Book excerpt: Effects of embedded longitudinal vortices on heat transfer in a turbulent boundary layer film cooled from a single injections hole are discussed. Film coolant was injected at blowing ratios 0.50 to 1.50 at a freestream velocity of 10 m/s. A single longitudinal vortex was induced upstream of the film-cooling holes. Heat transfer measurement were made downstream of injection. Flow visualization tests were conducted after the injectant was contaminated with smoke. Surveys of mean velocity and mean temperature were also made in different spanwise normal planes. For all blowing ratios examined, the embedded vortices cause significant alterations to wall heat transfer and to film-cooling distributions. Embedded vortex, Film-cooling single jet, Heat transfer, Endwall secondary flows. (jes).

Book excerpt: This thesis was designed to model some of the secondary flow effects on endwalls, blades, and combustion chambers of gas turbine engines. Measurements were made in a turbulent boundary layer developing over a flat plate, using a single row of injection holes spaced three diameters apart inclined at 30 degrees with respect to horizontal. The injection system was designed to provide uniform injection temperatures for various blowing rates with discharge coefficients ranging from 0.58 to 0.73. The heat transfer surface was designed to provide constant heat flux with adjustable temperature range. Experimental heat transfer results were obtained with a turbulent boundary layer only, with boundary layer and injection of film cooling, with boundary layer and embedded vortex, and finally with boundary layer, film cooling, and embedded vortex. The effects of the vortex on heat transfer in the film cooled boundary layer are significant and important: (1) On the downwash side of the vortex, heat transfer is augmented, effects of the film cooling are negated and local hot spots will exist in engines. (2) Near the upwash side of the vortex coolant is pushed to the side of the vortex, appearing to augment the protection provided by film cooling.

Book excerpt: Interactions of wall jets and vortices embedded in turbulent boundary layers commonly occur near gas turbine blades and endwalls where film cooling is employed. These interactions frequently result in undesirable heat transfer effects at blade and endwall surfaces. In this research, a crossed hot-wire probe is used to measure the turbulence structure resulting from this type of interaction. The vortex is generated using a half-delta-wing vortex generator mounted at 12 degrees with respect to a 10 m/s mean velocity flow over a flat plate. A single injection hole, .95 cm in diameter, inclined 30 degrees to the horizontal, is located under the vortex downwash, 58 cm downstream from the vortex generator. Baseline measurements were made at one streamwise location downstream of the injection hole for the cases: (1) boundary layer only; (2) boundary layer with vortex, and (3) boundary layer with wall jet. Measurement of the interaction between the boundary layer, vortex and 2.5 blowing ratio wall jet was also made at this location. The 1.5 blowing ratio wall jet interaction was measured at three additional streamwise locations. Reynolds stress tensor components, vorticity distributions and mean velocities show that the vortex significantly alters the turbulence structure of the 1.5 blowing ratio wall jet at all four streamwise locations. Here the injectant is swept away from the injection hole by the vortex rotation. The most significant alterations to the turbulence structure occur in the vortex upwash region and beneath the vortex core. The 2.5 blowing ratio jet is much more resistant to disturbance by the vortex. (kr).

Measurement of interaction between the boundary layer, vortex upwash, and the wall jet was made at one station with various blowing ratios. At low blowing ratios (m = 0.5 and 1.5) the vortex dominates the flow. Significant alterations to the turbulent structure are seen in the Reynolds stress components, vorticity distributions and mean velocities. At higher blowing ratios (m = 2.5 and 3.5) the jet dominates the flow, the vortex is blown away from the wall, and its turbulence effects are dispersed over a larger area. Theses. (edc).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today understanding turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling flow problems in engineering. Powerful computers and numerical methods are now available for solving flow equations, but the simulation of turbulence effects, which are nearly always important in practice, are still at an early stage of development. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulence momentum, heat and mass transfer. The 89 papers, including 5 invited papers, in this volume present and discuss new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. The high standard of the contributions on the developing and testing of turbulent models attests to the world-wide interest this domain is currently attracting from researchers.
