Stress is one of the major challenges for health profession current students and fresh graduates. It has been associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression. Initial research has shown that mindfulness-based interventions have promising benefits in managing stress. This study aims to examine whether a brief online mindfulness program can increase mindfulness and decrease perceived stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms among health profession students and fresh graduates in Lebanon. Design. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was used to compare an online 10-day mindfulness-based intervention with a wait-list control condition in a population of students and fresh graduates from different health professions, including psychology, medicine, nutrition, social work, nursing, pharmacy and physical therapy. Methodology. Seventy-three students and fresh graduates were randomly allocated to either a 10-day self-guided mindfulness program delivered by Headspace App or a wait-list control group. Mindfulness, stress and anxiety/depression variables were measured using self-reported scales administered pre- and post-intervention. Engagement and feedback data were also collected from participants of the intervention group. Results. The Headspace 10-day program was effective in significantly increasing mindfulness and significantly decreasing perceived stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms comparable to those reported in well-established mindfulness-based interventions. Implications. Given the significant effectiveness of Headspace brief online mindfulness program in improving mindfulness and decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms, this RCT highlights the need to consider integrating such interventions into the educational curricula of health-related courses and internship programs in working places. Although the engagement level was relatively low, promising benefits on mindfulness, stress, anxiety and depression were demonstrated. Further research is required to examine how to optimize the effectiveness of brief online mindfulness programs.
