight. The level of performance did not increase, over the period studied, for any of the traits studied except loin eye area. The lack of increase in level of performance may be due to a lack of sufficient selection pressure, detrimental environmental effects or the depression in performance due to inbreeding. Fall-farrowed pigs had lower average daily gains than spring-farrowed pigs but, in general, had more desirable carcasses. The differences in performance and carcass traits are attributed to the smaller proportion of males performance tested from fall-farrowed litters. Males gained 0.096 pounds per day faster than females but carcasses were 0.264 inches shorter, had 0.067 inches more average backfat, had ham and loin weights that were 0.798 and 0.516 pounds less respectively and had loin eye areas that were 0.382 square inches smaller. Negative regressions for the effects of inbreeding of the dam on litter size at birth and weaning and positive regressions for the effect of inbreeding on litter size at birth were found but most effects were not statistically significant. The number of mummified fetuses and stillbirths was not affected by inbreeding but mortality between birth and weaning increased significantly when inbreeding of the dam rose above a threshold of ten percent. Both linear and quadratic components of age of dam had highly significant effects on the litter size at birth and on the number of pigs weaned with a peak in sow productivity occurring at about three years of age. Age of dam effects were thought to be due almost entirely to differences in ovulation rate or early embryo survival as the number of mummified fetuses, stillbirths or pre-weaning deaths were not related to age of dam. Environmental variation of litter size and average daily gain increased with increasing levels of inbreeding, indicating that inbred individuals were unable to buffer themselves against fluctuations in environment. Heritability of average daily gain decreased with inbreeding because of lower genetic variance and higher environmental variance. Heritability estimates of litter size were quite variable due to the limited number of sire groups available but, in general, were quite low and generally not significantly different from zero. Estimates of heritability of average daily gain were more than twice as high as most estimates reported in the literature. These high estimates were thought to be biased due to the cumulative effects of a number of characteristics of the population and of the data. A line developed from a Berkshire-Yorkshire crossbred foundation should have more alleles segregating and therefore should have a higher additive genetic variance than the parental breeds. However, no differences between breed groups were observed in the magnitude of genetic variance, environmental variance or heritability estimates.
