Book excerpt: Focusing attention on an external cue (EF), as opposed to an internal focus of attention (IF), has been shown to improve reaction time (RT) for track and field athletes during a sprint start (Kovacs et al., 2018). The track sprint start is a rapid, discrete, whole body movement whereby athletes need to rely on a motor program that has all parameters specified before movement initiation. The purpose of this study was to address the question of whether improvements in a sprint start under an EF condition are dependent on the participants’ skill level. Twelve collegiate track sprinters (age 20.8 ±1.7), and twelve collegiate non-sprint athletes (age 20.1±1.2) completed three testing sessions under EF, IF, and no focus instruction (NF) conditions. RT was recorded from the rear starting block. Muscle activation time (EMG) was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscles, and was used to determine pre-motor RT and motor RT. Mean RT was significantly shorter (p0.001) for sprinters (227.7 ms) compared with non-sprinters (273.8 ms). Mean RT for sprinters was significantly shorter (p 0.0001) under the EF (212.11 ms) compared with the IF (234.21 ms) and NF conditions (236.87 ms). Similarly, mean premotor RT under the EF condition (157.75 ms) was significantly shorter (p 0.001) compared with the IF (181.90 ms) and NF (173.60 ms) conditions. No differences in RT and pre-motor RT across conditions were found for non-sprint athletes (p0.05). Motor RT did not differ across the various focus of attention conditions (p0.05) or across experimental groups (p0.05). These results suggest that the beneficial effects of EF on dynamic whole-body movements are manifested at higher skill levels, and that adopting different types of attentional focus interferes with the efficiency of the movement planning processes. Improvement in RT likely originates at the level of central processes during movement preparation (pre-motor RT), and not at the level of peripheral processes associated with excitation-contraction coupling of the muscle fibers (motor RT).

Book excerpt: "Two bodies of literature have addressed the question of how attentional focus relates to learning and performance of a motor task. The literature on direction of attention has found that focusing on the effects of one's movement, an external focus, rather than on one's bodily movements, an internal focus, leads to more effective and efficient movements and subsequently better performance on a variety of sport-related motor skills. The literature on the relevance of attention has determined that novices perform well when focused on aspects of the skill execution itself, but experience performance decrements when asked to focus on something extraneous. Experts show the opposite tendency in that they perform more poorly when focused on the skill execution than on a distractor. Both of these areas of research are well-established in their own right, but they are not purely independent because these different styles of focus overlap. A novice golfer who focuses on the swing of his arms while putting is predicted to do more poorly due to an internal focus, but the other body of literature predicts success due to a skill-relevant focus. Few have attempted to research the effects of both dimensions of focus simultaneously. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify whether the interaction of external and skill-focused attention could be more beneficial to skill acquisition and retention than either one separately. Participants learned to throw darts while receiving one type of attentional focus instruction: (1) internal, skill-relevant; (2) external, skill-relevant; (3) internal, extraneous; (4) external, extraneous. They returned 48 hours later to perform retention trials without any attentional instructions. Workload was assessed via a self-report survey for participants in each condition to assess whether any differences in subjective difficulty exist between the groups. Although all participants improved their throwing accuracy throughout the acquisition period, there were no performance differences seen between the conditions at acquisition or retention. There were also no differences in perceived workload between the conditions. These results are expected if workload does, in fact, mediate the effect of focus of attention on motor skill performance. With workload demands similar, there exist no differences in performance between groups following different focus instructions. Further, the only reliable predictor of performance on the task was the participant's self-rating of expertise reported prior to participation. Future between-subjects research designs in motor learning should aim to balance participants across groups using self-ratings of skill level. Finally, the NASA-TLX should be used to measure workload in the typical methodology used in direction of attention literature and skill-relevance of focus literature, where performance differences have been observed, in order to determine whether differences in workload demands could be partially responsible for those performance differences."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

The instruction provided can cause the athlete or client to focus their attention internally or externally. Internal is a focus on body parts or body movements whereas external is a focus on an external object or end result of the movement. Limited evidence exists regarding attentional focus effects on muscular strength. A majority of the studies have tested isolated joint movements at submaxmimal loads. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to address the gaps in research by investigating the influence of attentional focus on muscular strength and surface electromyographic amplitude during a free-weight bench press exercise. Twenty three resistance-trained males, following a familiarization session, performed a one-repetition max bench press and completed 3 repititions at loads of 65%RM, 75%RM, and 85%RM under internal (INT), external (EXT), and control (CONT) conditions on 3 separate occasions. The order of attentional focus was randomized and counterbalanced. One-repitition max scores and electromyographical data from five muscles of the eupper body were recorded for analysis. Subsequently, the mean and peak EMG amplitudes were computed. A repeated-measures ANOVA comparing IRM relative strength scores found no statistical differences between conditions F(2,44)=.197, p=.822, np2=.009. There were also no statistically signficant differences in the peak EMG values under three attentional focus instructions for any muscle under any load according to the repeated-measures ANCOVA, with sphericity assumed. In conclusion, the performance of a resistance-trained individual does not appear to be affected by attentional focus instructions when performing a bench press at max and near max loads.
