The students who went to preschool, students who did not go to preschool, and students who were home schooled make up the three target groups. The target groups were evaluated using the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS). Using the PALS test the preschool group and the home schooled group scored 11 points better than the no preschool group. As a result the research shows that students who have an academic pre-kindergarten school experience are better prepared for the beginning reading in a kindergarten curriculum.

In a quest to help children achieve at high levels, Pre Kindergarten is often cited as a proactive strategy to address the academic gaps many children have upon entering school. While the goal of Pre Kindergarten is to prepare children for later schooling, it is important to determine if this costly strategy has sustainable, long-term academic benefits. The purpose of this research was to determine if a Title I, Part A Pre Kindergarten program had an impact on the later academic achievement of children in a rural, high poverty, high minority, public school district in Mississippi. The results from this study can provide educators and policymakers with data as they work to align resources to provide an effective education program. It can provide educators with information to review and revise practices and procedures for positive early childhood education experiences. The quantitative, causal-comparative study examined the 3rd-grade academic achievement of children to determine if a significant difference existed between the students who received Pre Kindergarten services and those who did not. Student scale scores on the Mississippi Department of Education 3rd Grade Reading Summative Assessment and student attendance data were used to explore students later academic achievement. The overall collective data results from the study suggest Pre Kindergarten participation does not significantly improve the reading scores of children at the end of 3rd-grade. Although variances in the data were shown, it may be a result of the small sample sizes. The children who attended Pre Kindergarten did miss significantly fewer days of school. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study examined the influence of attending Head Start or Title I prekindergarten on student academic progress in reading and math as well as acquisition of appropriate work habits and conduct. The study tracked the rate of academic progress on two separate groups of Head Start attendees and two separate groups of Title I prekindergarten students as they progressed from kindergarten through grade three. In kindergarten through second grade, report card scores in reading, math, work habits, and conduct of students receiving an academic pre-kindergarten experience were compared to those of students with no academic pre-kindergarten experience. All children studied were from families with similar socioeconomic status. In third grade, the pre-test and post-test scores on the North Carolina End-of-Grade Test administered in reading and math in grade three were compared. A Hierarchical Linear Model measured the initial status and growth rate within and between students and a repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyze the End-of-Grade Test data. The students having a Head Start or Title I prekindergarten experience demonstrated significant, modest gains over no pre-kindergarten experience children in acquisition of reading and math skills in kindergarten and first grade. There were no significant differences in reading and math performance among all four groups in second and third grades. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the child's acquisition of work habits or appropriate conduct skills at any grade level.

The Congressionally-mandated Head Start Impact Study was conducted across 84 nationally representative grantee/delegate agencies. Approximately 5,000 newly entering 3- and 4-year-old children applying for Head Start were randomly assigned to either a Head Start group that had access to Head Start program services or to a non- Head Start group that could enrol in available community non-Head Start services, selected by their parents. Data collection began in fall 2002 and is scheduled to continue through 2006, following children through the spring of their 1st-grade year. The study quantifies the impact of Head Start separately for 3- and 4-year-old children across child cognitive, social-emotional, and health domains as well as ii on parenting practices. The comparative outcome of students who had attended a program before kindergarten versus students who did not attend a preschool program was measured. Students who had attended preschool achieved higher scores on the Metropolitan Readiness Test than children who had not. It was concluded that a preschool readiness program yields more proficiency in skills such as language and reading. In addition, professional staff members (teachers, school psychologists, principals, and reading specialists) were surveyed to determine their view of skills necessary to constitute kindergarten readiness. Some also participated in a follow-up interview to gain further clarity of their opinions. Results indicated that responses provided by the professionals corresponded to areas measured in the Metropolitan Readiness Test. Children who attended a pre-kindergarten program reflected higher scores, an indication that they were better prepared for kindergarten. Professionals' experienced view of readiness conformed that that result.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact on the academic performance of Hispanic pre-kindergarten students after participating in a three year structured literacy program compared to the academic performance of Hispanic prekindergarten students not in a structured literacy program in selected elementary schools in the Laredo Independent School District in Texas. This study's objective was to determine if participation in a structured literacy program is beneficial. This study will provide information and direction for district educators and school leaders contemplating the benefits of a three year old pre-kindergarten program at all district campuses. The researcher's hypothesis that young Hispanic children, given the opportunity to attend a three year old structured literacy program, will acquire literacy skills and perform academically above what is normally is expected for this age group, is supported by literature and studies reviewed. Key to the purpose of this study is the understanding that as children grow and develop in today's competitive society, literacy is important because it provides a foundation for life-long learning. For that reason it becomes necessary to educate all children at an early age. Given that in today's volatile educational system, a comprehensive early childhood program has not been adopted much less one that focuses on pre-literacy and literacy skills; it is vital to examine the possible benefits. Currently, school districts and private institutions allow children to enter a kindergarten at different levels of literacy development and reading readiness; this is even truer for today's divergent and burgeoning Hispanic population. Based on research, students tend to fare better, both short-term and long-term when allowed to enter an early educational setting. While no specific program is identified as key to this success, it only stands to reason that one that is structured and that has a well defined curriculum would fare better. Conclusions from this study provide data reflecting a need to provide an early pre-literacy program, improvement of teacher training, and greater parental involvement. It is this researcher's contention that schools benefit from further research regarding the implementation of like programs in other geographic regions and with other participants.

For this particular study, only two components of the DIBELS test were administered and analyzed: Phonemic Segmentation Fluency (PSF) and Nonsense Word Fluency (PSF). DIBELS data was collected from a rural school district in southeastern Alabama, from 2 groups, Pre-K and Non Pre-K. Based on the results of this study, students show some benefit from school-based Pre-K programs in comparison to those students who do not attend and participate in school-based Pre-K programs.

The preschool years provide an opportune time when reading difficulties are more easily altered through exposure to early literacy skills. This paper extends the authors' previous research by examining the kindergarten performance of a cohort of children from a multi-year research study in which preschoolers-at-risk for early literacy failure received targeted supplemental instruction. The goal of the present study is to examine the maintenance of the positive effects found for children from a cohort of the study. Of particular interest is whether children who completed the prekindergarten early literacy intervention go on to complete kindergarten with developmentally appropriate levels of reading readiness and whether children's response to the intervention is predictive of their kindergarten reading achievement. Results report children who received prekindergarten Tier 2 early literacy intervention were performing in the developmentally appropriate range in kindergarten. A systematic increase in performance over time was evident for each measure. The findings also indicate that children who received prekindergarten early literacy intervention were performing in the developmentally appropriate range in kindergarten with scores indicative of low-risk for future reading delays. In addition, examination of children's third grade reading achievement indicates comparable performance to both district and state norms.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to continue the efforts of other researchers in determining whether enrollment in a Pre-K classroom had any impact on students’ literacy and math achievement scores in kindergarten. The researcher conducted a two-way repeated measure ANOVA model for the study. The study sample included 6 teachers and 76 students. After reviewing the findings from the study, there was substantial evidence to support the researcher’s position that Pre-Kindergarten academic achievement and socialization significantly impact the transition into, and during the Kindergarten. The Literature Review substantiated the researcher’s position that Pre-K enrollment is a significant predictor of the student’s overall Kindergarten experience. Moreover, it revealed teachers’ perceptions of readiness, favoring Pre-K enrollment.
